Okay, who bought books on #IndependentBookstoreDay?
My plan had been to stay home that day but this was me getting coffee ‘LOOKING‘ at books. I did pretty well.

I‘m so behind on reviews, behind on lists, decision-making, everything. I‘ve been reading quite a bit, considering an online course if I can get financial aid (my brain is turning to mush).

Oh and I have to decide on meniscus repair surgery for my left knee🤦🏻‍♀️

My #JoyousJanuary #Readathon starts with some simple goals: get stuff read that I PLANNED on and not get diverted just yet 😹
A Flicker in The Dark is taking a while because I keep getting distracted by life but a BOTM FB is doing a discussion. I received 10 copies of Her Honor for my local book club from #LittleFreeLibrary so will read that too. And I want to finish Maid before I finish the show!
I also want to set my TBRs and yearly goals 😉

Andrew65 Some good choices. Good luck 😊👍 2y

THANK YOU to my #CreepyChristmasSwap match @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego 🖤
My package made its second trip out of Canada and got to me in #Seattle today (by way of San Francisco for some strange reason..who comes up with these mail routes?).
It was sad to tear through the cute wrapping paper, but the goodies are fabulous; I‘m especially excited for the tagged book and smelly bath bomb.
Happy New Year to you and thank you Danielle 😘

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego It took the extra long route, but hopefully it was worth the wait. 🎅🏼☠️🖤 2y
TheRiehlDeal Mail routes… tell me about it! 🙄 It seems like these past few years they‘ve been out of whack. Here in NY, sometimes when I order something, the tracking will say it‘s near Syracuse, then later it‘ll be out in Rochester, and then it‘ll come back to Syracuse. Like that‘s a lot of wasted gas for the delivery trucks. 2y

It might not be the cheeriest of books (documents all the news stories and craziness of the year that was 2020) but it recently caught my eye and I‘m really glad you got this one for me @TiminCalifornia 🙌🏼
It might be the only book I get to open this holiday season (my #creepychristmasswap gift is delayed) so it‘s all the more special 😉📚🎄
Hope you have a fabulous holiday on your end!

Some kind person put this in the #LittleFreeLibrary right in front of my building.
I especially consider it a score because most of the books put in there are for kids (there‘s a childcare next door, and it‘s a children‘s reading org that sponsors it).
And finally the door on the LFL got fixed; it recently blew off when we had particularly bad weather…

marleed I put a couple holiday books in a LFL this week. I sure hope they made someone happy! 2y

All weekend I helped with the search effort to get this tiny foster pup back (#Seattle); she managed to back out of her collar. It was lucky she had a slip lead on because it got caught on a branch.
For 2 days of a search crew posting hundreds of posters and canvassing a several mile area, we finally had a sighting on a Ring video camera posted on social media. It was nearly 66.5 hrs that she was gone!
Such relief we found her! #pets

You‘re welcome, horror movie fans.
I put together a list of #CreepyChristmas movies (they do range in their Rotten Tomato squelchiness) for your holiday-horror-movie-watching pleasure.
Which can you recommend? 🔪🎄🪓

Bookworm54 I‘m watching Elves on Netflix (Danish series) which would also fit the creepy Christmas theme :) 2y

