Expanding my Penguin Classics collection
A short hard-hitting book, this was the first narrative of a black woman to be published in Britain in 1831. Mary Prince tells of being born into slavery in Bermuda, horrific brutality as she's sold on to Antigua, working the Salt pans on Turks Island and eventually coming to England. Although slavery has been abolished in Britain, she would remain a slave were she to return to her husband in Antigua. The book was subject to libel cases 👇
