The city of Parole is burning. Like Venice slips into the sea, Parole crumbles into fire. Trapped inside is an entirely unlikely population of people with bizarre, beautiful, and terrifying abilities. When Regan, an anxiety-ridden hit man with the peeling skin of a lizard, meets Evelyn, a singer, revolutionary, and unofficial superhero, it's up to them to get to the heart of the mystery of Parole and its quarantined inhabitants. Along with a diverse group of misfits, they will evade a deadly totalitarian police force, uncover the truth about their entwining pasts, and fight to survive a cataclysmic disaster.

Mehso-so

I‘m here for everything this queer dystopian superhero story tries to do—and yet, it left me cold. I did like elements of the setup, but I failed to click with any of the characters. Some of their motivations felt opaque, while in other cases their actions, especially their positivity and trauma processing, felt prescriptive instead of like organic parts of the story.

So I can‘t rec this one. Sadness.

I want to watch TV, but the weather‘s way too good for inside activities. Book it is.

I‘m definitely interested in CHAMELEON MOON, but I‘m far enough in now that I‘ve gotta accept I won‘t love it. That‘s okay. I‘m happy to find stuff I like, even if my feelings never progress past that.

...except the last book I accepted I‘d like-not-love turned out to be my favourite of the year. So maybe I‘m holding onto some possibly-false hope here, too.

#bookreport time!

I finished GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN (really good), MATING THE HUNTRESS (fun), and ATHYRA (great). I‘m about 40% into CHAMELEON MOON.

Alas, I couldn‘t click with RACING THE DARK or AN EARTHLY CROWN by Kate Elliott.

On audio, I finished TRISTAN STRONG PUNCHES A HOLE IN THE SKY by Kwame Mbalia (fun) and HERE FOR IT by R. Eric Thomas (THE BEST), and I‘m 75% into THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

I‘m having one of those frustrating can‘t-wake-up days, so I‘m doing the book & coffee thing instead of the audiowalk thing on this warm Friday afternoon.

I hope CHAMELEON MOON sticks. My last two non-audio books didn‘t grab me.

xicanti @dariazeoli I think this was the last tablet-style ereader they produced before they decided not to compete with the Kindle Fire. 5y

Listen, it's -always- a good day to support trans authors, but with J K Rowling waving her transphobe flag higher and harder than usual here's a reminder/notice: there's tons of amazing SSF by trans authors and this tweet is a great starting point.

khooliha JK has, of course, written some real problematic shit her whole career! 5y

This book wants to be your friend quite badly. It wants you to know: everything will be okay. The world might be burning but we will save one another.

Shit has gotten -real- with the taxi boy and he's still me? I didn't pick this book to get attacked like this!

khooliha (JK, he is being treated with love and understanding, but some of this is too on the nose. Please let me live, fiction.) 7y

Just read a conversation that is exactly the convo I have regularly with tons of people and it was like getting thumped in the chest. I'm the... over eager, fight-to-stay-posi taxi boy?

I've been waiting to read this one, putting it at the bottom of my mini tbr, a sort of treat. I love Stake Sauce so much that I'm confident it won't disappoint!

Aaaaah more Chameleon Moon adventures in THE LIFELINE SIGNAL. Part two comes with more cool characters and adventures, and as always, Ariana writes a happy and hopeful dystopia with a super inclusive cast. #queerlit #diversebooks

Looking for a dystopia that has a diverse cast with multiple POVs and is weirdly hopeful for a dystopian novel? You should definitely read this book.

Looking for a character-driven super inclusive dystopian novel? Look no further. I honestly can't remember the last time I read a book that had so many actual conversations on mental health, disability, gender, sexuality, etc. I can't recommend this enough. #queerlit #AceBookClub #diversebooks #ownvoices
