The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project | Peter Turner
4 posts | 1 to read
Few films have had the influence and impact of The Blair Witch Project (1999). Its arrival was a horror cinema palette cleanser after a decade of serial killers and postmodern intertextuality, a bare bones 'found footage' trend setter. In this Devil's Advocate, Peter Turner tells the story of the film from his conception and production then provides a unique analysis of the techniques used, their appeal to audiences and the themes that helped make the film such an international hit, including the pionerring internet marketing.

As a 90s teenager, can confirm that attending a showing of The Blair Witch Project was an *event*. I saw it at the little indie theatre referenced in this article from the Detroit News, and wound up working there a little while later. When we showed Kevin Smith's Dogma, a religious group called in a bomb threat; I was shocked but a co-worker said nonchalantly, "We got these all the time during #TheBlairWitchProject." ??? #HorrorSeason
@Klou

Klou My gosh! That's... wow! 4y
Andrea313 @Klou Yeeeeah, it was a little nuts. Religious groups had a whole MOMENT with being loudly anti-media at that time. Movies like Blair Witch were definitely satanic, but then so was everything from Marilyn Manson to Pokemon. 🤷‍♀️ 4y
Klou @Andrea313 aaah okay. 4y
sgoffe I remember seeing this in a packed movie theater and practically crawling out of my skin, I was so scared! I still remember the final scene 😬 4y
Andrea313 @sgoffe Yes! I had been in packed theatres and concert venues, but had never seen so many people turn out for a movie. And it was equal parts creepy and cool to see it on the big screen! 4y
