The Plot to Hack America
The Plot to Hack America: How Putin's Cyberspies and WikiLeaks Tried to Steal the 2016 Election | Malcolm Nance
15 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
In April 2016, computer technicians at the Democratic National Committee discovered that someone had accessed the organizations computer servers and conducted a theft that is best described as Watergate 2.0. In the weeks that followed, the nations top computer security experts discovered that the cyber thieves had helped themselves to everything: sensitive documents, emails, donor information, even voice mails. Soon after, the remainder of the Democratic Party machine, the congressional campaign, the Clinton campaign, and their friends and allies in the media were also hacked. Credit cards numbers, phone numbers, and contacts were stolen. In short order, the FBI found that more than twenty-five state election offices had their voter registration systems probed or attacked by the same hackers. Western intelligence agencies tracked the hack to Russian spy agencies and dubbed them the CYBER BEARS. The media was soon flooded with the stolen information channeled through Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. It was a massive attack on America but the Russian hacks appeared to have a singular goalelect Donald J. Trump as president of the United States. New York Times bestselling author and career intelligence officer Malcolm Nances fast paced real-life spy thriller takes you from Vladimir Putins rise through the KGB from junior officer to spymaster-in-chief and spells out the story of how he performed the ultimate political manipulationconvincing Donald Trump to abandon seventy years of American foreign policy including the destruction of NATO, cheering the end of the European Union, allowing Russian domination of Eastern Europe, and destroying the existing global order with America at its lead. The Plot to Hack America is the thrilling true story of how Putins spy agency, run by the Russian billionaire class, used the promise of power and influence to cultivate Trump as well as his closest aides, the Kremlin Crew, to become unwitting assets of the Russian government. The goal? To put an end to 240 years of free and fair American democratic elections.

Interesting story of how Russian operatives hacked into America‘s Democratic Party to influence the 2016 presidential elections. The book was published before the election, and so crazy to hear how much rings true. Pretty frightening in all. It will be interesting to see where we‘re heading politically in the next few years.

I didn‘t think the book was going to be that useful because it was written and published just before the 2016 election so expected to be very out of date. Instead it was excellent background to understanding what‘s currently going on esp in the heavy detail about how the Russian operations work, a good bit of history of Russia and KGB etc. Also his profiles of people like Manafort and Flynn were prescient considering what we since have learned.

Still listening as I clean house. I discovered that I can speed up the audiobook and I‘m listening to it at 1.5x speed. I wouldn‘t do that with fiction or a book where I‘m savoring the writing, but as this is straightforward factual, why not? Added benefit—I think it has me moving faster in my cleaning!!

It‘s terrifying that Nance was able to put all this together & present it to the public before the 2016 election... and yet this Chump still got elected 🤦🏻‍♀️
The book is good, but very heavy on Intel in-speak. If you like that, you‘ll love hanging out with this book. If it‘s too much, you can skim those parts & still get the point: Russia influenced our election, & our president is compromised.

WorldsOkayestStepMom Ohh I bet my husband would love this! He is an Army Intel veteran. 5y
Sweettartlaura @WorldsOkayestStepMom Oh, yes - he would. The second half is an actual Intel report that I didn‘t even thumb through 🤣. I imagine it‘s redacted, etc., but he can probably get everything out of it. Maybe you just found a stocking stuffer? 😉📚 5y

#6: This book was recommended by A friend. It was an interesting look at our 2016 presidential election. See what comes from it all! #strangebuttrue #17booksin2017

Oh no! I read, rated, and quoted passages from this book on here, but still found it on my TBR list. That's because the title is a misprint. It's "THE Plot to Hack America." Now it looks like I listed it twice. A small thing, but it will drive me nuts.

Reviewsbylola There are so many duplicates if titles on here where one version leaves out "the" at the beginning. Drives some nuts! 7y

Whether he knew it or not, Trump was the perfect candidate for a political asset. Former KGB officer Yuri Bezmenov said the KGB targeted "Ego-centric people who lack moral principles--who are either too greedy or who suffer from exaggerated self-importance. These are the people the KGB wants and finds easiest to recruit."

Worst of all is that the rise of an American idealogue who firmly admires and works to emulate the murder-based power politics of America's strategic nuclear opponent with the intent to dismantle the defensive systems and treaties that kept this nation safe for over seventy years, reveals that the intelligence community's ability to detect threats can be defeated through demagoguery.

The beauty pageant would be held in the Crocus City Hall, a 7,500-seat concert hall just four years old. Trump was dazzled, and desired the attention of the only oligarch who mattered, Vladimir Putin. He tweeted with gleeful apprehension, "Do you think Putin will be going to the Miss Universe Pageant in November in Moscow--if so, will he become my new best friend?"

Trump himself was aware of Putin's designs, but unlike most Americans, he applauded. In his 2011 book Time to Get Tough he wrote, "Putin has big plans for Russia. He wants to edge out its neighbors so that he can dominate oil supplies to all of Europe." Elaborating, Trump wrote, "I respect Putin and Russians but cannot believe our leader (Obama) allows them to get away with so much...Hats off to the Russians."

I've deliberately reduced my news consumption this year but enjoy watching Nance on shows like Late Night with Bill Maher and AM Joy with Joy Reid. He is very knowledgeable yet engaging with a sense of humor, making the subject more palatable. The book is 'heavy' so I'm sipping it but so far very interesting. And I may be developing a wee crush on him.
