This is probably one of my favorites by Stephen King. Some of the scenes in this book will stick in my head for the rest of my life and haunt me. This was such an excellent book and so underrated. I remember watching the movie when it came out and reading the book years ago but I am glad I revisited and read it again to remind myself of the story. Definitely one of my top favorites by him.

TieDyeDude This may have been the first King book I read. My mom had the original 6 volumes (which I stole when I moved out and still have), which made it a little less intimidating. 3w
Victoriahoperose @TieDyeDude absolutely!! I completely agree. 3w
ElizaMarie One of my favorites! How was the audio? I had read it in the original monthly novellas. But.. this is one I want to revisit. 3w

Victoriahoperose @ElizaMarie absolutely 💯💯💯 recommend the audio. I felt like I was totally in it again. It was excellent. Highly recommend. 3w
RaeLovesToRead Haven't read the book, but there is a scene in the film that was so powerfully upsetting that I can't watch it again 3w
Victoriahoperose @RaeLovesToRead yes. That was hard and it‘s crazy because I was reading it and forgot about that part and then when it happened I felt so uneasy and upset by it, not gonna lie. It definitely got to me. Super disturbing. I didn‘t realize how much I forgot about until I was rereading it!! (edited) 3w

It‘s been almost a year since my Dad passed away and to celebrate his memory I am doing a giveaway!
This was my Dads favourite book. Growing up I remember seeing this book on my parent‘s bookshelf. I loved being able to discuss it with him when I finally read it. To enter just share a book that reminds you of anyone in the world, and why. #MissmyDad ♥️
I will gift 2 books from someone‘s TBR list using a number randomizer. Picked March 22nd.

Librarybelle What a lovely gesture! ❤️ 1mo
Rissreads Thankyou @Librarybelle It‘s the best way I could think of to honour his memory in a meaningful way to me. 1mo
Jas16 Such a beautiful thing to do. The Diary of Anne Frank makes me think of my grandmother. I still have her copy of the book and can recall her encouraging me to read me when I was young and delighting in discussing it with me. 1mo

quietlycuriouskate ❤️ I have my mum's old copy of Moonfleet. I never once saw her reading, but she said she'd liked this one as a kid. It's set in Dorset, where we were from. 1mo
BarbaraBB My dad had Papillon on his shelves too. He died 18 months ago. I now have his copy and will think of a post. Thank you for organizing ❤️💔 1mo
Chelsea.Poole This is a great way to honor him ♥️ 1mo
marleed Oh what a wonderful way to celebrate your dad. There are couple times when my dad let me select/have his BOTM selection. One was The complete works of Robert Frost and my copy has a very old stamp from BOTM on the end page. But the tagged was also my selection and we both read it. I was the last out of the nest and it became our tagline! I did come across an estate sale hardback copy a couple years back and snatched it up! 1mo
Reggie ❤️This is lovely. I will be thinking about a post. 1mo

SUPER excited about this one…. I‘m a huge follower of those who have been exonerated from being wrongfully imprisoned and here‘s yet another story told….

Reggie There was this story the other day, I wish I could remember his name. But he was from Idaho. He had been wrongly imprisoned for 20 years for the killing of a female friend. In fact he helps get a law passed in Idaho that for every year your falsley imprisoned you get a certain amount of money. He also helped pass the same law in Oregon. Sadly after so many years of being free he was found dead in a Las Vegas hotel. They said initially it was👇🏼 2mo
Reggie accidental but now they‘re thinking it was intentional. 2mo

The Mars Room: A Novel | Rachel Kushner
post image

I went to Barnes and Noble with my two youngest kids (9 and 21). I had a list of 8 books I wanted. They had two of them (Mars Room and The Naturals). The other three were impulse buys, and of course I couldn't leave without a new bookmark (or two). I could have spent all day, and a lot more money, but I was trying to show some restraint.

Raw and honest, this is an urbanized fictional perspective of an individual who grew up in the rough streets of Brooklyn, New York. Afro-Latina and trans protagonist Carlotta is released from prison on probation and tries to assimilate back into her community. However, her new identity ostracizes her from everyone as she attempts to navigate while dealing with themes of family, crime, gender, queerness and the threat of gentrification.

Zoe spends her summer interning at a bakery and longs to be a contestant on a kids baking show. In the midst of this, she receives a letter from her dad who's been incarcerated since she was little. How should she respond? Does she believe he's innocent? The author deftly deals with systemic racism without being on the nose. Zoe is a character you will want to cheer for!

I did a Stephen King per month last year (although I got delayed and finished up in January).
Favourite: The Green Mile. Probably followed by Different Seasons.
Least favourite: If it Bleeds. I didn't dislike it, but it was the weakest and least memorable of the bunch.

BarkingMadRead Green Mile is so so good! 3mo
Leniverse @BarkingMadRead Definitely! I'm not putting together a Best of 2023 list, but if I did Green Mile would be on it. 3mo
BarkingMadRead I originally read it when it was coming out serial style. So obnoxious having to wait to read each installment 🤣 3mo
See All 7 Comments
Leniverse @BarkingMadRead I actually paced myself, to get the serial experience 😂 I waited, not a full week because I was only supposed to spend a month on it, but a few days between each section. 3mo
BarkingMadRead That‘s amazing! 3mo
Leniverse @BarkingMadRead To be fair, I have seen the movie, years ago, so I pretty much knew what was coming. Otherwise I don't think I'd have managed to wait. 3mo
TrishB Good choices 👍🏻 3mo

Reading this confirms that prison, being imprisoned, is a separate world. Trying to relate to that experience is difficult, as much as the author is unflinching with the details. [If I never read anything ever again with this level of human excrement mentions I'll be happy]. In this separate world, how can I fairly judge any actions the author took? 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? There are passages that seem to suggest his experiences and maybe his base line beliefs/personality have made him too casual with language and perspectives that are offensive to me. Yet there are moments of enlightened thinking, there is the clear eyed acknowledgement of wrong doing without excuses. I did not expect the work to be more a reporting of various aspects of prisons and prison life, more than a study of the individual's interiority, as the author states in a last page addendum on chronology, "these pages are a distillation of what I had to learn about prisons, not an account of the travels of..." 3mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? The books are less an after thought than a result of situations outlined. Instead of reading choices defining his time, his time defined his reading. There is something savvy in looking for books that would better help him understand his conditions, but it means the reading list can be dry and grim a lot of the time. There's a bit of the lit snob in his upbringing/education as well. 3mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? I'm not sure I ever would have picked this up if I knew how it would handle the subject matter, but I can see the value in having this knowledge. It may be the American rather than the Canadian prison system discussed, but the broader implications function well as ammunition if I ever find myself okay enough with confrontation to get into discussions around prison reform/abolition. Even as the author regularly refers to international and historical prison conditions, and his own luck in not experiencing many of the worst things people hear about prison, as a method of acknowledging things could be worse, what's described is still by and large inhumane. NO ONE should have to exist like this. 3mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 ⚠️ SA, major violence, racism, ableism, homophobia, disordered eating, mental health concerns, suicide 3mo
Singout I was part of a Canadian prison visitation group for many years, but never really saw the “inside” or knew everything that was going on. It would be good to learn more, although, like you say, grim. 3mo
