And You Know You Should Be Glad
And You Know You Should Be Glad: A True Story of Lifelong Friendship | Bob Greene
4 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
A highly personal and moving true story of friend-ship and remembrance from the New York Times bestselling author of Duty and Be True to Your School Growing up in Bexley, Ohio, population 13,000, Bob Greene and his four best friends -- Allen, Chuck, Dan, and Jack -- were inseparable. Of the four, Jack was Bob's very best friend, a bond forged from the moment they met on the first day of kindergarten. They grew up together, got into trouble together, learned about life together -- and were ultimately separated by time and distance, as all adults are. But through the years Bob and Jack stayed close, holding on to the friendship that had formed years before. Then the fateful call came: Jack was dying. And in this hour of need, as the closest of friends will do, Bob, Allen, Chuck, and Dan put aside the demands of their own lives, came together, and saw Jack through to the end of his journey. Tremendously moving, funny, heart-stirring, and honest, And You Know You Should Be Glad is an uplifting exploration of the power of friendship to uphold us, sustain us, and ultimately set us free.

Bob Greene grew up in Bexley OH, where I also grew up and now live with my husband (we've come full circle!) This book details his childhood friendships and the bonds they made that lasted into adulthood. Not only did my uncles go to school with Bob but my Mother-in-Law and her sisters were all buds with Bob and his sister too... small town life! 😆 #whenigrowup

Cinfhen I think that‘s what I miss most about living in the States!! I literally knew everyone, my kids were 6th generation Philadelphians 6y
Cinfhen I love full circle ⭕️ 6y
ravenlee My sister had a HS teacher who made such a big deal about living in Bexley - she wanted everyone to know she was so much better than they were (in Gahanna). It gave me a bad image of Bexley for a long time. 6y

Susanita @Suzze Cool! I think my sister saw them in DC in 1966 for something like $4. 6y
Suzze @Susanita I saw them twice in Detroit. 1964 $3 for balcony over Paul. 1966 $6 for main floor. ❤️❤️ 6y

Two books, both NF about my hometown. One is a the journal kept by the author while he was in high school in the 60s and the other is decades later when his best friend from high school was dying of cancer. They are both phenomenal and take me right back to my high school experience in the same school and the friendships I had. Pictured with my grandma‘s old purse, picturing the house my dad and I both grew up in. ♥️ #feelitstill #aprella

I chose this audio off my mountainous stack because I wanted to fit in a short read prior to the end of the year and it was the shortest one I found. It's basically Bob Greene's tribute to his best friend Jack, who had been diagnosed & ultimately passed away from cancer.

A bittersweet story. I think it would be more appealing to those within Jack's circle of friends & acquaintances. As an outsider, I found the stories borderline dull.

Reviewsbylola Bob Greene grew up in the town I live in, so I have read a few of his books. I thought this one was touching but it didn't have the same appeal to me as Be True to Your School, one of my favorite books ever. 8y
Coleen @Reviewsbylola Are you in Bexley? I've not read any of his others, but of the reviews I saw, this one didn't seem to be as good as the others. However, always more appealing & fascinating if you have knowledge of some of the background or setting! 8y
Reviewsbylola Yes, born and raised in Bexley and still here. 🙂 And I agree, it is definitely more of a fun read since I know the setting so well. 8y
