Interesting read, reinforced my understanding of the inherent rscism in UK in the late decsdes of 20th century.
I liked the families, their individual people and relationships. The ancestral accounts were almost too detailed but still interesting.

I read Small Island some years ago and didn't realise she's written so many others 😳.
So far this has been keeping me interested and wanting to read more, even though it has historically racist vocab and language which is hard to read.
Diversifying our Brit Lit curriculum with this story about the daughter of Jamaican immigrants who, after experiencing traumatic racism at home in London, visits her parents‘ home country and learns about her family history 🍋 I like Andrea Levy‘s writing, but this plot meandered more than I prefer. I felt more invested in the Jamaica part than the London part, and I wish we‘d gotten there sooner. Curious what students will think

This is a beautiful story about family, identity, and culture. Levy is able to tell a hard-hitting, heavy story while still including humorous and touching moments. Highly recommend.