Reggie Better Watch Out. Not gonna say anything else cause I don‘t want to spoil it but holy wow that movie. 2y
BookwormAHN Anna and The Apocalypse is the best/saddest teenage zombie movie, the original Black Christmas is the best, Rare Exports is insane and fantastic, A Christmas Horror Story is a favorite of mine and Krampus is just awesome 🖤 2y
wanderinglynn Thanks for the tag. But no horror movies for me. I like HEA. 😉 2y
NikkiM5 I just watched the 1970s version of Black Christmas 2y
kamoorephoto The original Black Christmas is great, AGREED 👍🏼 @BookwormAHN @NikkiM5 …I must watch Better Watch Out and Krampus next!! @Reggie (edited) 2y
Bookzombie The original Black Christmas is the best, but I also love the crappiness of the 2006 version. I watch it while I put up my tree every year. I also love Anna and the Apocalypse, but I love a musical. @Reggie Every year I say I‘m going to watch Better Watch Out, so this year I really will. 2y
Reggie @Bookzombie I saw none of it coming of what happens in there. Hope you like it! 2y
MaleficentBookDragon Better Watch Out 👍 👍 👍
I've seen all 3 versions of Black Christmas. They vary in quality but I love bad (to a degree) horror movies.
Anna and the Apocalypse GREAT! And a little sad.
Gremlins - classic.
Jack Frost is bad, but in a funny good way.
💝Love Krampus with Toni Collette. I don't know about the others.
Both Silent Night Deadly Nights are really bad, and not in a good way.
I want to see All The Creatures Were Stirring this year.
2y
kamoorephoto @MaleficentBookDragon Okay tonight, I HAVE to get another one watched!!! My son said he's too scared to watch Krampus with me though 😂 2y
witchyreader13 Jack Frost is insanely ridiculous B-movie fare, and absolutely one of my favorites. There's also a sequel, if you can find it, called Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman. I love cheezy horror flix. Btw, @kamoorephoto , I received the package you sent for #creepychristmas. Thank you so much! ☠ 😍 2y
kamoorephoto @witchyreader13 I can‘t wait for you to open your box, I really can‘t!!!! 🙀 I‘m going to have to watch Jack Frost and a few others this week…my boy won‘t watch these with me!!! (edited) 2y

I‘ve not posted for a bit altho I‘ve been on here commenting/browsing; I‘ve been struggling lately with SAD and MS symptoms. Fatigue and pain are even harder for me when it gets cold, and the doldrums hit HARD. I actually do know all the things I need to do: get outside and get active (thank goodness I got a dog again), connecting, etc.
Tell me what makes you happy when it‘s grey and cold outside! #creepychristmas #JolabokaflodSwap #winter

