@kimmypete1 A HUGE MONSTER THANK YOU for the #HHS swap package, especially for THREE included books on my wishlist, that‘s a real treat. I can‘t wait to read them!
And receiving candles (without me having to smell every single one in the store before buying one) makes me super happy. My SON will be very happy I ‘have‘ to share the Haribo. Seriously tho, the books especially made my day.

AND the sun came out in Seattle today 🎃

The cat and I have discovered the best way to watch horror movies this Halloween; with the little projector I just got.

It makes me not regret putting shelves up yet because I still have a blank wall. I just need a shelf for it (it‘s sitting on a pile of books on my book cart). AND a sound bar.

I just need to add up the points for the movies I‘ve been watching! And I‘m well into our buddy read for #TeamSlaughter #scarathlon2021

I‘ve been a BOTM member for years now but I help moderate BOTM: Mystery/Thriller Discussion Group over on Facebook. It‘s my month to host the discussion so I just posted a poll to help pick the book; there‘s never enough spooky stuff in October! These are just 2 in the poll.

I‘m late to the party with this one and I‘m really not sure how useful it is but what I‘ve done is cross out what I DO NOT LIKE. Way more informative, right?!
I really am not a fan of pumpkin OR pumpkin spice (actually any hot drinks, so hot chocolate also had to go).
But I really can‘t choose between so many of these: books and movies, cats and bats, Frankie and Dracula? Yep, like it all.

Fear Street Saga | R. L. Stine
post image

Has anyone else watched the #FearStreet trilogy on Netflix? What did you think?
I‘ll preface this by saying I‘ve not read R.L.Stine‘s Fear Street books that the trilogy (set in 1994, 1978, and 1666) is based on.
Regardless of its source material, it‘s exactly what you‘d expect from a Netflix event like this and despite reviews that make comparisons to the books (pointless to do) it‘s fun if you just roll with it. Beware terrible Irish accents 😉

Kimberlone I really enjoyed this series of anthology films, even as a person who doesn‘t engage much with horror films or fiction. I know I read a few Goosebumps books back in the 90s but I have no connection to the Fear Street series. Really appreciated the film and era references, and that it really commits to the violence/gore. 3mo
Oryx I liked it a lot - fun nostalgia (but terrible accents - bless them, they tried) 3mo
Reggie After the first movie, I felt guilty because as a queer person I feel like I should always root for other queer people. But after the first movie, if one of the lesbians had been killed I would have been ok with it. They just grated on my nerves. But by movies 2&3 I was back on team lesbian. 3mo

56 Days | Catherine Ryan Howard
post image
Pickpick

For the longest time I wondered what would be the first book I‘d read set against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, and THIS was it.
#56Days (Catherine Ryan Howard) is set in Dublin, Ireland, and while the pandemic isn‘t the FOCUS of the book, the situation where everyone is shut behind closed doors lends itself PERFECTLY to a thriller plot. A+ to Howard for recognizing that the lockdown would make great reading material. I read this FAST! 😷

Well, it was my #birthday so I thought I‘d treat myself to a heavy book full of Jim Morrison‘s journals, lyrics and poetic ramblings. Jim was a bit of an obsession of mine when I was a teenager, my mum surprised me with an 18th bday cake with a similar pic to this one on it! I often made the trip to Paris to Père Lachaise Cemetery to go ‘hang out‘ esp around my birthday as it‘s the same week as Morrison‘s death; many make the ‘pilgrimage‘ there ?

I just realized I have read 3 books in a row with beautifully colored covers and they couldn‘t have been more different.
One is a thriller with ‘Get Out‘ vibes set in the publishing industry, the next is a funny, smart how-to (and not-to) guide to marriage and running a tech startup by a Bangladeshi Brit. And the 3rd is an exciting MG fantasy about bird clans by a well-known author starting something new. Recommend ALL 👍🏼

Onceuponatime What is the title of the middle one? 5mo
kamoorephoto @Onceuponatime It was such a fun read! Whip smart and funny, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The lead character Asha builds an app that rivals the likes of Twitter and Facebook, and its algorithm creates rituals that create communities; she abandons her PhD for her new marriage and startup. It‘s about tech, feminism, connections, racism, courage, faith, romance, and planning for the apocalypse. Thoughtful and unique!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 5mo

The Tenant | Roland Topor, Francis K. Price
post image

I‘m a big fan of both ‘Repulsion‘ (1965) and definitely ‘Rosemary‘s Baby‘ (1968), but I had still not seen Roman Polanski‘s ‘The Tenant‘. This film is part of a loose trilogy he made about the ‘horrors‘ faced by apartment and city dwellers. This one has Polanski in the lead role, stars Isabelle Adjani, and has a feeling of paranoia that is stifling.
It‘s been hard to shake this one since seeing it.

