Bonita Avenue: A Novel | Peter Buwalda
6 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
"Dazzling...Critics hailed Buwalda as 'The Dutch answer to Jonathan Franzen', but his brilliance is entirely unique."--The Times (UK) Siem Sigerius is a beloved, brilliant professor of mathematics with a promising future in politics. His familyincluding a loving wife, two gorgeous, intelligent stepdaughters and a successful future son-in-lawand carefully appointed home in the bucolic countryside complete the portrait of a comfortable, morally upright household. But there are elements of Siem's past that threaten to upend the peace and stability that he has achieved, and when he stumbles upon a deception thats painfully close to home, things begin to fall apart. A cataclysmic explosion in a fireworks factory, the advent of internet pornography, and the reappearances of a discarded, dangerous son all play a terrible role in the spectacular fragmentation of the Sigerius clan. A riveting portrait of a family in crisis and the ways that even the smallest twists of fate can forever change our lives, Bonita Avenue is an incendiary, unpredictable debut of relationships torn asunder by lies, and minds destroyed by madness. From the Hardcover edition.

I‘ve never heard of any of these books and don‘t know if they‘re good, but I can‘t resist $1 books. With most of these, I judged the book by its pretty cover.

BarbaraBB The tagged one is great, I enjoyed it a lot!! 6y
Kaylamburson I enjoyed The Gates of Evangeline! There's a bit of mystery and slight paranormality (which isn't usually for me) but I really enjoyed it! I never bothered with book 2 though. 6y
m.galehuxley @BarbaraBB @Kaylamburson Thank you both! I‘ll start with those two! 😊 6y
Kaylamburson I can't wait to hear what you think! 6y

#localauthor the author and main character comes from the city i grew up in. Better, the main character comes from the same neighbourhood. Although the author describes it as the dutch bronx (which is not true)

Finally sinking my teeth into a friend's recommendation. The translation is a little funny at times but mostly the prose is crackling and the characters enormously flawed and complex. Great fun all around! At this rate, I think I might be able to finish this one around three or four this afternoon. So far I have about 200 pages left! Luckily, my beloved makes excellent coffee, so I'm properly caffeinated ☕️ #24in48 #amreading 📚 @Litsy @24in48 🙃

Let the reading marathon commence! I don't expect to finish all of these, but it's always good to be prepared! The top two might come with me on my trip out West but I'm hoping to get through at least two out of the other five. I'm optimistic, since I've been training all week. Whoever thought up a reading marathon is an absolute genius. I can't imagine a better excuse to sit around and do nothing but read all day. Thanks, universe! #readharder 📚

Loved this book and really has an unsettling ending. Comparisons to a Dutch Franzen are apt in terms of weaving multiple family members' stories together.
