Fiction. "Amina Cain is a beautiful writer. Like the girl in the rear view mirror in your backseat, quiet, looking out the window half smiling, then not, then glancing at you, curious to her. That is how her thoughts and words make me feel, like clouds hanging with jets, and knowing love is pure."--Thurston Moore"To be among Amina Cain's creatures is to stand in the presence of what is mysterious, expansive, and alive. Whether these distinctly female characters are falling in and out of uncanny intimacies, speaking from the hidden realms of the unconscious, seeking self-knowledge, or becoming visible in all their candor and strangeness, they move through a universe shaped by the gravitational pull of elusive yet resilient forces-the yin-dark energies of instinct and feeling that animate creative life. It's here that the intuitive reach of fiction meets the reader's own quest for understanding, through the subtle beauty of living the truth of one's experiences in the most attentive and unadorned way possible."--Pamela Lu

Mehso-so

The writing style in these stories makes them difficult to connect to, they describe emotions but feel numb. I liked the last story, "Delicately Feeling," but had to try a few times to get that far. One of the titles from the Dorothy Project. Heck of a cover though! #shortstorymonth

Tamra I'd be sucked in by the cover! 7y
ReadingEnvy @Tamra it FEELS nice too. I'm a sucker. :D 7y
Tamra Are you discussing cover art in your reading class? I am ashamed to admit that covers influence my purchases. I immediately slide books back into shelves with "chick-litty" or "romancey" covers. I can't even define those terms, so shame on me. ? For example, people love the Ferrante series, but the covers scream "nooo" at me. 7y

ReadingEnvy @Tamra yes! During genre week we also have talked about different methods for choosing or evaluating books. Monday we judged books by their covers and then tested to see if our tastes held up. 7y
ReadingEnvy @Tamra Also many people hate the Ferrante covers... I read an explanation once that made me realize they are more sinister than they seem at first. No women have faces and it is deliberate. After reading the second book I totally see why. 7y
Tamra @ReadingEnvy did you enjoy the series? If so, I need to try it and also work on my prejudice. 7y
ReadingEnvy @Tamra I haven't read them all yet, just 1 and 2. I had a big gap between but I found 2 to be even better, lots of real world in there. 7y
batsy I love the size and feel of the Dorothy Project books. It's too bad this wasn't as intriguing on the inside as the outside. 7y
ReadingEnvy @batsy I have liked others more so far! 7y
batsy @ReadingEnvy Have you read Fra Keeler, by any chance? My next Dorothy purchase was a choice between that and Creature 🙂 7y
ReadingEnvy @batsy since I bought the set for that deal, which made each book $10, I have all of them before the Carrington. I haven't read the Fra Keeler yet but it looks good! 7y
