The Secret of Evil
The Secret of Evil | Roberto Bolao
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
A collection that gathers everything Bolano was working on before his untimely death. A North American journalist in Paris is woken at 4 a.m. by a mysterious caller with urgent information. For V. S. Naipaul the prevalence of sodomy in Argentina is a symptom of the nations political ills. Daniela de Montecristo (familiar to readers of Nazi Literature in the Americas and 2666) recounts the loss of her virginity. Arturo Belano returns to Mexico City and meets the last disciples of Ulises Lima, who play in a band called The Asshole of Morelos. Belanos son Gernimo disappears in Berlin during the Days of Chaos in 2005. Memories of a return to the native land. Argentine writers as gangsters. Zombie schlock as allegory... The various pieces in the posthumous Secret of Evil extend the intricate, single web that is the work of Roberto Bolano.

Pickpick

Outstanding, I love stuff like this. A composite of the works found on Bolaño‘s hard drive after he had passed. These are stories; the beginnings of novels; lectures; experiments.

A lot of the reviews I read say these are supplementary writings, for Bolaño completists. For me that‘s not the case, as I find it to be work in which he‘s pushing himself the most, constantly striving for something fresh and interesting to put on the page.

“and then I lay down and spent a while trying to decide whether to go into the sea or not, I could think of lots of reasons to go in but also some not to (the children playing at the water‘s edge, for example), until at last it was too late and I went home, and the next morning I bought some sunscreen and I went to the beach again, and around twelve I headed”

I had to chop this from a large sentence; I love this type of writing for some reason.

Apologies for spamming you #ScreamsByMail #HorrorPostalBookClub book tribe. Here is round two (and final one, promise!) of my book picks, including the two novels that seemed ok for most. Lemme know if there‘s anything here you‘d like me to avoid. Top picks? Special requests?

MStew 😍 6y
scripturient All fine with me. 6y
danibolahood I just finished the Alienist and I wouldn't call it horror... Actually I'd say the blurb calling it a thriller on the cover is a bold faced lie lol. Otherwise I'm good with all the others :) 6y

BeansPage How can I be a part of this book club please? 6y
GatheringBooks @TheReadingMermaid hello!! this was originally set up by the amazing @teebe - she organized this international #horrorpostalbookclub. we are two books away from finishing our first round, and we are currently working our way backwards. perhaps there will be another one soon? 😍🧚🏼‍♀️📚 6y
BeansPage @teebe please let me know how I can join 😃 6y
Reggie I‘m good with any of these. 6y
ephemeralwaltz Fine with all! Anything that neither of us have read is fine with me :)! 6y
ephemeralwaltz Maybe not Bolaño but just because it's translated and I'm lucky enough to be able to read him in Spanish! 6y
GatheringBooks @ephemeralwaltz hi clara! will it work if you read him in the original spanish version (do you have access to this particular title there?), and we read the english version, and still send the notebook along? 6y
ephemeralwaltz @GatheringBooks that would be awesome!! I could find a copy, no worries! 😘😘 No problem with me if that's the book you pick. You can still send it to me and I would send it along! 6y
ephemeralwaltz I'm jealous of the English cover 😍😍😍👏 6y
GatheringBooks @ephemeralwaltz you are the awesomest! leaning towards this one, as it‘s not too thick, and just snippets of narratives, i think. plus, i bought my copy of the book in madrid! 😍📚 6y
ephemeralwaltz @GatheringBooks oh that's lovely!! We should definitely give it a go 👏👏👏 6y
GatheringBooks @ephemeralwaltz let‘s wait and see what @BookishTrish and @kamoorephoto have to say. they may have an aversion towards bolaño ?????‍♀️? 6y
BookishTrish I‘m good for any of these and super interested in 6y
GatheringBooks @BookishTrish leaning towards this too as it has the highest goodreads ranking out of all titles. 6y
kamoorephoto I‘m starting ‘Halloween Tree‘ right now for a group read on Goodreads (Horror Aficionados, if you want to find the group!)...I think I want to say ‘Rot and Ruin‘ too! I have nearly picked it up a bunch of times because it‘s in the YA section and it looks like loads of fun. Bolaño kind of intimidates for some reason. 6y
GatheringBooks @TheReadingMermaid will def tag you the minute i see another call for a #horrorpostalbookclub :)🤞🏼📚🧚🏼‍♀️ 6y
BeansPage @GatheringBooks looks like I'm hosting one of my own 😉 #HorrorGoesPostalBookClub #HGPBC 6y
GatheringBooks @TheReadingMermaid i will join you then! awesome!!! 🧚🏼‍♀️😍📚 6y

My modest book loot (and notebooks too!) from Europe. Glad to be back home in the eternal summer of Singapore.
