8 posts | 16 read | 6 to read
Spring has arrived in The Park. The snow is melting, the birds are singing, the wolves are frolicking and somewhere, in a lonely cabin along the road to Niniltna, a mans sanity is breaking. Soon, nine people will be dead, seemingly the victims of a random act of violenceuntil a routine ballistics test reveals that one of the murders was anything but random. Once again the Anchorage DAs department must turn to their former investigator, Kate Shugak, to uncover a calculating killer, hiding in plain sight. The second novel in Stabenow's Edgar Award-wining series of Alaskan mysteries, A Fatal Thaw vividly captures life in America's last frontier, filled with unique hardships, quirks and rewards.

I read this as a result of enjoying the first in series from my LMPBC group, and I enjoyed it even more than the first one. It‘s very dark and shocking with a crime within a crime and 2 different perpetrators…always a neat concept.
Continue to like and be intrigued by Kate‘s character as I learn more about her heritage and the isolated Alaskan community around her. Definitely will continue with the series. 4.5/5⭐️

Jerdencon I‘m hoping to get to this one too. 1mo
bookandbedandtea I liked the first one enough to be interested in reading on so I'm glad to hear you think the next one is even better. 1mo
robinb @Jerdencon @bookandbedandtea I‘m really enjoying Kate‘s character more and more. And this one is really dark and has an interesting plotline. 1mo

The 2nd Kate Shugak mystery, and every bit as good as the 1st. Once again, Kate is dragged into the middle of a murder investigation that has taken a sharp left turn. Craziness, a serial shooter, family drama, mountain climbing, and more. Kate Shugak is fierce. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A mass murderer goes on the rampage in Niniltna but one of the victims is found to have been killed with a different gun from the others.

The descriptions of the Alaskan physical and social background are still what hold my interest rather than the actual mystery, though the characters are also starting to draw me in - primarily the main character, Kate, and her husky/wolf mix, Mutt, but also the supporting cast of Jack, Bobby, and Bernie

This book, and a few others in this series, I found at a bargain price. And remembering seeing them here I took them home. ☺️
This one was a quick read. I liked the story and the characters. Especially the character of Mutt, the dog 🐺

TrishB I like this series, am slowly working my way through them 😀 7y

These are good quick mystery/thriller reads. The best thing about them is the backdrop of the countryside in Alaska and the lifestyles of those that live in the really remote areas.

ScrappyMags Reminds me of William Kent Krueger books (a fave of mine) so I'll check em out thanks! 👍🏼 7y
TrishB @ScrappyMags Krueger a new one for me 👍 7y

Second book on the train - should manage to get half way through before home!
Reading this series as it was recommended by the wonderful author Sharon K Penman 😀 Thrillers set in Alaska.

MidnightBookGirl I love train traveling! That how I go to NYC, and it's as stress free as travel gets for me. Plus I love the time to read! 7y
TrishB @MidnightBookGirl exactly 😀💓 7y
