The Commitment
The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage, and My Family | Dan Savage
8 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
Dan Savages mother wants him to get married. His boyfriend, Terry, says no thanks because he doesnt want to act like a straight person. Their six-year-old son DJ says his two dads arent allowed to get married, but that hed like to come to the reception and eat cake. Throw into the mix Dans straight siblings, whose varied choices form a microcosm of how Americans are approaching marriage these days, and you get a rollicking family memoir that will have everyonegay or straight, right or left, single or marriedhowling with laughter and rethinking their notions of marriage and all it entails.

This American Life (my latest obsession) was my first introduction to Dan Savage, and I quickly purchased his book. Witty and intelligent, full of big feelings and hilarious surprises, comes Savage's debate and heartfelt ode to his family. I laughed out loud more than once and tucked away excerpts in my arsenal of retorts for the inevitable run-in with a disgruntled right-winger and/or religious troll ("powers of gay marriage activate!").

Over the past year I listened ALL 600+ episodes of the Savage Lovecast. I was going through withdrawals so I was happy to find one of Dan‘s books on #hoopla. He‘s such a smart and funny guy and it was interesting to get a peek into his marriage and family life.

One good thing about reading so much this year is that I‘ve let go of any guilt I have about DNF‘ing a book.
I gave this 10%, & that was more than enough. I really like Dan Savage, & enjoy his perspective when I get to read/watch him. But somehow this is just dull. Gotta let go of this one & move on.