Finally let my 12-year old watch this with me, and I‘d forgotten just how good it is. One of most amazing things about this movie is how the story is told with the action and these actors WITHOUT the need for dialogue. When you think about what is needed to move a story along and you‘re able to pay attention to every little thing in this film, it‘s even better the 2nd time (even when you know what‘s coming).

I‘m not the only one who‘s seen this recently but I HAVE to post about The Invisible Man starring the amazing Elisabeth Moss.
It doesn‘t resemble the book by H.G.Wells or the original film but it‘s intense, frightening, and it kept me gripped all the way through. It‘s beautiful filmmaking with an ugly storyline of abuse at the center; my heart ached for CeCe. I loved the horror and I loved the ending.

Just about every frame of this iconic film is a visual masterpiece and this is one of Stanley Kubrick‘s most well-known movies. Stephen King was apparently disappointed with the finished product, said it lacked substance, and didn‘t like Nicholson‘s performance. Please don‘t argue with me on this: Psycho is one of the best movies ever made. Not just one of the best horror movies, unless you want to argue it‘s a psychological thriller or a mystery.
This scene alone changed the course of movie-making, and Hitchcock took a big gamble with technique, a new genre, and he shocked movie-goers the world over.

This kept me glued to the page all the way through. What makes it a riveting novel is having such an unreliable narrator; Sean, previously institutionalized and diagnosed with schizophrenia, is ravaged with violent thoughts, but he‘s constantly wrestling with his desire to get better. 1 Carve a Jack-o-lantern
2 Halloween socks, women‘s 7 (I tend to be a ‘sock-shunner‘ as it‘s hard for me to go back to socks after summer) but I love ‘reading‘ socks and cool designs
3 Depends on the day
4 I enjoy bath bombs but I go through tons of candles ie bookish scents, fig, tuberose, lavender, rose, bergamot, basil, dragon‘s blood, patchouli, sandalwood
5 Coffin
6 Fab costume
7 Thriller (I love the 80‘s!)

kamoorephoto *Note on the candles: preferably nothing too sweet or fruity (these give me headaches) or candles that burn horribly smokey (cheaper ones set off my smoke alarm; found out the hard way 😹) 1y

The #scarathlon gave me lots of excuses to indulge in lots of horror, including lots of graphic novels.
I meant to get to more of my TBR but considering my world is still in flux (and had to watch horror movies), I did ok.
13 books
2 book signings
1 lease signing
1 vet visit
1 cat calendar photo session
2 blog tour posts
Countless arguments with my middle schooler
75 pieces Halloween candy

Doing my #scarathlon wrap-up although I fully intend to keep watching scary movies all day (I‘m watching Bird Box right now) and night and to keep reading too...
1 Lucky 13
2 Bird Box, Ninth House
3 Rosemary‘s Baby (always), Us, Halloween
4 Jar Of Fears, and the A-Z game
5 My son wants both me and his dad to take him trick-or-treating as usual but we are split up now sooo I still don‘t know what‘s happening 🤔

kamoorephoto Okay, the movie for Bird Box wasn‘t bad but what‘s up with SO many people not knowing it was a book? 🤨 Looking forward to reading 2y

Finally watched the (apparent) official sequel that comes 40 years after the first Halloween (1978), and I think it‘s not bad. It was jarring seeing Jamie Lee Curtis hiding in the woods, with her grey hair and stash of guns too.
BUT if we are to believe there have been no sequels and films in between, it‘s weird. That said, this film has production value that surpasses the others in spades though, and you can‘t turn away.

Tales from the Darkside | Tom Allen, Mitchell Galin

This is really like a collection of short stories pulled together by one story, and they all are little cheesy, a bit like ‘Tales from the Crypt.‘
A lot of recognizable faces on here like Debbie Harry and Christian Slater, plus the amazing Steve Buscemi and Julianne Moore (her big screen debut).
Watch it for some ‘light‘ 90‘s horror and to see the early careers of a few of Hollywood‘s brightest stars.

Gissy I also did it. I will be checking your tbr in Litzy. Sometimes I don't know what to do with books I read but I don't want to keep and we don't have here places to trade books or sell. If you don't mind I can send you some of these books if they are in your tbr. 2y

For most of this, I seriously have no idea what was going on, it was so disjointed and the artwork didn‘t help either. Even the characters were confused.
Supposedly it was about ‘wytches‘, and this family who had moved to a new town after their daughter had been bullied....
Talk about a mess.

