I read this Jane Eyre inspired YA book with my YA for Adults book club, and I loved the addition of African magic. I'm not sure it worked as well as a YA as it would have an adult novel, and of course Rochester is still Rochester, so not relationship goals. It definitely has horror element going for it (blood rains from the walls!), and it's got ghosts and curses and exorcism of a sort.

Another amazing, brutal thriller from Slaughter! As much as I love the Will Trent universe, it was nice to have a standalone too. All the triggers for this book though, as it deals with sexual abuse, pedophiles, drug addiction, chronic pain, and a lot of violence.

Did you know Doms now come in Cinnamon flavored? Bc that's what I learned about from reading this book! Our bookstore romance club read picked this as January's read, and it was a great start to the year! I was a little worried bc I'm not huge into BDSM romances, but this one was more about the kink culture and not into beating your lover (I'm still not okay after reading The Siren). A super positive kink and Trans novel, and a great love story.

This is a case of a thriller where everyone is terrible and yet you're still drawn in because of the mystery. I'm not even sad about the murder, because the patriarch was an awful, awful human, although maybe the mom could have redeemed herself? Still, lots of suspects, lots of theories, and even I had a motive to kill the old man. 😉 💀

I did not love this book, and I don't think I even liked it. I did love the authors previous book-I'm Not Dying With You Tonight, but this one was just a bummer. What I thought the book was going to be about- Best friend cheerleaders taking a knee during the anthem and how both deal with the fallout- doesn't even happen until over half way through, and the friendship is pretty much already over by then. Neither of the main characters are ⬇

MidnightBookGirl particularly likeable, nor really supporting of the other, which made me sad. I wish it had focused on them becoming friends (like the authors did in their first book) and recognizing their strengths and weaknesses, but if the book has to constantly remind you they are besties while showing you the opposite, then I don't know what to say. I was hoping for a social justice book and got a friendship break down instead. #Readin22 #TBR #Pantone2022 7d

This one has been on my mental TBR list, but since I don't own it or have the arc, I'm counting it as an Impulse read for this year. It's a bit slow, but I always love the historical aspect of Brackston's books, so it didn't bother me. Follows a 300+ year old witch as she flees from the warlock who wants to claim her, and not in a sexy way. #Readin22 #Audiobook #Impulse #Pantone2022

We read this for the bookstore's Faraway book club, which focuses on books in translation. This book is supposed to be a coming of age novel, but the main character doesn't really show much growth throughout the story, and is very sexist, misogynist, and transphobic, even though he is dealing with his sexual attraction to men- but that's not explored a lot so... The trip through Cameroon was the best part. #Readin22 #BookClub #ebook

This was a lovely start to my reading year! Although I have the hard cover, I ended up listening to this on audio because I was running around on the first. You definitely need to read The Witches of New York first, but as this book is set during the lead up to New Years, it's really the perfect end of year/start of year novella. I think I'll be picking up more of McKay's books in 2022. #audio #tbr

A perfect book to ring in the New Year, as it's set in the days leading up to New Years. I just wish I hadn't waited so long since reading The Witches of New York, which I only barely remembered. It didn't take long for me to fall back in love with the characters and enjoy the magic and danger of McKay's world.

The last book of 2021 was 8-Bit Christmas, which I managed to finish at the very end, and I started the New Year with a quick but lovely read of Half Spent Was the Night, which is a novella that comes after The Witches of New York and is set days before the New Year and after, which was perfect.

It was hard to choose between this and The Inheritance of Orquidea Divinia, but I gave the nod to Midnight Hour because I genuinely liked all the short stories in the collection- which is not usually the case in an anthology. There's thrillers and noir and lots in between, and I loved discovering some awesome new to me authors. Definitely recommending if you like crime fiction!

My last read of 2021 (and the last book for #WinterGames).
I loved the movie so much, and realized I had this arc on my tbr, so I spent New Years Eve finishing it. Honestly? The movie is a lot better, but there's fun to be had here too. Jake's dad's anger while driving was funny and relatable, and I loved the 80s setting.

And while she's falling for the inn keeper, her 3 exes show up to try to win her back.

I really loved this story (even though the narration was not great). Carmen is 20 something and feeling a bit lost in life, especially when compared to her perfect older sister with her perfect home and perfect family. She reluctantly moves in with her sister and tries to help an old man save his bookshop, and her heart begins to melt and grow as she spends time with her nieces and nephew and finds herself interested in 2 very different men. ⬇

I loved this, probably more than I should as non-pyschopath. Scarlett is a bit like Dexter, she likes to kill bad men.
