Aunts Aren't Gentlemen
Aunts Aren't Gentlemen | P G Wodehouse
6 posts | 11 read | 3 to read
A tome of well-mannered high comedy, from the "unrivaled master of the comedy of manners" ("Entertainment Weekly") In "Aunts Aren't Gentlemen" Bertie Wooster withdraws to the village of Maiden Eggesford on doctor's orders to "sleep the sleep of the just and lead the quiet Martini-less life." Only the presence of the irrepressible Aunt Dahlia shatters the rustic peace. A classic-the last book written by Woodhouse featuring Bertie and Jeeves. With each volume edited and reset and printed on Scottish cream-wove, acid-free paper, sewn and bound in cloth, "Aunts Aren't Gentlemen" and the rest of the Wodehouse novels published by the Overlook Press are elegant additions to any Wodehouse fan's library.

Bertie‘s doctor orders him to the countryside for rest and fresh air. It is anything but restful, though, especially with Aunt Dahlia around. As usual, Jeeves solves it all.

Just finished this. Wodehouse's last finished novel (published as The Cat-Nappers in the United States) and I loved it. As delightful as any of the other Jeeves/Wooster stories, I'm racking my brain for another author who published something as consistently funny and good in their 90's.

“To a man who has seen as much of life as I have, there is always something sinister in a book bound in limp purple leather.” Okay, you have to imagine that in Bertie Wooster‘s voice.

In Bertie's world, #Aunts are at the top of the hierarchy. Aunt Agatha and Aunt Dahlia rule their respective "kingdoms," and poor Bertie is just a pawn in their schemes (Aunt Dahlia) and directives (Aunt Agatha).

In the "The Mating Season" Esmond Haddock, the squire, is governed by 5 resident aunts. Such a terrifying circumstance leads Bertie to introspect "It is not aunts that matter, but the courage which one brings to them"

mabell @CrowCAH @batsy @LeahBergen As a proud Auntie, hopefully I will be slightly easier on my nephew and niece than a Wodehouse aunt. 😆 6y

#funny #springflingreading Bertie and Jeeves have been funny friends since childhood. I can't resist funny P & P adaptations like Bridget Jones Diary and Austenland. The Rosie Project is a recent discovery thanks to my fellow Littens 😀

BookBabe @MrBook and I loved The Rosie Project! Especially on audio. 👍🏻 7y

Bertie and Jeeves at it again! Between Bertie's perpetual fate to be caught in the middle and Aunt Dahlia's penchant to put him there, there are plenty of sticky situations in this one. Jeeves comes to the rescue as usual! Not my favorite Bertie & Jeeves, but a good one nevertheless.
