Loved this book! Black Cloud is a surrealists take on a revolution and what it takes to not only rebel but to face the even more difficult task of rebuilding after wards. It is surreal fantasy based on some very topical issues and definitely leaves you with some food for thought.

For fans of full metal alchemist this is a must read. It's a smart, serious, book that takes a good hard look at the causes, effects and consequences of war and the desperate ends people will be driven to for survival. Heart breakingly tragic story told with beautifully detailed art.

Prayers for the Stolen | Jennifer Clement

A powerful story about love and survival. In a small border town in Mexico Ladydi grows up in the shadow of the drug war. Taught from a young age to make herself ugly, to lie and say she was a boy, and to run and hide. All so that she could avoid becoming one of the stolen, young girls pressed into slavery by the drug cartels. This book manages to be both incredibly dark and yet full of hope.

Wow! A fantastic, unflinching look at the American Revolution from the view point of the average every day soldiers that fought in it. Love the fact that it addressed the hypocrisy of slaves in a "free" nation and the plight of women in a war fought for the freedom of land owning, white men.

For fans of the musical, this is a fascinating, historically accurate look at the first fully documented murder trial in American history. With Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton as sitting lawyers for the defense and the entire city of New York calling for the death of their defendent the book makes you feel like you are really there as the trial begins.

A Heyer written from the male's perspective? There Foundling follows the adventures of the young Duke of Sale who is tired of being cosseted and escorted and protected at every turn and wants to be Mr Dash of No Where In Particular. While making his escape from his well meaning entourage he finds himself on an adventure with a runaway a Foundling and a rouge. What follows is a romp unlike any other Heyer.

A fascinating look at mankinds first brush with mass starvation and our first oil crisis and how German chemists worked together to create a cutting edge scientific solution that saved the world but had devastating consequences. I did not realize Jewish German scientists created so much of the technology that Hitler used, right down to the gas used in his chambers at Ausvitch. Fascinating reading with a tragic ending.

I feel like this is Heyer's answer to Jane Austen's Emma. Sophy is the only daughter of a diplomat leaving for South America and so he leaves his daughter in the care of his sister and her family in London. Sophy finds that her cousins are in a "sad tangle" and so sets about putting things to rights in a fashion that is shockingly outrageous! Not to mention she just might find a few surprises herself along the way...

A disgraced Lord who took the blamed for his brother's cheating at cards turns to life as a highwayman. Then he stumbles across a damsel in distress as she is about to be kidnapped. What unfolds is Georgette Heyer's first novel. Definitely working on getting her legs in this one and managing to sparkle anyway!

MayJasper I love Georgette Heyer. I read many of her books several decades ago voraciously. I recently came back to a couple and enjoyed them even more. Feel good books, excellent mood raisers. 8y

The sequel to These Old Shades, Devil's Cub is a delight from start to finish. You don't need to have read the first to understand the second though it will add to your enjoyment! The Duke of Avon and his wife now have a son who is just as much of a trouble maker as the father. He ends up needing to leave the country for awhile after a duel gone bad. In a fit of pique he takes a girl with him to teach her a lesson, only he takes the wrong sister!