alisiakae Aromatherapy with essential oils and a diffuser, a regular sleep routine. Do you take Vitamin D? 2y
Gissy So happy that you are back and you are managing things!😘🥰❤️❤️❤️
When I‘m sad or overwhelmed, I need a space from people/noises to process what is happening, to think how can I manage it. I need silence, be with myself. Then I need to walk outside, again, alone. After that space with myself, maybe I consult/talk with a friend. The beach, trees, nature, can calm me tremendously. If the situation is so difficult, I need to do exercises like run.
2y
Gissy I also, use candles in the house, some Celtic/new age soft music, a cup of tea and read when I calmed a little bit. But all these activities, I need to do it by myself at the beginning, trying to control those obsessive thoughts and all these have worked for me🤗
@Chrissyreadit @mabell @Avanders what do you do?
(edited) 2y
FantasyChick Oh I know all too well about this one. When I'm feeling down and dreary I need to be by myself to work through it. A nice bath as hot as my body will allow, loaded with some calming Epsom salts and nice relaxing bubbles and a bath bomb. Slap on a rejuvenating face mask and some dim lighting. Rather than read on these days I'll throw on some cheesy show I've seen a million times and just let the world slip away. 2y
FantasyChick You wouldn't believe how much something so simple can breathe new life into you! Thanks for including me @bookishtrish 😘 How do you guys deal @debbiegrillo @MoonWitch94 @ShelleyBooksie ? 2y
MoonWitch94 @FantasyChick Thanks for thinking of me ☺️ I suggested a cozy beverage & blanket with good music. Also, when the sun does come out, I try to stand in the sunshine for a few minutes so my body gets some natural Vitamin D. So important for combating SAD. 2y
FantasyChick @MoonWitch94 That'll teach me to read the comments before tagging 🤣🤣 Great suggestion! 2y
DebbieGrillo Honestly, I've been treating myself to some THC gummies. Not lately because I've got some health stuff going on. Didn't try the stuff until I was well into my 40s. No regrets. Add some good music and snacks and life is grand! 2y
kamoorephoto @4thhouseontheleft You know, I really should try some high dose Vitamin D, even though I do get outside for dog walks multiple times a day, it‘s not exactly sunny out right now (#Seattle) 🌧 @Gissy Candles DO make me happy; maybe I need to stop trying to ‘save‘ them and just burn them! @DebbieGrillo I‘ve been super cautious about THC because of anxiety issues but I may try some CBD?? 2y
kamoorephoto **Also, stuff with my son (he just turned 14 😩) has been continuously stressful (trying to police his screen use, get schoolwork done, get therapy, deal with hormones, etc) and I‘m doing everything I can for that, and I‘m burnt out after two years of this pandemic BS, just me and him at home. Now he doesn‘t even want to go to his dad‘s because of his older 1/2 brother. I also tend to feel guilty when I take a break. 2y
wanderinglynn It is hard when it‘s cold and grey outside. I exercise—yoga especially helps center me. I try to eat better, lots of fruits & veg. A good friend of mine does light therapy & says that helps. And just talking to someone and making sure I‘m not isolating myself. 2y
kamoorephoto @FantasyChick Favorite cheesy shows right now???! 2y
marleed When I‘m overwhelmed or struck inability to address things in my life, I create a personal Kanban chart. I tend to create them for weekends or for work days. Every little thing gets it‘s own sticky - prepping dinner, grocery store, clean off nightstand, read for an hour (I might have 5 stickies of this one!), walk 5 miles (3 stickies), meditate, take a bubble bath, text my sister, pay bills, mail birthday card, watch a movie with my son... ↓ 2y
marleed I have a chart with 3 columns:
1. To do (where all the stickies start).
2. In Progress (where only 3-5 stickies can reside)
3. Finished (where I want every sticky to land at the end of my timeframe).
It‘s a game, but it really helps me to visually move those stickies. I created them professionally for years before I started to use them in my personal life.
2y
alisiakae @kamoorephoto I have a just turned 14yo daughter and screen time, extracurriculars, hormones, therapy are all burning me out too. We just went to her teacher‘s funeral today too, I am going to need my own therapy session after this week carrying all of the emotional luggage. Hang in there 💞 2y
kamoorephoto @marleed In my head, and when I‘m emotionally 100%, I can do this kind of planning. Sounds so good. The best I can do right now is get out my to-do list in one fell swoop onto paper so I can check things off. I used to do some pretty good journaling before I left R‘s dad and be on my own, but I don‘t have the energy for that (or the pretty). @4thhouseontheleft ahh so you understand. I can‘t even get R to do extracurriculars since pandemic 😐 2y
marleed @kamoorephoto I sure hop you receive some tips that work for you now. In the meantime, I hope you feel some positive energy for a good day sent your way from me in Kansas City! 2y
marleed @4thhouseontheleft Oh I‘m so sorry about the death of your daughter‘s teacher. That has to be hard. Sometimes days are just a lot. 2y
FantasyChick I'm a big fan of the reality TV. It's always so bad and corny that I can just leave it on and binge lol. Love is Blind, The Circle, Selling Sunset, Too Hot to Handle, Sister Wives and my all time favourite feel good....90 Day Fiance! Bad, cheesy, cringey TV makes my day 2y
ShelleyBooksie On nights when I'm low I enjoy soft jammies and warm covers while listening to a podcast or audiobook - one that does not require a lot of attention that I can drift off too. I also love a warm shower with some nice lotion after. ♡♡ I also love TV when I need to turn out. Cooking shows- great Canadian baker, Nailed it are faves. 2y
Andrea4 I take higher doses of vit D. I have done sun tanning in a bed before in worse winters. Lots of warmth and coziness around me. Watching shows that I know can let me cry "with a reason" if I feel I need that. Making things. Anything really. Just creation. Playing with my plants and dirt (tricking myself to think I'm outside lol). If there are sunny days you best best I'm sticking myself in the middle of a sunbeam!! 2y
Andrea4 Exercise of course is great but some kind that makes me feel happy, usually intense cardio for me and sometimes that is me dancing around like a maniac (this looks mostly like jumping and flailing of arms) to really loud music! I asked for a rebounding trampoline for xmas and can't wait to literally bounce around!!! Like tee I double G errrrr 🐅 2y
Chrissyreadit I use a lot of what has been suggested, but most of all love a hot bath with Epsom Salts, I light candles, and in comfy pajamas under a cozy blanket put on Psych or a Jane Austen movie, and read a cozy mystery simultaneously- cause I know them by heart, and sometimes have popcorn. Also, I have an almost 18 year old and 19 year old and can honestly say the teen years are the most challenging but they grow out of it eventually ❤️- 2y
Chrissyreadit And def get your vit D checked. You may need prescription strength. I hear a lot of good things about the light therapy. Finally- I use my litsy friends for funny memes- I love seeing all the stuff posted in the Winter Games (even though I don‘t play) 2y
kamoorephoto @Andrea4 Do you get a vitamin D shot? 2y
Andrea4 @kamoorephoto no, I just use drops. Generally in summer 2000/day (so for most brands this is two drops) and in winter I'll go to 3000/day. Last time I was tested my naturopath was pleasantly surprised by my Vit D number, saying it was one of the best she's seen and to keep going with that. I get the drops because most are already emulsified so you don't have to worry about taking with a fat. 2y
MaleficentBookDragon I get it. I hope all this comments cheer you up a bit. Books and chocolate are nice and cozy.
I'm a strange one, I love it when it is cold and gray out (or rainy) because then I just snuggle under a blanket on my couch with a hot drink and furry cuddle bunny (cats or #manpanion? it depends). 😂
And I don't have to feel guilty about not wanting to go outside.
2y
kamoorephoto @MaleficentBookDragon Oh believe me, I live in Seattle so I‘m good with cold and espec. gray; it makes me feel much better than overly hot. Rain is also just fine (altho the dog complains sometimes); temperature extremes are really hard for me tho, because I have MS. Snuggle companions are a white dog and a white cat who tend to leave fur everywhere. Been struggling with so much pain and fatigue lately so that sucks. Talking on here helps ☺️ 2y
BiblioLitten This post helped. Winters are not kind to my skin or my mood and I‘m always looking for things to make it better. 2y
kamoorephoto @BiblioLitten Oh god yes, my skin is crap in the winter even though I‘m always moisturizing and drinking water. These new added stomach issues now make eating unpleasant 😩 Today I found out my aunt back in England suddenly has died and neither my passport or green card are up to date for travel. Feeling seriously PISSY TONIGHT!!!! Movie + book are very necessary. I‘m overwhelmed. 2y
BiblioLitten I‘m so sorry to hear about your aunt. I hope you find peace. 💐 Hugs 💕 2y

