Long May She Reign
Long May She Reign | Rhiannon Thomas
The Girl of Fire and Thorns meets The Queen of the Tearling in this thrilling fantasy standalone about one girls unexpected rise to power. Freya was never meant to be queen. Twenty-third in line to the throne, she never dreamed of a life in the palace, and would much rather research in her laboratory than participate in the intrigues of the court. However, when an extravagant banquet turns deadly and the king and those closest to him are poisoned, Freya suddenly finds herself on the throne. She may have escaped the massacre, but she is far from safe. The nobles dont respect her, her councillors want to control her, and with the mystery of who killed the king still unsolved, she knows that a single mistake could cost her the kingdomand her life. Freya is determined to survive, and that means uncovering the murderers herself. Until then, she cant trust anyone. Not her advisers. Not the kings dashing and enigmatic illegitimate son. Not even her own father, who always wanted the best for her but also wanted more power for himself. As Freyas enemies close in and her loyalties are tested, she must decide if she is ready to rule and, if so, how far she is willing to go to keep the crown.

This book had a nice balance of science and court intrigue, reluctant hero and someone just trying to do their best. I liked Freya, and her friends, and her country‘s culture. It was pretty cool. But the problem is, I only LIKED everything. Maybe it‘s because I read this book for an assignment, so I had to overanalyze the CRAP out of it (which totally ruins books), but nothing about this wowed me. It was okay, but not outstanding.

Pickpick

I *mostly* enjoyed this but there were parts of the book that felt off and out of place (“oh she‘s wearing high heels” I was convinced that scene was a dream). I liked that the main character used science and logic, I liked when her and her friends acted like teen girls, I liked that she wasn‘t perfect. I ending was a bit anti climatic and rushed though and unrealistic.

I am pleasantly surprised by this book. It's a cute murder mystery that feels like historical fiction but is actually fantasy. I absolutely loved that Freya used science and logic to solve her problems (a rarity in North America). There's a little bit of romance but it's super low key. It's a little too Disney-fied of an ending for my liking but a decent fantasy stand alone. Lacked world building but I liked it.

GalacticBookwyrm89 May I ask what funko pops those are? And thanks for the review. That‘s my next read🤗📚 7y

Finally gonna try a go at this one again. I was so tired with fantasies last time so I put it back on my shelf a few chapters in...it's been creaming at me to pick it up since. Gorgeous cover but even more interesting.. it's a fantasy stand alone which is like finding a unicorn!

I read this one in a single sitting. I loved the characters, the plot, and the world itself. It was fast paced, plot driven, but still had some romance on the side. At first I was disappointed that there was no magic in this book since it is set in a fantasy world, but I ended up loving the fact that there was no magic. Very well done! You should definitely pick this one up. #YA #bookreview #yanovels #yabooks #fantasy

#Riotgrams Day 3: If I'm reading a print or ebook this is usually where you will find me curled up, often with a cat in my lap. (But I also love audiobooks, which are easier to read anywhere.) Current read is about a distant relative of the king who unexpectedly finds herself on the throne when most of the royal house is massacred at the king's birthday celebration.

This was just an ok read for me about a young girl who ascends to the throne after many members of the royal family are poisoned. I loved that it was a stand alone YA fantasy (which never happens!) and I enjoyed the strong female friendship. There was a lot of court politics as well as a romance that didn't exactly work for me.

I got this as an ARC from #yallfest and just got around to finishing it now. It was well written and a good story. But it took me a while to get into. And I found some of the plot to be slightly out of place.
