The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain
The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain | Charles Dickens
4 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain is the last story in the series of Charles Dickens' Christmas classics. The protagonist, Professor Redlaw, approaches the holidays unable to forgive or forget about events from his unhappy past. A ghost appears to the professor with a seemingly ideal offer: he will allow Redlaw to completely forget about any past sorrow or wrongdoing. But when the professor accepts the deal, he gets more than he bargained for... Published 5 years after A Christmas Carol, this is a disappointing addition to Dickens‘ Christmas franchise. It‘s fine but in no way measures up to the splendor, adventure and pathos of his most well known Christmas story. Dickens has an eye for detail when writing people even when the story is a bit weak.

To say, I did enjoy this story .. It was a laugh of strange phenomenons; a bargain to forget a sorrowful loss, rather makes worse conditions, spreading pretty much like a pandemic. In times of harsh poverty, the over-emotional reactions won't help one's health. 😂 This could go with Beckett's mysterious 'Waiting For Godot'.

MayJasper Sounds quite strange 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm drawn to the person who likes like they're hiding behind the chair on the left. 😆 Do you read a lot of Dickens or is it just for the holiday? 4y
Dan_SpiderCrafts @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am looking to read all of Dickens stories at some point. 'The Old Curiosity Shop' is a favourite of mine, that had a wild mix of cheery wonders and the dark sides of poverty and survival. A next one sometime on my TBR is 'A Tale of Two Cities'. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'll have have to check that one out then. I've only read A Christmas Carol but I liked it. It didn't feel bogged down by the stuffy language of the time. I'm going to try a few others, too. 4y

An hour, to 2/3, in 2 readathons .. 😶

I don't know what to say. 😹 While 'A Christmas Carol' is a clearly narrated story, 'The Haunted Man' is one oddity of a flying Christmas adventure. 🍄🎄 Professor Redlaw's ghostly bargain, to forget his sorrows, then spreads frenzied memory loss phenomenas? 😂 I'm totally confused!

TheSpineView 👍🤩📖 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 😆😆If I can fit this one in, I'll give it a go. Sounds interesting. 4y

An hour, in 2 readathons, between 3 long parts of The Haunted Man. This is a Dickens Christmas ghost story that I'm determined to follow, and make sense of. 😹 Every dialogue seems drearily over-excitable! 👻

TheSpineView Sounds good!👍😍😊 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Great job! ❤? I'm also loving your description of "drearily over-excitable." 4y
