A great biography to learn about the greatest composer of the 20th century

What's funny is when I think of Duke Ellington now I think of Big Mouth where there is the Ghost of Duke Ellington, so it was nice to learn some real facts about him other than the fake cartoon I knew him as on the show. I'm sad that I hadn't already known about him but that's why I think these children's books are so valuable.

My favorite part about this book was the colors used and the amazing illustrations that were presented!

Duke Ellington by Andrea David Pinkney was phenomenal! It was about a man's name who was Duke. As a child, he said piano made an umpy-dump sound that was headed nowhere worth following. But, years later, he heard the piano played a whole new way. People called the music “ragtime“, and soon the sound had Duke's fingers riding the piano keys. This is the story of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, the king of the keys. Amazing!

This would be a great book to read to students when discussing black history month or doing an assignment about biographies.

This was a great biography of a wonderful musician.

Duke Ellington: The Piano Prince and His Orchestra written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Brian Pinkney is a biography book and a Caldecott award winner that is all about the legend himself. This book is also great for Black History month! I would definitely use this book for a PR. #UCFLAE3414F19

This Caldecott and CSK Award winning B is full of beautiful illustrations that depict the life of one of America‘s greatest composers, Duke Ellington. With rhythmic and swinging prose, Pinkney takes the reader right into these jazzy times in history to make his story truly come alive. Ellington wrote many pieces celebrating the life of African Americans which are still significant today. RA could double this story as a history lesson as well!

My favorite aspect of this book is how the author began the story with a set of rhyming sentences and then ended the story with a set of rhyming sentences. This sort of “begins” and “ends” the book in a fun and more meaningful way.

Duke Ellington is about the life of the famous jazz musician. This book is full of colorful pictures that make the book fun and interesting.

I love this part because it goes along perfectly with the illustrations and shows how great of an artist Duke really was!

These illustrations are incredible!! The colors and movement of the work is like seeing the music that those people were hearing!! Breathtaking!!
