The Juniper Tree
The Juniper Tree: And Other Tales from Grimm | Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm K. Grimm
9 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
Back in Print! Originally published as a two-volume set forty years ago, The Juniper Tree is distinguished first by the selection of stories. Lore Segal and Maurice Sendak jointly culled 27 from the 210 in the complete collection, and their contents page presents a fascinating critical statement. The translations are another distinguishing quality of the Segal/Sendak edition. Both translators have been painstakingly faithful to the German texts; they have not cut, retold, or bowdlerized. In addition, Segal and Jarrell bring to their renderings of Grimm the grace and precision that are characteristic of their own original prose. One of the most acclaimed Grimm collections published in English, available again An elegant, must-have edition for every home library New lower-price of $19.99, formerly $28.00 Includes standards such as Hansel and Gretel, The Fisherman and His Wife, and The Frog King as well as lesser-known masterpieces such as the title story and The Goblins Each story contains a full-page picture by Maurice Sendak Four stories translated by Jarrell, the rest by Segal

#ReadingResolutions Day 15: In my review of these two books, I juxtaposed the #OldAndNew versions of the same faery tales; the old magnificently illustrated by Maurice Sendak, and the new created by the unparalleled Shaun Tan. Full review here: https://gatheringbooks.org/2016/01/11/saturday-reads-6/ - will tag host once Litsy is working.

Cinfhen I'm always amazed that these stories and drawings were created for children 😱they're a little frightening... 8y
LectricSheep @cinfhen at least the dog is cute. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 8y
Seshat Indeed, @Cinfhen but The Fisherman and His Wife isn't too bad as these things go. Also, folk and fairy tales weren't necessarily made for children. 8y

Seshat @Cinfhen and @LectricSheep You have to love Maurice Sendak. 8y
Cinfhen Sendak' drawings are fantastic and easily recognizable 💕 8y
Seshat @Cinfhen for sure. I have this 2 vol set of Grimm's with his illustrations, obviously. I also have My Brother's Book and Dear Mili. I got the Trident Edition of that crazy Melville book, Pierre and the Ambuities just for the Sendak illustrations. 😀 8y

#aprilamazingreads #day7 #bestintranslation I guess I will go with the Brothers Grimm. I thought about highlighting the Rumi poems or the Oedipus plays of Sophocles. @jess.how

Of course I got books - and a glorious Voyage e-reader which I adore. It was my reader niece, though (the one to whom I can send a copy of The Secret History and say "read this so we can talk about it") who blew me away with thoughtfulness. This is a two volume, first edition with illustrations by Maurice Sendak. It's a treasure.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Wow! That is so cool. Yay your niece! 8y
