As if witnessing a trailer featuring the likes of the Time Delorean and The Iron Giant, I knew only Spielberg could accomplish such a feat on screen. Buts it's Cline's imagination and excellent story telling that truly immerses you into the rich subculture of Geekdom and Gamers alike. Definitely for older students in Middle or High School, but truly great none the less. #ucflae3414sp17 #areyouready? #theoasisislife

13 Reasons Why | Jay Asher

Finding the right words to provide a review to this is really hard. It's a powerful take on how damaging ones peers and the societal pressures can take a toll on many versus the few. Read with caution for it does get graphic at times, but a very insightful look at the hardships a girl faces, and the reasons why she took her life #ucflae3414sp17 #13reasons #why #ireadbeforeiwatched #dothesame

DrSpalding So proud of you @EthanH for continuing to READ and post! I've heard a great deal about this book and series. For teens, it requires guidance from an adult. Serious content that needs to be unpacked! 8y
BrielleR Hey! I can see myself reading this book and not watching the Netflix series. I feel like for this nature of a story, the book is best. Thanks for sharing! 7y

There was another quote referencing Eminem, but given I'm a Netflix fiend, this will suffice. Great picture book on the dependency of technology of this age. However, technology know how is a must in a growing technological classroom so here's a lesson plan on how to use iPads that ends with this book: http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/preview.cgi?LPid=35742 #ucflae3414sp17 #eminemisthegoat #ipostedthiswithmyipad #tehe #dependent

CharlotteG I think it is so funny to see technology making an appearance even in books! So wild to me. 8y
DrSpalding A variant of Goodnight Moon that so many children can relate to! 8y
LaurenMcl I added this one to my Amazon shopping cart because who doesn't love a parody!? 8y

It's good luck for a ship to carry aboard a feline luck charm. Well that's what Jim believes, as he's set to work as a cabin boy for the "Unsinkable Titanic" and befriends the ships cat. Cats can also symbolize bad luck or oncoming danger. What will Jim believe in the end in this historical fiction piece. Here's some more superstitions about cats to go along with a discussion: https://user.xmission.com/~emailbox/folklore.htm #ucflae3414sp17 #cats

DrSpalding As a side note, there are interesting stories about the animals that were on board! Some survived! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2128731/Women-PETS-There-menagerie-ani... 8y

John Philip Duck | Patricia Polacco

I wanted to take a picture of a duck, but they must've flown more south. Anyway, here's a great historical fiction piece on how the famous hotels established this feathery tradition of theirs. To accompany here's a link to some ideas on how students can look up what was accurate and what was changed: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/john_phillip_duck.php #ucflae3414sp17 #noharmnofowl #wewillquackyou #waddlebabywaddle

DrSpalding It no longer occurs but our local Peabody on I-Drive used to have the suck procession. It was a sight to see! 🦆 8y

"Though I've grow old, the bell still rings for me as it does for all those who truly believe." Favorite quote Gio this great book, for it truly captures the heart and essence of the holiday spirit. Found some great discussion starter tees for more on the significance of the bell. http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/thepolarexpress/tg/polar.shtml #IBelieve #PolarExpress #believe #ucflae3414sp17 #fantasyatitsfinest

DrSpalding Wonderful hash tags and publisher's resource! 8y
SarahF I love your hashtags 😂 I was never a fan of the movie (it was too long and I was too young) but after reading the book in my adult life, I really came to enjoy and appreciate it. I love the resources! I've seen a few classes that do polar express parties before winter break and these would be great activities to include beyond watching the movie! 8y
BrielleR I love this book! I also love the holidays. Reading this post gave me the feeling of Christmas for just a moment. 8y
CharlotteG I've never read this book, but I do love the movie. This is such a great book for the holidays!! 8y

Jumanji | Chris Van Allsburg

I wasn't aware that the CMC had the Spanish edition, but I'm glad to see they have such accommodations. One of my favorite books growing up as it it for a lot of children around the world. Here's a glog on the author Chris Van Allsburg created by a wonderful UCF student. #checkoutmessup #butitsok #ucflae3414sp17 #jumanji #glogs http://edu.glogster.com/glog/chris-van-allsburg-eph/2toejl67me7/

DrSpalding Impressive Ethan. The Spanish version and your glog! I'm iffy on the new movie set to come out later this year. 8y
AlanaA I like the glog you found because you can pair it with the Spanish book for a multi-lingual lesson! 8y
krystag I used this book for another class and created a lesson plan based on it! Kids love this book especially since they are able to connect it with the movie! A lot of great vocabulary for kids to learn in it as well!! 8y
AmandaN Very cool that you got the Spanish version. I recently got the Spanish version of The Cat in The Hat and I am so excited to have it in my future classroom library. Awesome! 8y

