I realized almost none of my 360 students could recite a nursery rhyme. So I pulled all of my mother geese 😂 and we did some nursery rhyme nibbling. I took this home to study it more carefully as I am obsessed with the Opies. Each page is illustrated by a different artist making this an epic treasure. 🪿 🪿 🪿 🪿 🪿

wanderinglynn That‘s just sad that none could recite a nursery rhyme. And what a cool edition! 4mo
mandarchy @wanderinglynn it is and I was/wasn't surprised. Only a handful could remember parts of Hey diddle diddle. Most knew the itsy bitsy spider, but that was it. We were reaing a book that referenced several and the kids had no idea. 4mo

#dailyphotochallenge 1. Red Cover

None of these are on my TBR for December as I've read almost all of them before, although A History of Burning is badly overdue (I'm very behind on my ARCs). The worm-eaten “The Crisis“ (by the American Churchill) is the oldest physical book I own. The tagged book is the first book I ever owned! I'm sure which ones I got in university are fairly obvious. 😆

This is my son Griffin (also seen as The Grinch a couple of my posts back) reading to his son, Canon. Yesterday, he pulled a couple of his old picture books (think 1990‘s) from my shelves for Canon. All of a sudden I recalled the tagged stored in a bucket of our paperback picture books. What are the odds (even the spelling)!?

@CoverToCoverGirl

AmyG Awwwwww so sweet. My son reads my grandson his childhood truck books. Makes me smile with all the memories. 2y

marleed @Gissy @CoverToCoverGirl @Reggie @UwannaPublishme Thank you! It is fun to have grandbabies as the background of my pics these days! And I can‘t believe I‘ve had that book in my collection for some 30 years and then all of a sudden the title and it‘s significance just popped into my head. It took me all of 3 minutes to locate the book - and the look in my son‘s face when I handed it to him was priceless! 2y
DivineDiana Priceless indeed!❤️❤️📚 (edited) 2y
marleed @DivineDiana It‘s divine :). I found a used hard copy online (my copy is paperback) and had to take my chances and order it. It arrived quickly! It has library markings but is in very good condition. I can‘t wait to give it to my Griffin and Canon at Christmas. 2y

I think, at this point, I have to say I am just not that into Sendak‘s books. This is the third I‘ve read, and while it is a Caldecott Honor Book, I thought this was just a little out there. This has been challenged and banned for nudity, religion and witchcraft. Plus, the idea of goblins snatching babies in the middle of the night would have freaked me out as a kid. Oh well…at least I tried it! #BBRC #PictureBook #LetterO

mabell Hmmm not a pleasant sounding bedtime story! 2y
Librarybelle @mabell Definitely not! 2y
LibrarianRyan Agree. I didn‘t like this one either. 2y

Mickey falls asleep and has an adventure with bakers in a kitchen. Admittedly, I‘m not a follower of Sendak (I‘m not a fan of Where the Wild Things Are…don‘t hate me!), but I thought I would give this Caldecott Honor a try. It was just okay for me. I was a bit horrified by what the bakers do to Mickey. And, as you view the illustrations, you will guess why this book has been challenged so much over the years.. #BBRC #PictureBook Letter I

LibrarianRyan Yep. One I reference frequently. And I get the wild things. I‘m not the biggest fan either. 2y
Kerrbearlib This was one of my favorites as a child. My dad used to read it to me and I memorized most of it. ❤️ 2y

2⭐ The book barely made sense. In a way it reminds me of the David Bowie movie Labyrinth where the Goblin King comes and takes the baby away. Here the goblins take the baby away to marry the baby to a goblin. The sister comes in playing her horn, turns the goblins to steam and fights their way home again. According to the NYPL this book was banned for Nudity, religion, and witchcraft. I would not ban it for that, I would just have not bought it.

I chose this for #BBCRPictureBookLetterO cause I read it was Sendak‘s personal favorite of his own work. Also, I think it‘s interesting to see exactly what it looks like when picture books are banned & challenged for devil worship & satanic content. As far as that goes, think along the lines of the plot of Labyrinth (minus Bowie). Still, while goblins are the closest to anything demonic, by today‘s standards both the artwork & the text are dark ⬇️

IndoorDame and had me questioning if I would choose it for my own youngsters (and if so how young). I 💯 want the OPTION to choose it! And I personally like older, darker, fairy tales. And recognize that our world certainly hasn‘t gotten any easier to navigate since their time, so I‘m leaning towards yes. I‘d read this to a kid and see what reaction they had and what kind of conversation it sparked. 2y
DivineDiana Now I‘m curious about this book! 2y
IndoorDame @DivineDiana it can sometimes be tough to find, but if your library doesn‘t keep a physical copy there are read alouds of this on YouTube that will give you a pretty good idea 2y

DivineDiana Thank you. 🙂 2y
LibrarianRyan I have not read this sendak. I have read many of his others that have been banned, so now I must really read this. Off to ILL I go. 2y
