In this thoughtful, mesmerizing tale with echoes of Station Eleven, the author of An Uncommon Education follows a group of survivors thrown together in the aftermath of two major earthquakes that strike San Francisco within an hour of each otheran achingly beautiful and lyrical novel about the power of nature, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring strength of love. On Valentines Day, two major earthquakes strike San Francisco within the same hour, devastating the city and its primary entry points, sparking fires throughout, and leaving its residents without power, gas, or water. Among the disparate survivors whose fates will become intertwined are Max, a man who began the day with birthday celebrations tinged with regret; Vashti, a young woman who has already buried three of the people she loved most . . . but cannot forgot Max, the one man who got away; and Gene, a Stanford geologist who knows far too much about the terrifying earthquakes that have damaged this beautiful city and irrevocably changed the course of their lives. As day turns to night and fires burn across the city, Max and Vashtitrapped beneath the rubble of the collapsed Nob Hill Masonic Auditoriummust confront each other and face the truth about their past, while Gene embarks on a frantic search through the realization of his worst nightmares to find his way back to his ailing lover and their home.

#MarchIntoOz #WeveGottaGetOutOfThisPlace ?Having once been in one where some significant damage was done to the building I was in, earthquakes freak me out. This novel takes place in San Francisco when two major earthquakes strike within the hour. Several of the characters, including the main characters, are trapped in the Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium which has collapsed. "We've gotta get out of this place" is certainly what I'd be thinking.?

Cinfhen Oooh, this sounds good but so scary for you to have been through an earthquake 💜 7y
AmyG Whoa. I can‘t imagine living through an earthquake. His book sounds frightening. 7y
Jas16 I live a block away from the Masonic. Stacking this one although it will likely freak me out. (edited) 7y

"For the life of him, he still couldn't figure out why he'd never found a way to neatly write her off, as any normal man would do when a woman left him abruptly right in the middle of love. And with so much at stake. But then, to be left in the middle of something means it's perpetually unfinished."

Day 6 of #augustphotochallenge was tough. Apparently I don't have many books with minimalistic covers in my stacks. 😉 These two--a modernization of Austen's classic & a book about a group of people caught in a devastating earthquake in San Francisco have the most #minimalisticcovers I could find. This photo challenge is like a scavenger hunt through my shelves & piles --fun! 👍📚📚📚😀 #augustofpages #bookphotochallenge

TheSpinecrackersBookClub Glad to hear your enjoying it! It's definitely fun to see all the different books. 8y

A terrific backdrop for a story - modern day San Francisco in the midst of two huge earthquakes. Great potential to explore themes of frailty, vulnerability... also a love story, several in fact. But it fell short on development and depth for me.

Every morning in San Francisco was a bit like waking up on the edge of the earth: beautiful and damp and wild, full of the strange music people make, open-armed, into the wind.

I liked this: liked, not loved. It had some wonderful moments, but in my ratings system this is a 3.5 star novel. So-so feels unfair, since I mostly enjoyed the writing. It just felt repetitive at times. And it wasn't even a long book. And the comparisons to Station Eleven? Nope. But San Francisco!

I wanted to love this book but there were too many loose strings at the end for it to be lovable. I did like the way it featured San Francisco though.

I wish there was one extra rating. This wasn't quite a "Like" compared to some other books, but it was more than "So-So".

Taking every opportunity to read during this very busy week of my son's high school graduation festivities.

Sitting in a movie theatre reading a book because of a 30 minute delay due to a bad projector bulb. And that's why I never leave home without a book.

Megabooks I got stuck at a restaurant without one tonight. I didn't expect it to be busy but prom season. 9y

Finished this last night. I loved the first half of the book, then it fell apart for me in the middle and never quite recovered. I would definitely read this author again, though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

New book + cheap beer? Must be a Wednesday. I've heard some good things about this one, set in San Francisco during an earthquake.
