I love all her books, but I picked up her YA as a book challenge prompt, and I wish I had picked it up sooner. This is my grief book. She managed to build every emotion and present every stage of grief so poignantly in a Novella length story that I will be recommending to everyone looking for a book on grief.

peanutnine This was my favorite book in middle school 11mo
angieinwonderland I can see why! Did you read The Green Witch? 11mo

A beautifully written book about loss and moving on. Alice Hoffman does magical realism so well and this book was no exception. A deceptively simple book with such deep meaning.

"As far as I was concerned the future was a book I could write to suit myself, chapter after chapter of good fortune. All was right with the world, and my place in it was assured, or so I thought then. I had no idea that all stories unfold like white flowers, petal by petal, each in its own time and season, dependent on circumstance and fate. The future is something no one can foretell."

I once believed that life was a gift. I thought whatever I wanted I would someday possess. Is that greed or only youth? Is it hope or stupidity? As far as I was concerned the future was a book I could write myself, chapter after chapter of good fortune. All was right with the world, and my place in it was assured, or so I thought then. #AliceHoffman #masterwordsmith

Green is a teenage survivor in this #postapocalyptic #fairytale about the power of love in healing. Poetic & heartrending, beautifully written. I absolutely loved it.

When Green's parents and younger sister die in a horrible fire, she is left alone, blaming herself for surviving. The world has gone crazy and all is covered with ash. As Green struggles to survive, she arms herself with many physical and emotional barriers that keep her protected from being hurt again. Just when she thinks she has lost herself forever, love and healing gradually find her.

A lovely little book that celebrates the power of love.

Deborah42 I want the whole world to read this beautiful little book. 7y

This #shortread was amazing! A #postapocalyptic #fairytale written in sparing prose that is down right mesmerizing. Definitely my pick for #recommendsday!

Chachic #recommendsday seems like a fun hashtag, I should join in! 8y

I reread this the other day, it was one of my favorites when I was younger and I'm hesitant to reread childhood favorites because I don't want to realize they weren't good the first time around. But this one is better than I remember. Green is working through her grief after her whole town and the nearby city is destroyed and even with how short the book is you really go through all her emotions and thoughts with her.