Where the Wild Things Are | Maurice Sendak
post image

Posting a photo of Roman from a Halloween past and probably my favorite costume THAT I MADE; no costume of Max from ‘Where The Wild Things Are‘ existed so I made the best costume in the land that year.

*I honestly think it‘s worth more than 25 points because this represents probably one of the last happy times together as a family before me and his dad split. And that‘s an awesome pumpkin I carved.

Watched this little gem ‘Alice, Sweet Alice‘ which has Brooke Shields in her debut role as Karen, sister to the troubled Alice. Shields doesn‘t last long in this 1976 slasher-thriller; she is strangled at her First Communion.
Then lots of other people get bumped off by the same girl running around in a yellow raincoat and a creepy mask.
And there‘s the neighbor sitting around in his gross undies feeding kittens.

Another one in this fun series about this zombie girl and her pals, one who is a ghost and the other who is a were-terrier, and it‘s set in Eugene, OR.
Gwen is now developing feelings for a monster-hunter and there‘s a gang of female vampires hanging out in the same neck of the woods. Lots of good stuff.

Bird Box: A Novel | Josh Malerman
post image
Pickpick

Finally read it, and BEFORE seeing the movie. I‘ve had this a while, had it signed by Josh Malerman and worked hard to not even watch trailers to not have images of the adaptation so I could distance myself from being affected by them (it was hard).

Malerman does a great job of building tension, and creates fear when the reasons aren‘t even clear. Fear of the unknown is pretty terrifying.

#wondrouswednesday - saw this and I figured I‘d do it!
1 The original Halloween is a classic Halloween flick, but I always watch Rosemary‘s Baby, and some Krueger and Voorhes in October
2 I do cat photography when I can; best part is when my rescue photos directly save cats‘ lives
3 I loved being continuity/script supervisor on movies/video/TV; every day was different

This was a really fun graphic novel and I‘ll probably read more of them; I liked the artwork and concepts, and it was funny!! Why haven‘t I read it before?
There were all sorts of monsters (including both zombies and vampires plus ghosts). And it‘s set in the PNW. Bonus points from me for that.

This book is sensational. Leigh Bardugo may well be known as a YA fantasy author but wow, she knows how to write an adult horror-thriller and I‘m so glad that this is where her writing has led her.
It‘s a murder-mystery set at Yale: secret societies practicing magic, disparities in class and wealth, rape, addiction, cults, ghosts, and murder are all within these pages. And lots of Latin. It blew me away.

#scarathlon

kamoorephoto @Clwojick Trying to figure out points still... 1 Black cover 1 Matte Cover (yes except for the title and snake, it is) 1 Over 200 pages 1 Character dies (several) 1 Part of a series 1 That scares you (some of this was totally horrifying) 1 Number in the title (Ninth) 1 About Halloween (can it count when there was a portion?) 2 Subject theme (this was definitely murder mystery-thriller) 1 post 1 book read = 12? (edited) 2y
kamoorephoto I am going to reiterate for everyone: THIS IS NOT YA!!! 2y
Reviewsbylola Wow, ok. I guess I should stack this one! 2y

kamoorephoto @Reviewsbylola You should...SO GOOD. I went to the book signing for it last week where Leigh spoke about the book which made this even better for me. Seems like this is the book she has been wanting to write for a while. 2y
Clwojick SO with the point breakdown, you get 5 points if a portion of it was related to or set on Halloween night. 1 point for the participation post. As for the Scavenger Hunt Prompts, you only get 1 point per prompt the first time you check it off... so if you've read 6 books where somone dies, you only get the point the first time. So... if this is the first time you've used these prompts then you're total would be 14 😆 2y
kamoorephoto @clwojick Okay, so I still think it‘s 12 then, considering the prompts I‘ve used before, and with Halloween being 5 👍🏼 2y

Saw #Goosebumps 2 with Roman last night. It didn‘t get as good reviews as the first one but I actually laughed my arse off and loved the creepy parts (the talking wooden puppet Slappy creeped Roman out so much). Everything coming to life at the store was great. Those huge gummy bears! 😱

This releases TODAY!
If you are a fan of the board game CLUE (or the excellent movie), this is a fun modern reimagining of the concept. YA murder-mystery set in an elite prep school in Maine, it has all the elements you expect (but no Tim Curry). Not perfect but it‘s a pick.
