Gave up on this half way through. My step-daughter's anxiety could not be approached using the techniques described because she is too reluctant to talk about exactly what has upset her. This book does not (at least by half-way through) tell me how to break her out of silence to start these fascinating conversations that the book suggests. Otherwise, it seems like the book would be useful.

This book clearly provides the understanding of anxiety and its causes as well as the tools for helping children with anxiety. It was not at all a heavy read or overly clinical.

I feel empowered!

When the body's alarm system is mobilised without any immediate threat, you have anxiety. Unless you have been told that your body can create false alarms, you will continue thinking that there's a real danger.

Been struggling with my depression lately, so today my mum presented me with this Worry Monster to eat all the painful thoughts. She learned about it on her teachers' training course. She's bought one for her class of 6 year olds...as well as me, her 26yo daughter! Had to post and show you, @Libby1 💙

I started reading this book ages ago but still haven't finished it!

For anyone with children who struggle with anxiety I thought you might enjoy seeing what I picked up earlier today.

It's a Worry Monster. It has a zipper in its mouth and the child can write down their worry and "feed" the Worry Monster.

If you live in the UK they're available for Qe from The Works bargain bookstores.

LauraAndTaraAndBooks Thank you so much for remembering! That looks brilliant, I shall get one asap. MiniMe came home today with a "sadness cup." Each kid had a cup and their classmates wrote something nice about them to put in it, so that if ever anyone was feeling sad, they could read the little slips and feel better. Some of the comments were so beautiful and uplifting. These 7yr olds are nicer to each other than a lot of the adults I know!! 7y

For the most part, I found this book to be very helpful. It was a little repetitious at times, but maybe that can't be helped because people may skip around in the book, and some information is relevant to various issues. Overall, a good book.

I've started employing some of these strategies with my 8yo, and I'm already seeing changes in her behavior. I'm also trying to use them on myself! Time will tell. I'm resistant and not the best patient.

On a more encouraging note, many of the coping strategies are mechanisms I have discovered on my own. That said, the ones that are new to me might help both of us!

I picked this book up to find new ways to help my anxious 8 yo. Little did I know that apparently my way of coping with the world is exactly what she's trying to teach kids not to do! I think I see a problem here....

I just finished the audiobook, which may not be the most recent version. Chansky explains forms of anxiety and ways parents can help their kids (and themselves!) cope. Her work is based on a cognitive-behavioral approach (CBT), which has evidence behind it. There are other approaches that are evidence-based, too, although after reading her book, you'd think CBT is the only way to go (it isn't).
