Pickpick

It‘s June 1 - short story month is now over. I wasn‘t able to host the short story swap this year 😢 but I want to hear what stories you‘re reading. Share your favorite short stories you read this month & tag me. #shortstorymonth

I‘ve read the tagged collection, The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo, and some of Paris Stories by Mavis Gallant.

Weaponxgirl I'm reading this book in translation and loving it right now. A dark fairytale vibe. 6y

Day 24: memorial read. He may not have been the best Bond but he was the one who objected to the way society glorified a man with a gun. RIP Roger Moore. #myfirstbond #genxbond #shortstorymonth

Mehso-so

The writing style in these stories makes them difficult to connect to, they describe emotions but feel numb. I liked the last story, "Delicately Feeling," but had to try a few times to get that far. One of the titles from the Dorothy Project. Heck of a cover though! #shortstorymonth

Tamra I'd be sucked in by the cover! 8y
ReadingEnvy @Tamra it FEELS nice too. I'm a sucker. :D 8y
Tamra Are you discussing cover art in your reading class? I am ashamed to admit that covers influence my purchases. I immediately slide books back into shelves with "chick-litty" or "romancey" covers. I can't even define those terms, so shame on me. ? For example, people love the Ferrante series, but the covers scream "nooo" at me. 8y

ReadingEnvy @Tamra yes! During genre week we also have talked about different methods for choosing or evaluating books. Monday we judged books by their covers and then tested to see if our tastes held up. 8y
ReadingEnvy @Tamra Also many people hate the Ferrante covers... I read an explanation once that made me realize they are more sinister than they seem at first. No women have faces and it is deliberate. After reading the second book I totally see why. 8y
Tamra @ReadingEnvy did you enjoy the series? If so, I need to try it and also work on my prejudice. 8y
ReadingEnvy @Tamra I haven't read them all yet, just 1 and 2. I had a big gap between but I found 2 to be even better, lots of real world in there. 8y
batsy I love the size and feel of the Dorothy Project books. It's too bad this wasn't as intriguing on the inside as the outside. 8y
ReadingEnvy @batsy I have liked others more so far! 8y
batsy @ReadingEnvy Have you read Fra Keeler, by any chance? My next Dorothy purchase was a choice between that and Creature 🙂 8y
ReadingEnvy @batsy since I bought the set for that deal, which made each book $10, I have all of them before the Carrington. I haven't read the Fra Keeler yet but it looks good! 8y

Day 2: title story from Hemingway's Snows of Kilimanjaro. I bogarted this copy ($1.25) from my father in the late 80s when I supplemented my college studies with attempting to become a Hemingway completist, which is one of the only things my father and I have in common. #shortstorymonth #papa

Pickpick

It's fitting that I finished this on day one of #shortstorymonth - I loved these stories. Especially the self titled story and one called "if I vanished". They were weird and sexy and insane but also grounded. One story is just about a guy watching a Kevin Costner movie while being sad and I swear to you it is profound!

manifestsanity Kevin Costner does provoke deep thoughts. 8y
Suet624 Hmmm....profound and Kevin Costner in the same sentence. You don't see that very often. I'll have to check this book out. 8y
