A Booklist Best Crime Novel Debut Dont miss this one.USA Today "A masterful job." -Michael Connelly It is called kaamos--two weeks of unrelenting darkness and soul-numbing cold that falls upon Finnish Lapland, a hundred miles into the Arctic Circle, just before Christmas. Some get through it with the help of cheap Russian alcohol; some sink into depression. This year, it may have driven someone mad enough to commit murder. The brutalized body of a beautiful Somali woman has been found in the snow, and Inspector Kari Vaara must find her killer. It will be a challenge in a place where ugly things lurk under frozen surfaces, and silence is a way of life.

Snow Angels the first book in the Inspector Vaara series set in Finland, which I read thanks to a recommendation from @Tove_Reads . I really enjoyed this and a reminder that I need to get back to the series. Unfortunately the author died in 2014. #SeasonsReadings #SnowAngel

Cinfhen 👍🏻 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @TrishB But Finland is not Scandinavia. 5y
TrishB @Tove_Reads apologies! Made an assumption 😁 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Shows our lack of precise geographical knowledge! If you had asked me I would have mistakenly said Finland was in Scandinavia! One website I just checked made the same mistake! Then found Wikipedia which says 👇 (edited) 5y
Andrew65 ‘The term Scandinavia in local usage covers the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. However, in English usage, the term also sometimes refers to the Scandinavian Peninsula, or to the broader region including Finland and Iceland, which is always known locally as the Nordic countries.‘ Apologies for this mistake. 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Sadly, it‘s very common. We‘re just one of the Nordic countries, but not Scandinavia. @TrishB 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I can imagine because my geography knowledge wasn‘t precise enough of this part of Europe. But as they say you learn something new each day, and this is it for today so at least I won‘t repeat the mistake.😊 (edited) 5y

Pickpick

This was a crime book based in Finland and had some very gritty elements to the murder and autopsy. Overall I really enjoyed this book and the lead character. There were a few twists and surprises in the story and it kept you guessing to the end, I also liked the way it gave you a feel of life in Finland especially during those dark winter nights in the far north. I hope to continue the series. #LitsyPassport #PassportLitsy #Finland #crime #noir

AceOnRoam What app is this that records the reading time? 6y
Busha1984 Wondering the same about the app. 6y
Andrew65 @Busha1984 Bookout app, Bookout.com . The Leio app also records reading time, although only just exploring that one. They are both free to download but then limited books you can add to them, and a small charge is needed for full access. The Bookout app does have one or two glitches still but despite this enjoy using it and ideal for posts on Litsy. http://leio.co @AceOnRoam (edited) 6y

Busha1984 @Andrew65 thank you!! 6y
AceOnRoam Thanks! 6y
SilversReviews I am giving Bookout a try. It seems a little difficult to use, but I will keep working with it. Do you like it? I have the app...so there is a webpage too? @Andrew65 @Busha1984 (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @SilversReviews @AceOnRoam @Busha1984 Overall I do like it and have been using it for up to a year, following seeing another Litten use it. Two main issues. 1. Since linking it to the cloud (for syncing purposes) it can freeze for a few seconds sometimes when you are doing something. 2. Sometimes the timings can go awry or not be accredited to the right book which can be frustrating but despite these issues I do enjoy using it. 6y
Andrew65 @SilversReviews @AceOnRoam @Busha1984 You soon work out how to use it and can add your own books and photos of covers, and can edit page length if your book varies. You can also use it for monthly and yearly book targets as well as looking at Pages Read and time read over some periods. The website is just a link for downloading it. @DGRachel also uses it. Hope this helps. It is free to download so can always trial using it for no cost. (edited) 6y
SilversReviews @Andrew65 @AceOnRoam @Busha1984 @DGRachel @catebutler Thanks for the tips. I just have trouble updating it...things seem to stick or I don‘t know where to go. LOL!! 6y
Tove_Reads Doesn‘t Kari Vaara move to Helsinki after the first book? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes it looks like the rest of the series takes place in Helsinki. 6y

Quite stark figures and the differences quite incredible. One wonders why such a difference. @Tove_Reads

Tove_Reads Aileen Wuornos was part Finnish. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Seems like one for the nature vs. nurture debate. 6y
Christine11 That‘s fascinating - I wonder why ? 6y

Andrew65 @Christine11 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Tove_Reads It is a fascinating statistic, and when you explore further (see links below) certain countries are affected much more by serial killers whilst others like Finland are hardly affected, even Aileen Wuornos whilst her mother was Finnish she was born in America. It makes you wonder if it is something to do do with the type of society in that country (nurture) but what exactly I don‘t know. 6y

Possibly a touch strong, 😂, or does anyone else find this barbaric?

BookishMe Yea, not so much barbaric as unhygienic. How do home owners keep up with cleaning the dirt from outside?? 6y
Cathythoughts My husband refuses to take off his shoes in the house 🙄. I‘m working on it .... 6y
Andrew65 @Cathythoughts Must make for some interesting discussions. 6y

Andrew65 @BookishMe That I can understand but barbaric seems too strong. 6y
JacqMac It‘s such an American thing to me. We lived in the US for a bit and I couldn‘t understand why people were always wearing their shoes in my house. I thought it was so horribly rude. It took me awhile to realize it was just one of those cultural difference things. But still, so rude. 😂 6y
Pamwurtzler @Cathythoughts Mine too. Makes me crazy. 6y
Tove_Reads In Finland it is! You simply don‘t do that - not at home or at anyone else‘s place. It‘s just wrong, wrong, wrong. 6y
BookishMe @Andrew65 and I have heard otherwise - 'barbaric' (of Asians) to remove footwear. Lol 😂 😂 6y
Cathythoughts @Andrew65 😂😂😂 6y
Cathythoughts @Pamwurtzler yes, thankyou ! Makes me crazy too 😠🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️why can‘t they understand! 6y
CouronneDhiver I don‘t like it. Socks or indoor slippers are fine, but not shoes. 6y
LeahBergen It IS barbaric (especially here in Canada). 😂 6y

Starting Snow Angels which is set in Finland for #LitsyPassport #PassportLitsy Aiming for one country a month but bit behind as this is the first country I have got to!

Tove_Reads Haven‘t read his books, but the first one is set in Kittilä where we had a log cabin when I was a child. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Looking at the Map it does seem to be quite Northern and fairly remote (?), The ski resort sounds good. How far would that be from where you live? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads The Book is quite an easy read but a bit on the gritty side - enjoyable so far. 6y
Tove_Reads It‘s slightly less than 1000 km, about 11 hours by car. The ratio reindeer to human in Lapland is 1 to 1. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Thanks for the information, that‘s a lot of reindeer! 6y

Panpan

This book seems to revel in sex, violence, and gore. A dark, convoluted story. There were also quite a few unbelievable moments relating to the investigation. Don't know where your story line is going? Toss in an unrelated murder.

charl08 Ha! Pass on this one then. 7y
