Judy and I
Judy and I: My Life with Judy Garland | Sid Luft
6 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
The third of Judy Garland's five husbands, Sid Luft was the one man in her life who stuck around. He was chiefly responsible for the final act of Judy's meteoric career, producing her iconic, Oscar-nominated performance in A Star Is Born and expertly shaping her concert career. Previously unpublished, and only recently found, Sid Luft's intimate autobiography tells their story. Their romance lasted Judy's lifetime, despite the separations, the reconciliations, and the divorce. Under Luft's management, Judy Garland came back, bigger than ever, building a singing career that rivaled Sinatra's. However, Judy's drug dependencies and suicidal tendencies put a tremendous strain on their relationship. Despite everything, Sid never stopped loving Judy and never forgave himself for not being able to ultimately save her from the demons that drove her to an early death.

Mehso-so

I came to this with a degree of cynicism. I wondered how much authenticity would be sacrificed to spin. I had already pegged Luft as one of the many villains of the piece. And it is hard not to judge him harshly - he admits he was an enabler. But he admits his failings too and he obviously deeply regrets he couldn't save Judy from her demons. The writing is a little stodgy and I'd describe the book overall as interesting rather than fascinating.

Finally - FINALLY! - finished this one. Need to digest before I review but it left me feeling melancholy. Judy was a unique talent and yet her life was a mess. How many times since her untimely end has that pattern been repeated? How much creativity & talent lost to drugs? Not to mention the huge emotional impact on family & loved ones.

So sad 😢😢😢😢

#2018CHECKIN

1. 25. Well, tagged is 25th but I'm kinda stuck on it. Life keeps getting in the way - how rude! 😉

2. Target is 75. Bang on schedule ... for now ...

3. The Overstory, Sight, Red Clocks, Beartown.

4. The sequel to Beartown. I plan to abandon my reading schedule completely the second it comes out.

coffeenebula I have the same goal and I‘m at 25 books, too! #twinsies 😂 6y
Stephen11 This is embarrassing: how do I repost this photo so I can play? ☺️ 6y
readingjedi @Stephen11 Well, I just do a screen shot on my phone of someone else's post then use Litsy's editing tool to crop it to size. There is probably an easier, more tech savvy way to do it but I don't know it! 6y
RaimeyGallant 25! You're amazing! 6y

At about 20% on this one. It has already won the award for most names dropped per page!

On a side note, I can't get my head around the fact that The Wizard of Oz is nearly 80 years old!!!

Thanks to #netgalley for this book. Review to follow on completion.

Gosh, another #netgalley approval. I have rather swamped myself. My feedback rating is plummeting. But, heck, if they wanna keep sending me free books, what's a girl to do?

Am intrigued to read this one. Judy's story is as fascinating as it is tragic. Given Sid's contribution to her decline & destruction, I'm unsure how I feel about hearing his side of events.

Reecaspieces I want this book! When I was little I read a biography about Liza. It was geared for children. But I remember she used to keep a stomach pump in the closet In case her mother overdosed. Such a sad way to grow up. I don‘t think I will ever forget that. But Judy garland was such an amazing talent 6y
Updrifting I remember being fascinated by an interview with Barbara Streisand following Garlands death about the first time they performed together. Garland was already famous, Streisand wasn't yet, and Streisand reported how they held hands. She said she was surprised by how nervous Garland was, which made her want to comfort her. 6y
rubyslippersreads I'm with you in not being sure I want to read what Sid has to say, but I'm still curious about the book. And I'm wishing the best for their daughter Lorna, who was just diagnosed with a brain tumor. You've probably already read her book, but if not, I recommend it. 6y

Velvetfur I read a Judy biog a few years ago and loved it, what a fascinating story her life was, and yet so tragic 🙁 I'd be interested to read this. 6y
EKonrad It‘s definitely interesting to hear his side of things and his memories of her. But I‘d honestly read anything about her. 😊 6y
EKonrad Ps I‘m new to NetGalley and was wondering if there are any consequences if you have a low rating? I got approved for so many books and don‘t have enough time to read all of them! 😊 6y
readingjedi @EKonrad You're less likely to be approved for books if you've got a low rating - in theory. My rating is below the suggested 80% but I'm still receiving about 3/4 of the books I request! 6y

Pickpick

As a huge fan of Judy Garland it was really fun to read stories told by her third husband. There were some great details like her loving spaghetti and descriptions of nights when she would call JFK on the phone just to sing to him that made this book worth reading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
