Ghost Riders: Travels with American Nomads | Richard Grant
2 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Richard Grant has never spent more than twenty-two consecutive nights under the same roof. Motivated partly by his own wanderlust and partly by his realisation that America is a land populated by wanderers, he set out to test his theory. AMERICAN NOMADS is the extraordinary result. 'Freedom is impossible and meaningless within the confines of sedentary society, the only true freedom is the freedom to cross the land, beholden to no one'. Grant follows the trails of the first European to wander across the American West (a failed conquistador); joins a group of rodeo-competing cowboys (and gets thrown by a mechanical bull); tells the story of the vanishing nomadic Indians and links up with 300,000 'gerito gypsies' - old people who live and travel in their RVs (Recreational Vehicles). 'When all is said and done, there are two types of men: those who stay at home and those who do not' Kipling. This is the story of those that 'did not' who are populated - and are still travelling - in America.

Pickpick

A English journalist who has lived in America most of his life and examines the role of the nomad in American tradition from Native Americans to mountain men to hobos to the modern one percenters who cannot fit into society. And he knows his subject having lived the life for years, travelling months at a time on the road in pursuit of both stories but also a great understanding of why some people must always wander. Dated but fascinating.

House under contract. Husband drives U-haul away. My son and I will be nomads for a few weeks staying with friends until school lets out. (Ok, so it‘s not as bad as the picture. It just feels that way)

charl08 Good luck :-) 7y
wanderinglynn I‘m in the same boat & feel your pain. 🙂 I‘m getting ready to move most of my stuff into storage for a week and a half & then road tripping to my mom‘s house until I can move into my new place. 7y
Soubhiville I love this picture! I‘ve always felt a kinship with Nomad types. I hope you aren‘t in limbo couch surfing for too long though, and that you‘re able to settle quickly when you get to your new place. 7y

youngreadrshelf @wanderinglynn I know. Every time I look for something I have to remember where it might be. Good luck to you. 7y
youngreadrshelf @Soubhiville thanks. I don‘t mind living in new places; it‘s just moving the stuff. (And my husband is getting tired of moving books. 😆) 7y
charl08 Wishing you chocolate and wine too! 7y
