Phenomena
Phenomena: The Secret History of the U.S. Government's Investigations into Extrasensory Perception and Psychokinesis | Annie Jacobsen
5 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
The definitive history of the military's decades-long investigation into mental powers and phenomena, from the author of Pulitzer Prize finalist The Pentagon's Brain and international bestseller Area 51. This is a book about a team of scientists and psychics with top secret clearances. For more than forty years, the U.S. government has researched extrasensory perception, using it in attempts to locate hostages, fugitives, secret bases, and downed fighter jets, to divine other nations' secrets, and even to predict future threats to national security. The intelligence agencies and military services involved include CIA, DIA, NSA, DEA, the Navy, Air Force, and Army-and even the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Now, for the first time, New York Times bestselling author Annie Jacobsen tells the story of these radical, controversial programs, using never before seen declassified documents as well as exclusive interviews with, and unprecedented access to, more than fifty of the individuals involved. Speaking on the record, many for the first time, are former CIA and Defense Department scientists, analysts, and program managers, as well as the government psychics themselves. Who did the U.S. government hire for these top secret programs, and how do they explain their military and intelligence work? How do scientists approach such enigmatic subject matter? What interested the government in these supposed powers and does the research continue? Phenomena is a riveting investigation into how far governments will go in the name of national security.

While not as riveting as "Nuclear War", Annie Jacobsen brings us her exhaustive and thorough research into top secret programs that were set up and funded by the CIA, the US military and other government intelligence agencies. Through declassified documents and interviews with these individuals, she paints a compelling and objective portrait with jaw-dropping accounts that makes one question (including this skeptic) the limit of our abilities.

Really enjoyed this book - Annie Jacobson really goes in depth with her research. Completely bananapants premise - who knew the American government was researching these kinds of things! Craziness...but my kind of craziness!

Geeklet Oohh. That sounds interesting. 7y
wtimblin @Geeklet it was. She has done a few other books about various government departments doing shady, sneaky stuff. I also recommend The Pentagon's Brain (history of DARPA). Not everyone's cup of tea, but I found it fascinating. 7y
Geeklet @wtimblin I‘ll have to check it out. I enjoy learning about the weird crap the government does. 7y

AlaMich We‘re all probably better off NOT knowing what all the US government is up to. And I say that as an American. 6y
wtimblin @AlaMich I shudder to think what we don't know, considering what we do! 6y
AlaMich @wtimblin I prefer to take the “stick my head in the sand and pretend it‘s all not happening” approach to living here at the moment. 😟 6y
wtimblin @AlaMich I feel for you. And it's a good approach, will help keep you sane! 6y

I was a bit dubious about this one and then on the 1st page it describes in WWII the deputy fuhrer chose the date to fly to England based on astrology. He was arrested and this led Hitler to arrest astrologists and fortune tellers. Now I'm so on on this book! #readathon
