It was a fun reading month (can it always be October?)!
The #scarathlon gave me lots of excuses to indulge in lots of horror, including lots of graphic novels.
I meant to get to more of my TBR but considering my world is still in flux (and had to watch horror movies), I did ok.
13 books
2 book signings
1 lease signing
1 vet visit
1 cat calendar photo session
2 blog tour posts
Countless arguments with my middle schooler
75 pieces Halloween candy

Doing my #scarathlon wrap-up although I fully intend to keep watching scary movies all day (I‘m watching Bird Box right now) and night and to keep reading too...
1 Lucky 13
2 Bird Box, Ninth House
3 Rosemary‘s Baby (always), Us, Halloween
4 Jar Of Fears, and the A-Z game
5 My son wants both me and his dad to take him trick-or-treating as usual but we are split up now sooo I still don‘t know what‘s happening 🤔

#TeamSlaughter +50

kamoorephoto Okay, the movie for Bird Box wasn‘t bad but what‘s up with SO many people not knowing it was a book? 🤨 Looking forward to reading 3w

Finally watched the (apparent) official sequel that comes 40 years after the first Halloween (1978), and I think it‘s not bad. It was jarring seeing Jamie Lee Curtis hiding in the woods, with her grey hair and stash of guns too.
BUT if we are to believe there have been no sequels and films in between, it‘s weird. That said, this film has production value that surpasses the others in spades though, and you can‘t turn away.

This is really like a collection of short stories pulled together by one story, and they all are little cheesy, a bit like ‘Tales from the Crypt.‘
A lot of recognizable faces on here like Debbie Harry and Christian Slater, plus the amazing Steve Buscemi and Julianne Moore (her big screen debut).
Watch it for some ‘light‘ 90‘s horror and to see the early careers of a few of Hollywood‘s brightest stars.

For most of this, I seriously have no idea what was going on, it was so disjointed and the artwork didn‘t help either. Even the characters were confused.
Supposedly it was about ‘wytches‘, and this family who had moved to a new town after their daughter had been bullied....
Talk about a mess.

Posting a photo of Roman from a Halloween past and probably my favorite costume THAT I MADE; no costume of Max from ‘Where The Wild Things Are‘ existed so I made the best costume in the land that year.

Watched this little gem ‘Alice, Sweet Alice‘ which has Brooke Shields in her debut role as Karen, sister to the troubled Alice. Shields doesn‘t last long in this 1976 slasher-thriller; she is strangled at her First Communion.
Then lots of other people get bumped off by the same girl running around in a yellow raincoat and a creepy mask.
And there‘s the neighbor sitting around in his gross undies feeding kittens.

Another one in this fun series about this zombie girl and her pals, one who is a ghost and the other who is a were-terrier, and it‘s set in Eugene, OR.
Gwen is now developing feelings for a monster-hunter and there‘s a gang of female vampires hanging out in the same neck of the woods. Lots of good stuff.

Finally read it, and BEFORE seeing the movie. I‘ve had this a while, had it signed by Josh Malerman and worked hard to not even watch trailers to not have images of the adaptation so I could distance myself from being affected by them (it was hard).

Malerman does a great job of building tension, and creates fear when the reasons aren‘t even clear. Fear of the unknown is pretty terrifying.

This book is sensational. Leigh Bardugo may well be known as a YA fantasy author but wow, she knows how to write an adult horror-thriller and I‘m so glad that this is where her writing has led her.
It‘s a murder-mystery set at Yale: secret societies practicing magic, disparities in class and wealth, rape, addiction, cults, ghosts, and murder are all within these pages. And lots of Latin. It blew me away.

kamoorephoto @Clwojick Trying to figure out points still... 1 Black cover 1 Matte Cover (yes except for the title and snake, it is) 1 Over 200 pages 1 Character dies (several) 1 Part of a series 1 That scares you (some of this was totally horrifying) 1 Number in the title (Ninth) 1 About Halloween (can it count when there was a portion?) 2 Subject theme (this was definitely murder mystery-thriller) 1 post 1 book read = 12? Clwojick SO with the point breakdown, you get 5 points if a portion of it was related to or set on Halloween night. 1 point for the participation post. As for the Scavenger Hunt Prompts, you only get 1 point per prompt the first time you check it off... so if you've read 6 books where somone dies, you only get the point the first time. So... if this is the first time you've used these prompts then you're total would be 14 😆 1mo
kamoorephoto @clwojick Okay, so I still think it‘s 12 then, considering the prompts I‘ve used before, and with Halloween being 5 👍🏼 1mo

