Warden's Daughter
Warden's Daughter | Jerry Spinelli
From Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli (Maniac Magee, Stargirl) comes the knockout story of a girl who must come to terms with her mother's death from inside the walls of a prison. Cammie O'Reilly is the warden's daughter, living in an apartment above the entrance to the Hancock County Prison. But she's also living in a prison of grief and anger about the mother who died saving her from harm when she was just a baby. And prison has made her mad. This girl's nickname is Cannonball. In the summer of 1959, as twelve turns to thirteen, everything is in flux. Cammie's best friend is discovering lipstick and American Bandstand. A child killer is caught and brought to her prison. And the only mother figures in her life include a flamboyant shoplifter named Boo Boo and a sullen reformed arsonist of a housekeeper. All will play a role in Cammie's coming-of-age. But one in particular will make a staggering sacrifice to ensure that Cammie breaks free from her past. Master storyteller Jerry Spinelli spins a tale of loss and redemption like no other. The Warden's Daughter shows that kindness and compassion can often be found where we least expect it. Praise for the works of Jerry Spinelli: Spinelli is a poet of the prepubescent. . . . No writer guides his young characters, and his readers, past these pitfalls and challenges and toward their futures with more compassion. The New York Times It's almost unreal how much the children's book still resonates. Bustle.com on Maniac Magee"

#TBRtemptation post 3! This middle-grade story from the Newberry Medalist follows 12-year-old Cammie O'Reilly. She lives in Hancock County Prison, not as a prisoner but as the warden's daughter. Her mother had died saving her life when she was a baby, and now, about to to turn 13, she most wants a mom. So, she'll search through the prison for a mother--maybe not the best place to do so, but she'll work with it. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

#TBRtemptation post! Now this is an interestingly premised children's book! Cammie is daughter of Hancock County Prison's warden. When not in school, she spends her days hanging out there with the women prisoners. Why? Well, she's coming up to her 13th birthday & she's searching for a mother figure (hers died protecting her when she was a baby). Prison might not be the best place to look, but it can surprise. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

I had to specifically ask for this one at the Random House booth. She said she would go check and see if they had any. I was lucky enough to get one, and realized today as I look at it that it's signed! Omg, score! 😍

I used to have this conversation with my parents but in reverse. I REFUSED to eat scrapple. My argument became stronger when I read the ingredients (something they had apparently never done before? They just knew it was a thing we eat, no questions asked.)

Yournewfriendsams 😬😬😬 I have never heard of this before. Definitely will steer clear! 8y
MrBook Yeah, I've avoided it as well, and I'm as carnivorous as we come as a species. Saw it in the grocery store yesterday and shook my head, lol. 8y
