Nine Days to Christmas: A Story from Mexico is an (RF) book by Marie Hall Est and Aurora Labastida. In addition, Nine Days to Christmas is a Caldecott award winner. This story is about a girl named Ceci who is excited about Christmas and La Posada. La posada is a tradition in Mexico where they spend nine days in a series of celebrations. Furthermore, this book is great for shared reading (SR) because of its length and opportunity for discussions.

StephanyNunez I enjoyed this book because it can teach students about culture and tradition in Mexico. The source below is about the importance of sharing traditions in the classroom and shares activities you can complete. https://www.edutopia.org/articlesharing-holiday-traditions-classroomhickleberryp... 3y
StephanyNunez Because of the story and resource the UDL principle connecting with the lesson is 2.4 (Promote understanding across languages) ESOL strategy 24 (Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum)#UCFLAE3414SP21 3y
ToddSalerno I have not heard of La Posada before, even though I celebrate the Christmas holiday. This is a fantastic book to use for winter holidays around the world. I would love to put together a unit highlighting diverse celebrations. Edutopia is also my go to resource for teaching articles. I follow them on Instagram. 3y
DrSpalding What a wonderful realistic fiction title to use during a social studies unit. In a couple of grade levels, there are social studies standards that relate to teaching children about Mexico regarding geography and specific traditions/holidays. Excellent job aligning English learner 24… Perfect! 3y

This Caldecott winner is not your typical Christmas story. This art in this story very much focuses on color and drawing your attention on certain pieces. The background of the story is in black and white but the important features of each page are brought to light by color.

“Each night for nine nights before Christmas there would be a posadas, and each night at a different house”. This is key information to know about the story. The teacher or parent would have to read this part slow so the children really pick up on this one.

Blurb: This story is very long which could be an issue in telling a classroom. The illustrations are a bit dull, but this story is very interesting for me. This would be better for an older elementary crowd.

Award: Caldecott
Review: This book is about a little girl who gets to experience the traditional Mexican customs, posada, for the first time. This party last nine days before Christmas. This book explores the entire process of a posada including Ceci, the main character, trying all of the delicious foods and picking out a special piñata. This is a unique take to a Christmas story and a great read for anyone.

For some reason I woke up thinking about this children's Christmas book today, even though Christmas is only 4 days away now. I used to love it when I was little. Anyone else remember this one?

Lacythebookworm I can remember it being displayed in my elementary school library! Great memory! ❤️ 7y
Suet624 Shoot! For some reason I hadn't accepted the fact that Christmas is only FOUR DAYS AWAY!!!! 7y
