Mmmm...this book was delicious.
This is a surprisingly thoughtful tale masquerading as ‘just another cheap romance.‘ I loved how thoughtful our characters are, and how they interact with the world around them. The book felt authentic in a way that Victorian era historicals seldom do. One small quibble: the Yellow House plot line was resolved too quickly, and I suspect this is just to move the plot along. Still, I will likely read other books by this author.
I wanted to like this more - the banter between the hero and heroine is great but I have more issues with stories where things like the Kama sutra are used as a plot device every time. This one isn‘t the worst example, but it is a white Lady translating a “missing” portion of a Sanskrit text that she will then give to scholars. There is one Indian character and he has a name so it could be worse, but it still made me feel a bit... troubled.
Train home book this afternoon. I need some relaxing reading after a shift spent entirely on edge!
Finally started reading this tonight after it ended up in packing boxes for months during the renovations here. It‘s a stressful week ahead - I‘ve got to do an interview at work to try and keep hold of a temporary promotion I‘ve been doing for 8 months - so romance seems like a good idea to help relax. And if anyone has any tips to impress at interview let me know!
What with all the election excitement here, I forgot to post this #bookpost I got the other day! Lenora Bell's latest courtesy of the author herself. I'm looking forward to reading it! #romantsy
A very nice third entry in Leonora Bell's Disgraceful Dukes series. This one has a delicious twist on the old "gambled the wife/mistress/sister/daughter away" trope by having Hatherly's mad father gamble him away. Bell does a much better job in this book in balancing her light elements (translation, bedroom scenes) and the dark (inhuman conditions of period insane asylums). Bell now has three characters she could choose from for book 4....
I'm just seeing that scene before the party where he sings "tonight" in West Side Story. Do you ever read songs into books? #readaromance #regency #westsidestory #songs
I'm visiting my family this weekend and meeting my newest niece, Lucy, for the first time. In between all the sibling and nibling love, I am starting this ARC.

Alice dropped a grudging curtsy, hoping the marquess remembered the gory details of their last conversation.
“We‘ve met.” Hatherly‘s gaze icked over her dismissively.
She gave him her best kitten-with-sharp-claws smile. “So your father gambled you away, Lord Hatherly? What must the other gentlemen be say- ing? How very inconvenient to be society‘s latest drollery.”
