Bailedbailed

After 60 pages I am giving this book a HARD PASS (if you couldn‘t tell by the above graphic)!

If you believe that all Native Americans are savages, brute and murderous, set on killing everyone that crosses their path then this is the book for you! If you also believe in the benevolent white colonist just trying to make his way across the country unharmed then this is the book for you!

I just can‘t do it guys.
👇🏽

TheNextBook I honestly tried. I was giving this book the benefit of the doubt. I was trying to read it and see what it was they were subjectively trying to say but I just couldn‘t take it anymore. The tone the writers have towards Native Americans is so dismissive and hostile, while the tone for colonist is the complete opposite and I just wont read almost 400 pages of that utter bs. So no. I‘m bailing and oh well. 6y
DGRachel Oh no. No no no no no. There‘s no way I could read that. Thanks for the review! 6y
TheNextBook @dgrachel I‘m going to tag you in the section I quoted! That was too much for me... 6y

WhatDeeReads 🙅🏾‍♀️ 6y
TheNextBook @WhatDeeReads I could not! I would end up throwing this book across the room! 6y
8little_paws Holy crap. Hard pass indeed 6y
Kristy_K Thanks for the review! I️ almost bought this today but I‘ll pass now. 6y
RidgewayGirl Ugh. I was given this book as a gift last year. I wonder if they‘ll notice if it disappears? 6y
AshleyHoss820 Ew! I'd say, if you're interested in Native American history, go with I Am A Man by Joe Starita or Black Elk Speaks! This book can keep its nonsense. 6y
TheNextBook @AshleyHoss820 Thanks for the rec. i walked all the way away from this and no regrets! 6y
AshleyHoss820 @TheNextBook I don't blame you! Life's too short! 😊 6y

Somebody, ANYBODY, tell me I‘m being paranoid! Tell me I‘m seeing things! Tell me I am being oversensitive. @Notafraidofwords am I overreacting or does the top section have a completely different tone then the second section 😳 Is it just me?!

Weigh in because to me its subtle but there!

Notafraidofwords Nope nope nope. It‘s such a hostile tone. What the.... 6y
TheNextBook @Notafraidofwords So it‘s not just me! It‘s so alarming and discomfiting for me because it tries to be subtle. This is the beginning of chapters 2 and 4. And I was taken aback by both. But these tones carry on throughout each chapter. I can‘t 6y
Notafraidofwords @TheNextBook this type of thing also scares me, because if you‘re not vigilant...you don‘t notice the shift in tone. 6y

TheNextBook @Notafraidofwords and if this is the only book you read on the topic and don‘t learn from Native voices then this is the only reference you have! 6y
TheNextBook @DGRachel I just... tell me if I‘m being paranoid! 6y
DGRachel No, I don‘t think you‘re being paranoid. It‘s offensive and the conclusions drawn in the first section just ring false. I think bailing was the right choice. 6y
TheNextBook @WhatDeeReads look at this nonsense! I refuse 6y
WhatDeeReads @TheNextBook NOPE!👎🏾 6y
Heretherebedragons Whoa. 😟😑 6y
TheNextBook @8little_paws yeah.... this 6y
JSW This is horrible. Shame on the author and publisher of this. 6y
TheNextBook @Heretherebedragons right... I mean. Part of me really wanted to finish and that got me through 60 pages and then I was done. 6y
TheNextBook @JSW I mean! This is the image they wanted to push. It has to be right? 6y
Heretherebedragons @TheNextBook Yeah, I don't blame you. 6y
TheNextBook @Kristy_K @RidgewayGirl I‘ve been tagging people in this one so they can see the language these two guys were using! The tones of the text, in my opinion, are completely different 6y
Kristy_K @TheNextBook I️ agree with you! The tone in these two passages are completely different. You can tell he‘s purposely trying to paint Native Americans in a bad light. 6y
ghosthost You‘re not seeing things. 6y
TheNextBook @ghosthost I even showed it to my husband and asked “Do you see this?” I‘m glad other people are chiming in because this is ridiculous. 6y
ghosthost I was a bit annoyed about the Norse comment too. 6y

Alright, so... Let‘s see how this goes. I made it through the prologue and I have thoughts...

It‘s very interesting to read one book about Native history from a Native author and completely different reading Native history from a nonNative author! So far, I‘m not feeling the tone of Drury and Clavin. It feels really biased and scewed against the Natives. I‘ll be checking in throughout this book. Let‘s see how/if this changes.

I‘ve heard mixed reviews of this one but since it‘s on the “must read” list I made, I‘m going to give it a go. Wish me luck.

Notafraidofwords Is this written by a Native American? 6y
TheNextBook @Notafraidofwords I just really don‘t care for the tone. I‘m about 50 pages in and he is painting the Sioux as nothing more than brutal, blood thirsty murderers. And Red Cloud had never planned on abiding by the treaty. I‘m just sitting here trying to figure out when we are going to discuss the behavior of the colonist! 6y
Notafraidofwords @TheNextBook you‘re a much better person than me. I would have bailed! 6y
