Pickpick

This was cool to see the versions of Wonder Woman throughout comic history. The original ones, of course, were a little painful to get through. Falling in love with Steve Trevor while he‘s unconscious, and you‘ve never met a man before? Come on now. Even though her origin story was reiterated a few times, it was good to see the updates. Excellent character and love the tie-ins to Greek mythology.

Back then they called this her "Magic Girdle". I'm not even joking. (this is my youth talking, but what even is a girdle?? Like spanx? Control tops on tights? It sounds painful and not fun)

Leniverse I thought you were supposed to to "girdle your loins". ? I'm not entirely sure what loins are, besides a word overused by D. H. Lawrence, but I'm pretty sure it's not synonymous with "waist". ? 6y
tournevis Think corset, but without the whalebone. Like a really a control top on steroids. And beige. 6y

queerbookreader @Leniverse That guy in The Devil Wears Prada said it in the movie "gird your loins"! That's all I know about that word!! @tournevis That sounds super gross ? wouldn't it squash your internal organs?? 6y
tournevis @queerbookreader No, because no whale bone. 6y
tournevis @Leniverse That's what the word means exactly. 6y
tournevis @Leniverse The loins are inside 6y
queerbookreader @tournevis @Leniverse I know what a loincloth is ??? 6y
queerbookreader @tournevis Yeah it was on this one episode of spongebob hahahaha they wore loincloths. Okay I get it now 6y
Leniverse @tournevis The loins are internal organs? I rather thought it was a gender neutral euphemism for the sex bits and surrounding area. 😂 6y
tournevis @Leniverse It's all the inner bits and the genitals, which might as well be inner too. For a woman, her biological children are the fruits of her loins, for example. 6y
JenP This whole conversation is the best 😂 6y
queerbookreader @tournevis How are you supposed to pee in a girdle if it looks like that photo because it looks like you'd be doing gymnastics in the bathroom 6y
tournevis @queerbookreader There are clasps at the crotch. 6y
tournevis @JenP I'm having so much fun talking about material culture outside the classroom!!! 6y
teebe Oh my god this discussion 🤣👏🏼 6y
queerbookreader @tournevis Omg my mom just came home and I asked her about peeing in a girdle and she showed me an old one of hers but it didn't have clasps! Just this hole!!!!! I'm amazed 6y
queerbookreader @tournevis Are spanx just the modern day version of girdles then because these remind me an awful lot of spanx 6y
queerbookreader @tournevis @Leniverse I just remembered this one bob's burgers episode where Teddy was wearing a "Boydle" which is just a girdle but for men oh my god I understand everything now 6y
tournevis @queerbookreader Yes, I remember those with holes. Those My aunts and mother owned had clasps, they would not buy any other type. 6y
tournevis @queerbookreader @Leniverse There is also the Bill Shatner as Captain Kirk joke. 6y
tournevis @queerbookreader Pretty much, yeah. 6y
queerbookreader @tournevis Do you not wear underwear with those or did underwear have clasps in the crotch then too? 6y
tournevis @queerbookreader They are underwear. Nothing underneeth, so hole. 6y
queerbookreader @tournevis this has been a fascinating discussion thank you for teaching us about girdles 6y
Leniverse @tournevis @queerbookreader Ok, but so how is what Wonder Woman is wearing on that picture a girdle? It just looks like a wide belt? Or a corset belt, really. 6y
Abby-J I have learned so much about loins today. 6y
tournevis @Leniverse It girds her loins, so close enough, I guess? You have to remember that much of WW and her outfit were call backs to BDSM and would have been recognizable as such in the 1930s. 6y
tournevis @Abby-J 👍 6y
queerbookreader @Leniverse @tournevis I cannot imagine a girdle being considered kinky 😱 but I'm also asexual so I admit my imagination is limited 6y
queerbookreader @Abby-J We learn lots of things about life and anatomy here on this app 💅🏽 6y
tournevis @queerbookreader @Leniverse *Anything* that exists is considered kinky by *somebody*. 6y

Finally cracked the cover. Written under the table of contents:

"The comics reprinted in this volume were produced in a time when racism played a larger role in society and popular culture both consciously and unconsciously. They are reprinted without alteration for historical reference."

1) First of all, wowza. That this needs to be said makes me go ?
2) Second, THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO SEE IN HISTORICAL BOOKS. THIS RIGHT HERE. ??

laurieluna I disagree with the erasure of problematic texts, but forewords putting the contents into context for future generations is a win! We can't remember the lessons we have learned if we erase the history of it! 🙌 6y
queerbookreader @miralunasbooknook Exactly. So often in historical books with references to images that are super racist, the book doesn't say anything about the culture of the time. I don't want authors and editors to erase the reality, but I want to see them make disclaimers like these 6y
queerbookreader @miralunasbooknook Like this one photo book I read that was a collection of super old Halloween photos, and a solid quarter of them were white kids in blackface, and the author didn't say anything about it! Like! Buddy! This is a teachable moment! Teach people that this was the reality of the time back then, and that it's obviously not acceptable now! 6y

laurieluna @queerbookreader oh my 😱 yeah if it was published in at least the last 20 years I would expect something saying that it is no longer acceptable and why. I can't believe when I hear that their are still people doing it for halloween. 😬 6y
queerbookreader @miralunasbooknook Honest to god, that book was a nightmare. It was full of blackface and redface, too. And the fact that people are still doing it today?? 😒 6y
teebe I dunno... the context is nice but a note suggesting that racism played a larger role in society back then (with the implication being that it doesn‘t now) is weird. I‘d personally rather one that acknowledges the continuities that still exist between racism back then and now. (edited) 6y
queerbookreader @teebe Yes!! Even better. There's still that underlying implication that racism is a thing of the past with how they said this. Although I think they could fill a whole separate book if they discussed the similarities between racism today and racism back then 6y
teebe @queerbookreader if they were being specific then yes, definitely but “it was a problem then, it‘s a problem now” pretty well sums it up lol. 6y
