The root meaning of the English word midwife is "with woman." Midwives were known for their knowledge and skill in an area of life that was a mystery to most people; sometimes they were thought to possess magical or mystical abilities. Written history suggests that many were revered, but others were feared, and sometimes tortured and killed.
Whatever their title, [the shaman or medicine man/woman] received what others believed was a vision or a deep spiritual insight into their patients. They never lost sight of the spiritual side of health and disease, realizing the power of the mind.
