"Shall I tell you what a lady is? A lady is a woman who wears a silk gown, and has a sense of her own importance." Wilkie Collins's investigation of illegitimacy and 'the woman question' in"No Name"(1862) compels with a wholly different order of suspense from that of"The Woman in White"or"The Moonstone." For its family secret - the Vanstone daughters' illegitimacy, their consequent disinheritance and fall from social grace - is revealed early on, and as Magdalen Vanstone struggles to reclaim her identity, the plot uncovers many a moral, social and legal skeleton in the cupboards of Victorian society. Mercurial and unscrupulous, Magdalen is Wilkie Collins's most exhilarating heroine, one of the rare subversives in Victorian fiction and a woman dazzlingly versatile in her powers of self-transformation. Through her, with great comic vigour, "No Name"exposes how social identity is constructed, and how it can be dismantled, buried, borrowed or invented. I‘ve always adored Collins‘ atmospheric storytelling - he doesn‘t fail in this tale of two sisters, disinherited & made illegitimate by an outdated Will. The main story unfolds as each deals w/ the blow to their status & lives. News alert, one of them takes a flying leap into the underworld of disguises, false names, & an intense & gripping scam worthy of a play out on the big screen. I could not stop reading when this part of the plot played out.

LeahBergen Stunning photo! 😍 I really need to read some Wilkie Collins; it‘s one of my “bookish shames” that I haven‘t (and, of course, I have them waiting on my shelves 😆). 3y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen I share the “bookish shame.” 😂 3y
catebutler @LeahBergen Thanks Leah! Yes you do! 😂 And you‘re in good company, I‘m sure all of us readers have quite a few “bookish shames”. I think you‘d really really like WC. He‘s brilliant. 3y

batsy Nice review! I'm keen to read this! @erzascarletbookgasm Definitely add The Moonstone to your list 🙂 3y
catebutler @erzascarletbookgasm Thank you!! The Moonstone is excellent. I usually recommend reading those two first before dipping into his other works. But, I was seriously surprised and impressed with how much I loved this one!! 3y
catebutler @batsy Thank you! Love to hear what you think once you pick it up! 3y

Overshadowed by Collins‘ other titles The Moonstone and The Woman in White but unfairly so IMO! I loved this roller coaster ride of a classic Victorian sensation novel😍 #ReadingResolutions #underratedbook

This isn‘t in the Litsy database (yet!!), but I thought I‘d share it. It comes out on 8th May, and if you like your books a bit scary with lots of tension and build up, then you might just like this! The Moor by Sam Haysom was read on #ThePigeonhole (I‘m reading a lot of books on this app - it‘s fantastic!!).

Obviously this isn‘t Wilkie Collins, but it isn‘t listed on Litsy yet! Another great choice on #ThePigeonhole. I thought it was going to be Urban Fantasy, but it isn‘t. It‘s a thriller, fast moving, very exciting! I would‘ve read it all in one sitting if I‘d had the book, but it certainly added to the tension by getting a ‘stave‘ every day. If you haven‘t tried The Pigeonhole, I‘d say it‘s worth a go!!

This 📚 hasn't been added yet, but it was wonderful, so I wanted to tell you! If you like YA, and want a different type of paranormal, you'll enjoy it! Teens possessed by the spirits of their ancestors, who are trying to find out the mystery behind their murders, anyone??

An easy read for a Victorian novel, this had it all; illegitimacy, disinheritance, a con artist, daring disguises, assumed identity, sleep-walking, marriage for revenge and a happy ending.