This was a confusing read; not good when it comes to middle-grade reading, as the basic storyline should be easy to follow. It started as tho a chapter was missing. Since the famed author is adept at stringing a yarn or 2 together, I kept thinking it was going to become crystal clear. I enjoyed the illustrations and concepts involved but if the Scare School is going work in GN form, the storylines have got to be clearer than this.
#TeamSlaughter+1

tjwill Totally agree. My 8yo daughter and I are about 2/3 through it now, and while it has some interesting concepts, it started too abruptly for me to care much about what happens to the characters. 1mo

Even after reading some of #Triptych and watching Nightmare on Elm Street, this wasn‘t the best thing to read before bed, regardless of it being a graphic novel.
BECAUSE IT HAPPENED.
IT WAS REAL.
Drawn and written by author-artist and former classmate ‘Derf,‘ he constructs a clear picture of how a mentally disturbed Dahmer grew up in an environment that shaped him into a serial killer. So many signs. So little done.

1 M&M‘s, Lindt, Fruity Tootsie Rolls, Cadbury‘s (I often raid my son‘s trick-or-treat stash because he gets SO MUCH CANDY, I have to help him out) 🍫
2 More on the scary side/traditional horror (not so cutsie), BUT...cats

4 Frankenstein, Maleficent, werewolves, vampires

1 I prefer fast zombies or infected like ones in movies like 28 Days Later (one of my faves); not felt compelled to read ANY zombie books

3 LOVE both - do you mean SLASHERS?! I used to work on horror movies so I like it all

danibolahood I'm another one guilty of a hold up :( buying a 100 year old house because the door knobs look cool is quite possibly not the most well thought out plan I've ever had lol. Sooooo much work and I feel like I'm hemorrhaging money over here. I love it though just trying to get to the end of the tunnel 4mo
kamoorephoto @danibolahood That sounds like quite the house... and those must be some AMAZING doorknobs 🙀 Congrats on the house! 4mo

This Vicious Cure | Emily Suvada
post image

Just finished my third #24in48 book so thought I‘d post my favorite YA & MG for the Hour 30 challenge before I get up and walk the dog.
I also just got one of my coveted UK arcs (thanks, bro) to join my Mortal Coil collection; I hope I can get the upcoming ‘This Vicious Cure‘ arc from the UK, as it‘s set to come out in the Fall. I love this series and Emily so much! Great sci-fi.
When I was little tho, I loved Enid Blyton books 😉

Scochrane26 If you like sci-fi, have you read A Conspiracy of Stars by Olivia a cole? It‘s ya. 4mo
kamoorephoto @Scochrane26 I‘ve not read that yet!! I‘ll have to check that out! 👍🏼💙 4mo

Just a few things I want to read for this #24in48...

Just getting started!
So happy that my ARC for Katya De Becerra‘s next book ‘Oasis‘ has arrived, AND so has my copy of ‘The Chain‘. Also have this digital galley for ‘The Lost Power‘ I‘ll take on. We shall see...

So now you have THIS post AND a #bookgiveaway (7 copies up for grabs)!
It‘s THE thriller of 2019 + it‘s a #botm pick! 💗

@Meaw_catlady

The new moon in Cancer, the week of my birthday (July 6th), is making this time especially hard. Moving into shelter, dog being sick, questioning life, that all is tricky!

1 It may seem to be a wonderful thing but it also has made periods of my life incredibly challenging, just FEELING so much. I‘ve often wished I didn‘t.
2 This has become so hard. It‘s been a long time since I nurtured myself and found sacred space.

I DID IT.
I finally moved out. I finally moved US (my son and I) OUT.
It took ‘just‘ a few years, help from a women‘s org, a big leap of faith, and we‘ve been housed in a 2 bedroom (transitional) apartment home to help us get on our feet.
I don‘t have all my books, but I do have my pets, my son and a roof over my head, and help as I try and wade away from the shit-show that I‘ve been living in for some time.
Thanks for being here, Litsy.

Ashley_Nicoletto Oh my gosh! That‘s amazing! Congrats on your new future. 5mo

Teeth in the Mist | Dawn Kurtagich
post image

I‘m so excited that all THREE of these amazing books are NOW RELEASED!!!
I meant to post about them bright and early on June 11th (now yesterday) but it turns out it was a big day for me too, one where I moved into a new home, which took a big (sudden) leap of faith on my part.
Anyway, these three novels, while so different, are all very powerful, thought-provoking and unforgettable.
I can‘t wait for others to read them!

