Illusion of Justice
Illusion of Justice: Inside Making a Murderer and America's Broken System | Jerome F. Buting
4 posts | 4 read | 23 to read
Interweaving his account of the Steven Avery trial at the heart of Making a Murderer with other high profile cases from his criminal defense career, attorney Jerome F. Buting explains the flaws in Americas criminal justice system and lays out a provocative, persuasive blue-print for reform. Over his career, Jerome F. Buting has spent hundreds of hours in courtrooms representing defendants in criminal trials. When he agreed to join Dean Strang as co-counsel for the defense in Steven A. Avery vs. State of Wisconsin, he knew a tough fight lay ahead. But, as he reveals in Illusion of Justice, no-one could have predicted just how tough and twisted that fight would beor that it would become the center of the documentary Making a Murderer, which made Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey household names and thrust Buting into the spotlight. Butings powerful, riveting boots-on-the-ground narrative of Averys and Dasseys cases becomes a springboard to examine the shaky integrity of law enforcement and justice in the United States, which Buting has witnessed firsthand for more than 35 years. From his early career as a public defender to his success overturning wrongful convictions working with the Innocence Project, his story provides a compelling expert view into the high-stakes arena of criminal defense law; the difficulties of forensic science; and a horrifying reality of biased interrogations, coerced or false confessions, faulty eyewitness testimony, official misconduct, and more. Combining narrative reportage with critical commentary and personal reflection, Buting explores his professional and personal motivations, career-defining casesincluding his shocking fifteen-year-long fight to clear the name of another man wrongly accused and convicted of murderand what must happen if our broken system is to be saved. Taking a place beside Just Mercy and The New Jim Crow, Illusion of Justice is a tour-de-force from a relentless and eloquent advocate for justice who is determined to fulfill his professional responsibility and, in the face of overwhelming odds, make Americas judicial system work as it is designed to do.

Buting was one of the defense attorneys for Steven Avery, the subject of The Making of a Murder. Here he lays out the narrative behind the documentary, clearly and with explanations of the legal strategy and reasoning. Well-written and heartbreaking for everyone. I haven‘t seen TMOAM, so it was all news to me. Highly recommend.

Where are my #murderino littens at? I'm so excited that tonight I get to work an event for Jerome F. Buting (Making a Murderer/ Steven Avery) and David Rudolf (of the Michael Peterson/Staircase trial).

I watched Making a Murderer and even read Prosecutor Ken Kratz‘s book. I was convinced Steven Avery killed Teresa Halbach for one reason—I have a very difficult time accepting conspiracy theories.

My feelings started to evolve. And like everyone else, I was impressed by defense attorneys Dean Strang and Jerry Buting. What I‘ve come to realize, even before reading this, is that the evidence just doesn‘t point to guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Mdargusch Hmmm. Very interesting. 🤔 6y
2BR02B Even if you believe Avery is guilty, I feel like it's quite apparent Brendan Dassey's confession was coerced. He deserves a retrial. 6y
Reviewsbylola Completely, 100% agree. @2BR02B 6y

Ava_Black I've been to this junkyard with my husband for his car parts business, and know people in that town. Avery was a feared man that people avoided, but the facts really make you wonder... 6y
Reviewsbylola Yeah I definitely think it‘s very possible he killed her. I also think it‘s something we‘ll never know one way or another. But I got that feeling that he wasn‘t a revered community member, lol. @Ava_Black How cool that you‘ve been to their junkyard!!! (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi jenna said the two of you were just discussing this case. 😂 She is so thrilled that I‘m now on “her side.” 6y
Ava_Black I've been to lots of junkyards, and most are run by grumpy, but harmless, old men, but this one had a very bad vibe. Anger or something. Didn't like it. I think Avery did it, too, and Brandon needed some seriously heavy-hitters to represent him because he didn't understand the situation's gravity. Not how justice is supposed to work...but can't help wondering, if Avery is guilty, if this IS justice. (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola It definitely brings about a lot of questions. I think that‘s ultimately so frustrating, is that we‘ll never know exactly what happened. I hate that. @Ava_Black 6y
Ava_Black Agree. Sad for everyone all around. 6y
emilyhaldi Lol, Jenna and I got caught up on a lot of murder mysteries!! (The Staircase being my fav discussion 😉) and I really don‘t know how I feel about this one, but I do agree that poor Brendan Dassey‘s trial was mishandled. 6y
