Monster: My True Story | Aileen Wuornos, Christopher Berry-Dee
3 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Told in her own words, this is the story of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who was portrayed in an Oscar-winning performance by Charlize Theron in the filmMonster. There have been few female serial killers, but Aileen Wuornos, who was executed in 2002, was a remarkable example of this rare breed of death row inmate. All too often, female prostitutes have been the victims of male serial killersWuornos killings were the inverse of this pattern. After escaping an abusive childhood at the hands of her grandparents, she became a child prostitute, progressing into a disastrous adulthood of prostitution and damaging affairs with both men and women. Her eventual metamorphosis from victim to attacker had brutal consequencesa stream of dead men. This is her story, as told to Christopher Berry-Dee, editor ofThe New Criminologistand director of Britain's Criminology Research Center.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ One of the worst, and honestly creepiest, covers I‘ve ever seen. Been reading about this broad topic a lot lately, and never knew Aileen‘s story beyond the sex worker piece, so it was time. Her tumultuous upbringing was truly horrific, giving her zero chance at a stable adulthood. Still not an excuse for murdering 7 men. I could buy self defense once, maybe twice, but every time? Honey, please. Unsurprisingly, Wuornos had many diagnoses.

bookaholic1 The movie is good too 6mo
britt_brooke @bookaholic1 I‘ve never seen it, but may have to watch finally. 6mo
bookaholic1 They did a good job with the movie and the model that played her 6mo
Hooked_on_books That cover is disturbingly brilliant. 6mo
britt_brooke @Hooked_on_books 😂 It really is! 6mo

Cool, but also kind of gross. The cicadas are becoming more prevalent each day in Middle Tennessee. #audiowalk

AlaMich I live in Chicago which is sort of ground zero and I personally haven‘t seen any yet. 7mo

britt_brooke @AlaMich I‘ve seen a few in our driveway the last few days but nothing too crazy. My husband told me to check the trees while walking the dog and holy cow. Starting today, too, we can hear them at our house and it‘s loud! 7mo
britt_brooke @IuliaC @SamAnne Agree! I‘m fascinated. 7mo
britt_brooke @dabbe @Meshell1313 @JenReadsAlot @AmyG I‘m torn between fascination and yikes! It‘s supposed to get really wild soon. Like 1M per acre or something. I‘m not ready for all that. (edited) 7mo
dabbe @britt_brooke I think I would keel over and die. 😂 7mo
AlaMich They‘re sort of entertaining because they are slow and clumsy fliers, and they are deafening!! 7mo
Suet624 That must be wild! 7mo
britt_brooke @Suet624 I hear it‘s supposed to get pretty crazy the next couple of weeks, like to the point of not wanting to go outside. 🫣 7mo
Suet624 😳😳😳 7mo
Hooked_on_books They‘re enormous! 🫣 I‘m a little horrified! 7mo
britt_brooke @Hooked_on_books Yeah, some of them are pretty big, some are small. I‘m not looking forward to when they‘re out full force. 7mo

I've had this on my shelf for a few years and I've finally gotten round to it.
It isn't a story told from Aileen herself but from her interviews etc.
She was messed up from day one!
I could almost feel the lethal injection when it's being told through the book.

GingerAntics I saw a documentary on her. She was messed up. She never had a chance to be normal. It doesn‘t excuse what she did, but still. She was not right in the head. 5y
BookishRedhead @GingerAntics definitely. She's one of those where you would feel sorry for her until you realise WHO she is. 5y
GingerAntics Exactly. It‘s hard to tell just how much is nature and how much of how she is is nurture, but I fear there is plenty of nature involved. She just didn‘t seem to care at all until they threatened her girl friend. 5y
BookishRedhead @GingerAntics yep. Like how over the top she went with her going to heaven and "I hate men!" 5y
GingerAntics Yeah, that was a trip. She was an interesting person...when she wasn‘t killing men. 5y