gradcat Wishing you good fortune & much happiness in your new abode! 🥰 5mo
kamoorephoto *I will say that Teeth In The Mist is NOT light reading (I will have my review up soon). It‘s complex, imagery-and-high-concept-filled dark fantasy and horror based on the Faustian legend, and while it has teen characters, classifying it as YA, this could squarely draw an adult audience based on its complexity. It spans three timelines, has strong female characters, and will challenge many readers of horror and fantasy who are drawn to it. (edited) 5mo
kamoorephoto @gradcat Thank you, it‘s actually officially transitional housing/shelter for myself and my son; it was a long hard journey to today... 5mo
gradcat Oh, then I really hope you two are okay...and that you will thrive in the future. Stay strong! ♥️ 5mo

#MayMonthlyWrapUp
I read some great books this month, not as much as I would have liked but still...
- I went to #Yallwest
- Claire LeGrand/Marissa Meyer signing
- Continued my challenges (a bit behind on them and some book clubs but I‘m determined to catch up) and started the library‘s summer book bingo
- On track with my Goodreads reading challenge
- Fave Books: The Grace Year (review below), Lock Every Door, The Grief Keeper

Because #Recursion is a #BOTM choice this month and I‘d love to give my recommendation, here‘s my blog post and review (from April). I‘m not surprised it a pick, but if you‘re on the fence, and love a good sci-fi novel, really enjoyed #DarkMatter by Blake Crouch (who I got to meet!), READ IT 👉🏼

kamoorephoto @imabusybee Once you start this one, it‘s a FAST read...it was like that with Dark Matter for me too. Sometimes I actually unintentionally don‘t pick up books I know that will happen with. I don‘t want them to end so quickly. 6mo

The Grief Keeper | Alexandra Villasante
post image

This book is blowing me away.
17-year old Marisol and her younger sister Gabi have crossed the U.S. border illegally, fleeing a life in El Salvador where they were frightened for their lives and their brother had just been murdered. Marisol‘s asylum request is denied but she soon is asked to become a ‘grief keeper,‘ and this is where a story about the complexities of immigration, grief, and sexual orientation really comes alive.

#AprilWrapUp
Finally posting this: April was a pretty good month, with 10 books, including 6 arcs/unreleased reads, but several on my backlist. Two were fresh from my bookswap with the lovely @ReadingRover 💓
It was a month of SO many good books, I‘ve hardly read a mediocre or bad book in a while honestly.
Also, 2 signings this month: one with Ian Doescher, and another with Rachel Lynn Solomon, Shaun David Hutchinson, and Kathleen Glasgow!

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Nicely done! 📖💖 6mo
ReadingRover Yay! What did you think of The Test? Did you like it? 6mo

kamoorephoto @ReadingRover Oh I loved both of the books I‘ve read so far (Brat Pack America and The Test...SO GOOD)!!! Been enjoying my books but am behind on reviews...😻 (edited) 6mo

THANK YOU SO MUCH @ReadingRover Megan, for my amazing ‘Cat-mageddon‘ #scififantasyswap package!!! I love it so much!
The books are all spot on (I‘m glad we are both anal about our Goodreads lists; it made it easy). You picked so many on my wishlist (I had not bought them)!!
And thank you for indulging my cat obsession so perfectly. I wish I could hug you 💗💗💗😽

So I LOVED all of these books (I honestly had to give them all 4-5 stars) but with my last five reads, I‘ve been treading in some dark, depressing, and pretty sobering territory.
I probably should read something a little lighter next, don‘t you think? Maybe?!

*BUT, I highly recommend all of these books! 🤔

kamoorephoto Uplifting topics included: 1. Self-harming/drug abuse, 2. grief, teens in foster homes, 3. murder/serial-killer, 4. Munchausen-by-proxy disorder, 5. insanely unrealistic societal (and ultimately pathological) expectations for young girls. 7mo

#MarchWrapUp
I had a pretty good month of reading and enjoyed lots of cool books; knocked lots off my lists, challenges, and arc TBRs.
Also went to Emerald City Comic Con and took part in the @penguinrandomhouse Book Club where we discussed ‘Salvation Day.‘

I think I covered quite a range of books (but no non-fiction): sci-fi, fantasy, horror, humor, literary fiction, YA, middle-grade.
And squeezed in 2 signings. Good distraction from homelife.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Great job! 📖💖 8mo

Scary Stories for Young Foxes | Christian McKay Heidicker

Pickpick

I have FRESH NEW #bookreviews up on my blog for #TheNewMe by Halle Butler (dark comedy, literary fiction), #SkyWithoutStars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell (YA sci-fi reimagining of #LesMisérables), and #ScaryStoriesForYoungFoxes by Christian Heidicker (middle grade Poe-inspired woodland tale).

I enjoyed all three! But SO different.
You could say I have broad reading tastes... ??‍???
