Stars in Our Eyes: The Famous, the Infamous, and Why We Care Way Too Much about Them
Stars in Our Eyes: The Famous, the Infamous, and Why We Care Way Too Much about Them | Julie Klam
From bestselling author Julie Klam comes a lively and engaging exploration of celebrity: why celebrities fascinate us, what it means to be famous today, and why celebrities are so important. When I was young I was convinced celebrities could save me, Julie Klam admits inThe Stars in Our Eyes, her funny and personal exploration of fame and celebrity. As she did for subjects as wide-ranging as dogs, mothers, and friendship, Klam brings her infectious curiosity and crackling wit to the topic of celebrity. As she admits, I ve always been enamored with celebrities, be they movie stars, baseball players, TV actors, and now Internet sensations. They are the us we want to be. Celebrities today have a global presence and can be, Klam writes, some girl on Instagram who does nude yoga and has 3.5 million followers, a thirteen-year-old viner, and a Korean rapper who posts his videos that are viewed millions of times. InThe Stars in Our Eyes, Klam examines this phenomenon. She delves deep into what makes someone a celebrity, explains why we care about celebrities more than ever, and uncovers the bargains they make with the public and the burdens they bear to sustain this status. The result is an engaging, astute, and eye-opening look into celebrity that reveals the truths about fame as it elucidates why it s such an important part of life today."

Pickpick

Stories like this one are the reason I think a lot of people are invested in the lives of celebrities - and why we grieve them when they‘re gone. Klam celebrates that engagement with the lives of people we‘ve never met, but feel like we know, while also pointing out the occasional dark side of celebrity & our fascination with it. Overall though, I could NOT stop smiling. (And look, the time Kyle MacLachlan liked my Tweet was THE BEST DAY, okay?)

I like to think I‘d be perfectly calm and collected in being faced with Leo DiCaprio. Let‘s be honest, though, I‘d probably just pass out. (Although look, he‘s getting even more handsome as he gets older, and that‘s just not fair.) #thestarsinoureyes #julieklam #leonardodicaprio

Well, while I‘m multitasking, might as well go for a hat trick, right? 😂 [And let‘s be honest, this is a thought process that plagues my daily life. “Oh my God, Chrissy Teigen was killing it on Twitter today...oh my God why do I care?” (The answer is because Chrissy Teigen is my queen. Whatever.)] The point is, I‘m totally one of those people, & while I should probably be ashamed, I like to think I like fun celebs. #thestarsinoureyes #julieklam

sammisho Chrissy Teigan is a queen. 7y
actualdisneyprincess @sammisho frickin‘ right??? like, I hurt myself laughing at some of the clap-backs she gives. I love that she gives zero fricks about anything and is just unapologetically real. 😂 (also her cookbook is FANTASTIC) 7y
sammisho @actualdisneyprincess I keep meaning to get her cookbook! She is one of the few celebrities I follow on instagram. Love that she keeps it real! 7y

Loving this audiobook which is totally satisfying the People reading, celebrity watcher side of my personality.

BookFreakOut This makes me think of Mike Rowe, who recently said he doesn't share his personal political opinions b/c he can't think of any celebrity who's political opinion he values so he can't imagine anyone cares about his! Sounds like an interesting read. 7y

I wanted and expected a lot more from this book -- something with social criticism, stats, psychology and-in depth introspection. It was fluffy and padded out
with quotes from people JK knows, many of whom were clearly extremely privileged -- they hadn't met these celebs randomly ont the street or at stage door but at mommy and daddy's parties or some such. It was clearly written/edited super fast -- there are mentions of very recent events.

BookishClaire All of which is fine, because maybe there's still room in the world for me to write *my* version of this book. And I also had no problem breezing through it, so it was clearly enjoyable. 7y

Um, do we? I don't think we do. If I met Queen Elizabeth I'd be blown away. It'd be a huge privilege, and I'd never ask for a selfie. The way an American person thinks a British person feels is not always how an actual British person feels!

Eh. I can't say I was super impressed with what she had to say. It mostly seemed self-explanatory to me. But it was well-written and pretty fun to read. Though I will say that I skipped the "intermissions" entirely - I didn't think it was very interesting to read stories about pseudo-celebrities meeting bigger celebs.

BookishClaire Agreed on the intermissions. 7y

On to the next book! I really love when authors tell us point blank why they are writing something

This was a quick enough read, and her interviews were fun (hey, Timothy Hutton), but it was a bit bland after recently having read Too Fat Too Slutty Too Loud. I had been hoping Klam would dig into WHY we feel compelled to feed the celebrity machine but it stayed pretty surface level, in my opinion. I would have liked an interview with an uber-celebrity (like an Emma Watson) to get into sudden-fame-in-the-social-media-world.

balletbookworm I enjoyed the "celebrity encounters" stories Klam included at the end of each chapter (one about Ron Jeremy actually had me laughing out loud). 7y
balletbookworm Also, I feel like Anna Kendrick would have been a good interview for this book since she's dealing with the crazy social media level fame but also seems to have retained the ability to keep her head on straight. But then she just did a memoir that was quite enjoyable so an interview seems less necessary ;) 7y

I hate to tell her this, but it's just a baseball diamond by a farmhouse and a cornfield. We used to have a lot of those in rural Iowa before every park and school got professional level ball fields. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(The better celebrity sighting is Ashton and Mila downtown in IC at SpoCo. Or in the bookstore - we have a code to alert our kids lead ?)

Julie Klams' hysterical insiteful look at celebrity, why are we so so involved in their lives why did we mourn whenJenn&Brad broke up.Two people except for their celebrity most of us do not really know.Mixed in with Julie's real life stories this is a wonderful read.

This book has these fantastic intermissions that are "real people" encounters with celebrities. ?

Also, these are our new kitties: Lord Dresden Drizzleton and Sir Watney Swizzlestick of Little Kittyton. ? Can you guess which is which?