The cat and I have discovered the best way to watch horror movies this Halloween; with the little projector I just got.

It makes me not regret putting shelves up yet because I still have a blank wall. I just need a shelf for it (it‘s sitting on a pile of books on my book cart). AND a sound bar.

I just need to add up the points for the movies I‘ve been watching! And I‘m well into our buddy read for #TeamSlaughter #scarathlon2021

Fear Street Saga | R. L. Stine
post image

Has anyone else watched the #FearStreet trilogy on Netflix? What did you think?
I‘ll preface this by saying I‘ve not read R.L.Stine‘s Fear Street books that the trilogy (set in 1994, 1978, and 1666) is based on.
Regardless of its source material, it‘s exactly what you‘d expect from a Netflix event like this and despite reviews that make comparisons to the books (pointless to do) it‘s fun if you just roll with it. Beware terrible Irish accents 😉

Kimberlone I really enjoyed this series of anthology films, even as a person who doesn‘t engage much with horror films or fiction. I know I read a few Goosebumps books back in the 90s but I have no connection to the Fear Street series. Really appreciated the film and era references, and that it really commits to the violence/gore. 3y
Oryx I liked it a lot - fun nostalgia (but terrible accents - bless them, they tried) 3y
Reggie After the first movie, I felt guilty because as a queer person I feel like I should always root for other queer people. But after the first movie, if one of the lesbians had been killed I would have been ok with it. They just grated on my nerves. But by movies 2&3 I was back on team lesbian. 3y

