Small Ceremonies
Small Ceremonies: A Novel | Carol Shields
5 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
What is the matter with me, I wonder. Why am I always the one who watches? Judith Gill lives with her husband, son, and daughter in a nice house in the suburbs of Ontario. She has carved out a niche as a respected biographer. Her universe is shaped and bounded by the lives around her, from her family to the subjects of her books. She finds herself in the background of her life, but she hungers to tell stories of her own. In this witty, nuanced novel about art, life, love, and fiction, Carol Shields reveals Judith to readers and to herselfa woman with bold emotions, powerful instincts, and a knack for observing the small ceremonies that give our lives meaning.

Thanks to @shawnmooney who posted a quote from Carol Shields' book Startle and Illuminate, I went in search of books by Shields and selected this one from 1976. Her writing is superb! #newtomewriters #carolshields

I loved Shields' later stuff, especially the stories, but this, her debut novel, was awful. I enjoyed the lively, whimsical prose - to the point of tearing up nostalgically in the first few pages - but this tale of a reticent biographer and her circle grappling with lofty matters of literary inspiration, plagiarism, and Canadian identity came across more like a nerdy episode of The Brady Bunch than a serious work of fiction, comical or otherwise.

LeahBergen I haven't read this (but loved The Stone Diaries and Larry's Party). I better stick to her later stuff, too! 😳 7y
shawnmooney @LeahBergen I've always thought her short stories were far far better than her novels. I didn't love the two novels you mentioned but I did like them. 💜 7y
andrew61 I have always enjoyed her books especially the later ones, unless particularly. I have also read earlier novels Republic of love (think i enjoyed) +happenstance and bizarrely as i don't usually like gimics i found satisfying with the device of flipping it upside down and backwards to read the second half - whilst i will skip this one certainly a talent missed 7y
shawnmooney @andrew61 @LeahBergen Thanks for your interesting comments. I do think big fans of her writing should give this one a try, though. You may have a very different reaction to it than I did! :) I plan to read all of her stuff over time. 7y
andrew61 Thanks shawn i will add it to read although keep intending to revisit stone diaries as it is a while since i read it. 7y

I've only read her later novels and short stories. This sentence, in the opening pages of her first novel (1976), is so quintessentially Carol-Shieldsian that it made me all verklempt. ❤❤
