The Amazing Story of the Man Who Cycled from India to Europe for Love
The Amazing Story of the Man Who Cycled from India to Europe for Love | Per J. Andersson
10 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
Pradyumna Kumar, known as PK, was born into a poor, untouchable family in a small village in eastern India. All his life he has kept a palm leaf bearing an astrologers prophecy: "You will marry a girl who is not from the village, not from the district, not even from our country; she will be musical, own a jungle and be born under the sign of the ox. But not until PK attends art school in New Delhi do his stars begin to align. One evening, while drawing portraits in a park, he meets a young Swedish woman, Lotta von Schendin -- and this brief meeting will change the courses of their lives forever. This is the remarkable true story of how a young Indian man armed with nothing more than a handful of paintbrushes and a secondhand Raleigh bicycle made his way across Asia and Europe in search of the woman he loves.

I'm undecided.
I liked the fact that there was a true philosophical tone to this... however, he did seem to have a lot of extremely good fortune throughout. Maybe I'm too cynical!
Still think it's an awesome cover 😊😉

This is one off my Mum‘s bookshelf so I haven‘t read it....

It‘s funny how it doesn‘t seem to have a ‘proper‘ title, just a very long subtitle...

TheEllieMo It‘s got me intrigued.... 5y
Cinfhen It‘s a fabulous title and cover 💖🙌🏻 5y

It was definately a unique story...it felt like the author was a bit torn in how to write it. The focus was on PK's life mostly and it seems as though the love story is told more as an afterthought. It would have been interesting to share more about Lotta's point of view.

I had high hopes for this true story about a Dalit man who made his way to Sweden to find the woman he loved. But this is incredibly heavy on PK‘s back story and not so much on the real life love story or journey. Maybe if I‘d had different expectations, I‘d have enjoyed it more. Time to get back to making a dent in my LibraryThing Early Reviewer Books. Plus my husband is asleep in the bedroom where all of my partially read books are. (He just arrived home on the red eye an hour or so ago so I hate to rummage in there and possibly wake him up.)

erzascarletbookgasm I read the blurb of this book at the bookstore recently. Seems it‘s based on a true story. Sounds interesting. :) 6y
BookNAround @erzascarletbookgasm it‘s definitely non-fiction, which I didn‘t know when I requested it but I‘m looking forward to it no matter what it is. 6y

His mother was not scared of the dead. She believed the best way to keep malicious spirits at bay was to show confidence , which she considered herself to possess. Only self doubt would put you within reach of death's grip.
'As long as your are brave, no one can hurt you, not even dead.' She would say.

Thanks to #Netgalley for giving me #ARC. So much to share, I've mixed feelings whilst I admire PK's courage and determination, and yet his views on Hinduism and Indian are painful (or limited to his own experience). Reader always reads a story from so many perspective, including their own experiences. Full review coming up!