56 Days | Catherine Ryan Howard

Pickpick

For the longest time I wondered what would be the first book I‘d read set against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, and THIS was it.
#56Days (Catherine Ryan Howard) is set in Dublin, Ireland, and while the pandemic isn‘t the FOCUS of the book, the situation where everyone is shut behind closed doors lends itself PERFECTLY to a thriller plot. A+ to Howard for recognizing that the lockdown would make great reading material. I read this FAST! 😷

Well, it was my #birthday so I thought I‘d treat myself to a heavy book full of Jim Morrison‘s journals, lyrics and poetic ramblings. Jim was a bit of an obsession of mine when I was a teenager, my mum surprised me with an 18th bday cake with a similar pic to this one on it! I often made the trip to Paris to Père Lachaise Cemetery to go ‘hang out‘ esp around my birthday as it‘s the same week as Morrison‘s death; many make the ‘pilgrimage‘ there ?

I just realized I have read 3 books in a row with beautifully colored covers and they couldn‘t have been more different.
One is a thriller with ‘Get Out‘ vibes set in the publishing industry, the next is a funny, smart how-to (and not-to) guide to marriage and running a tech startup by a Bangladeshi Brit. And the 3rd is an exciting MG fantasy about bird clans by a well-known author starting something new. Recommend ALL 👍🏼

Onceuponatime What is the title of the middle one? 3y
kamoorephoto @Onceuponatime It was such a fun read! Whip smart and funny, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The lead character Asha builds an app that rivals the likes of Twitter and Facebook, and its algorithm creates rituals that create communities; she abandons her PhD for her new marriage and startup. It‘s about tech, feminism, connections, racism, courage, faith, romance, and planning for the apocalypse. Thoughtful and unique!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 3y

ANYWAY, this book was a LOT of sun-and-booze-soaked fun so I highly recommend it for a start of summer read.
A great escapist read. LOVED it 💗🍸🏄🏼‍♀️🌴#summer #MalibuRising

Thank you so so much @Meaw_catlady 🥰
I opened up my box and I loved the wrapping but I was THRILLED that inside I found some of my most anticipated books. I REALLY can‘t wait to read the tagged book most of all. I love the book sleeve (what a surprise!), the retro bookmarks, the chocolate...oh, and my son is trying to claim the candy and the bath bomb. I may have to hide that. Thanks for putting so much thought into my box. I want to hug you! 🖤

Meaw_catlady It warms my heart to hear that!!!!!!!! It was so fun getting all the items together for you!!!!!! Enjoy!!! Blessed Samhain!!! The book sleeve is from one of my fave Etsy shops!!! And the bookmarks are from the lovely @That-Bookish-Hiker ‘s Etsy shop!! 3y

The Tenant | Roland Topor, Francis K. Price
post image

I‘m a big fan of both ‘Repulsion‘ (1965) and definitely ‘Rosemary‘s Baby‘ (1968), but I had still not seen Roman Polanski‘s ‘The Tenant‘. This film is part of a loose trilogy he made about the ‘horrors‘ faced by apartment and city dwellers. This one has Polanski in the lead role, stars Isabelle Adjani, and has a feeling of paranoia that is stifling.
It‘s been hard to shake this one since seeing it.

Finally let my 12-year old watch this with me, and I‘d forgotten just how good it is. One of most amazing things about this movie is how the story is told with the action and these actors WITHOUT the need for dialogue. When you think about what is needed to move a story along and you‘re able to pay attention to every little thing in this film, it‘s even better the 2nd time (even when you know what‘s coming).

I‘m SO excited!! I just mailed out THE BEST BLOODY #HauntedHallowSwap box today!!
It‘s on its way from here in Seattle to someone lucky somewhere far from me on the East Coast, and apparently it should get there Tuesday. I sent a mountain of books (maybe!) and so many goodies (or did I?!)...or was is it all a trick? 😏
I hope it will make someone very happy because I nearly kept it all myself (my son fought me for some of it).

I‘m not the only one who‘s seen this recently but I HAVE to post about The Invisible Man starring the amazing Elisabeth Moss.
It doesn‘t resemble the book by H.G.Wells or the original film but it‘s intense, frightening, and it kept me gripped all the way through. It‘s beautiful filmmaking with an ugly storyline of abuse at the center; my heart ached for CeCe. I loved the horror and I loved the ending.

Just about every frame of this iconic film is a visual masterpiece and this is one of Stanley Kubrick‘s most well-known movies. Stephen King was apparently disappointed with the finished product, said it lacked substance, and didn‘t like Nicholson‘s performance. Kubrick was a demanding director - he got into the Guinness Book of Records making Wendy do the baseball bat swinging shot a whopping 127 times!

Please don‘t argue with me on this: Psycho is one of the best movies ever made. Not just one of the best horror movies, unless you want to argue it‘s a psychological thriller or a mystery.
This scene alone changed the course of movie-making, and Hitchcock took a big gamble with technique, a new genre, and he shocked movie-goers the world over.
I can‘t help but watch it every October (sometimes twice).

Hunting Annabelle | Wendy Heard
post image
Pickpick

This kept me glued to the page all the way through. What makes it a riveting novel is having such an unreliable narrator; Sean, previously institutionalized and diagnosed with schizophrenia, is ravaged with violent thoughts, but he‘s constantly wrestling with his desire to get better. Things become very complicated when he meets Annabelle. This will take you on a wild ride.

More #HauntedHollowSwap #HHS fun!

1 Carve a Jack-o-lantern
2 Halloween socks, women‘s 7 (I tend to be a ‘sock-shunner‘ as it‘s hard for me to go back to socks after summer) but I love ‘reading‘ socks and cool designs
3 Depends on the day
4 I enjoy bath bombs but I go through tons of candles ie bookish scents, fig, tuberose, lavender, rose, bergamot, basil, dragon‘s blood, patchouli, sandalwood
5 Coffin
6 Fab costume
7 Thriller (I love the 80‘s!)

kamoorephoto *Note on the candles: preferably nothing too sweet or fruity (these give me headaches) or candles that burn horribly smokey (cheaper ones set off my smoke alarm; found out the hard way 😹) 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I sympathize with your cheap candle incident. Candles are now one of the few things I‘ve found I have to be a bit stuck-up about. 😅 4y
wanderinglynn Yes, quality candles are a must. 👍🏻 🎃🖤🧡☠️ 4y
kamoorephoto @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @wanderinglynn Yaaassss!!! I love splurging on candles. Quality candles simply last longer (so your money actually goes further), and the scents aren‘t usually derived from artificial sources (giving headaches). They also burn cleaner. I think it‘s totally okay for people to be candle snobs. Candles make me happy 😬🕯 4y

2 Pumpkin spice - NO
3 I always end up as a witch but my fave costume was bloody zombie cheerleader
4 I can‘t say no to treats/candy (but I like ‘tricks‘ in movies)
5 Only a little bit superstitious
6 I always have a cat by my own side so cats are a given (but I love all the bats, rats, etc)
7 Headless Horseman
8 Haunted House
9 Apple Pie
10 I‘m game for either 😱

kamoorephoto **Watching all my favorite horror movies at Halloween is one of my favorite things - I should probably start making a list now... 4y

Right now my heart is breaking.
It‘s been just 6 weeks since my kitty passed away but now my dog Apollo, who‘s been with me his whole life, is ready to pass on and join her. He has a mass on his chest, he keeps having accidents, he is weak and confused.
I just can‘t afford to help him die with dignity because I‘m in such a hard spot. Vet fees are exorbitant and there‘s no such thing as a sliding scale with them.
I hate this.