I don't know which was harder, recreating this cover or the enjoyment I had for Charlotte Doyle and her triumphs aboard Seahawk? Luckily I was able to do both, and as a young adult I was able to notice many things I missed. Many symbols were featured in this book so here's a link opening discussion on such symbols. http://www.brighthubeducation.com/homework-help-literature/78408-symbolism-in-ch... #ucflae3414sp17 #HF #partofthecrew

DrSpalding I agree that this is a great book for exploring themes and symbolism! Love the cover recreation pic! ❤️📚 8y
Mlegg Love your picture for this book! You included a great resource for teachers to use along with this book. What a great way to teach symbolism!!! 8y
SarahF I love reading your post and seeing how creative you are with the pictures you choose to take! Awesome read 8y

The Crossover | Kwame Alexander
post image
Pickpick

Wasn't expecting much out of it, but The Crossover is an excellent blend of a modern young culture and a coming of age story. Delivered in a visual poetic format, Kwame Alexander invites you into the struggles of Josh "Filthy McNasty" on and off the court. Great read and great for introducing or furthering a poetry lesson. http://poetryforchildren.blogspot.com/2014/08/guide-crossover-by-kwame-alexander... #UCFLAE3414sp17 #AirPlaneReads

DrSpalding I love to hear you were reading this on the plane! Think positive from the start! I wouldn't steer you in the wrong direction! 8y
KaylaC I would have never known this book had poetry in it! It seemed like a typical basketball-boy type of book, and I was not about reading something like that! But the way you described it makes it seem like I should give it a chance. Great job! 8y

We only ever hear the pigs' side of the tale, but what about A. Wolf's. Everything is not what it seems. Thanks to Jon Scieszka, now we have the full story of what actually happened. In 3rd grade, we had a mock trial based on this book. A great civic engagement lesson so I found a template for teachers to use https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Mock-Trial-The-True-Story-of-the-Thr... #whosafraid #ucflae3414sp17 #bigbad

ericai I love his books! i read stinky cheese man, which has such a fun twisted story on our normal folk tales! i definitely want to read this book next! 8y
DrSpalding Wow! Civic engagement and children's literature! Awesome! Great picture too Ethan! 8y
KaylaC I love the picture! It is very creative and funny. I got to read this book, I keep telling myself that, but then I always forget to! 8y

Be Careful What You Eat! In this creepy tale by Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown, Jasper learns that his favorite snack can turn into his worst Nightmare💀💀 If you didn't eat your vegetables before, this horror noir style tale won't change that. #modernfantasy #ucflae3414sp17 #creepy #🥕🥕🥕 http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/35C1809B-B30D-450E-AE7C-1F399C7CA5AF/175769/...

CharlotteG I love all of your selfies with your books! I read Creepy Carrots as well and think it definitely would be great for a comical read. Older elementary age students would find this book fun and love the plot twist! 8y
EthanH Thank You, I feel books are great modeling tools 8y
DrSpalding Impressive attachment! New York City schools obviously appreciate Brown's work. 8y

So You Want to be President? | David Small, Judith St. George
post image
Pickpick

An excellent guide for anyone seeking executive powers over our country. David Small's 2001 Caldecott winner details how our Presidents all have commonalities with one another and you may find some similarities with yourselves. Great read during a social studies lesson. #ucflae3414sp17 https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/so-you-want-be...

DrSpalding Love it! Super informational guide! Genre? 8y
EthanH I'm feeling narrative and expository non fiction 8y
AlanaA This would not only be great for a unit on presidents, but also if you want to teach you class about the qualities of being a leader. I'll have to check this out! 8y
LaurenMcl Excellent resource provided and a perfect lesson especially following a day like this (President's Day). 8y

Wonder | R. J. Palacio

Just finished this for my Literature Circle. Don't want spoil, but what a delight to join little 5th Grader Auggie Pullman in first year school ever. But will it be successful given his exceptionality, or will he learn that those acting "kinder than necessary" can go a long way? Truly a "Wonder"ful" experience from beginning to end. #UCFLAE3414SP17 https://texasbluebonnetaward2014.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/wonder-readers-thea...

DrSpalding You found a RT. This would be excellent for an LC group to perform after their reading! Powerful story! Looking forward to the movie! 🎥 8y
LaurenMcl Your description makes me want to stop at Barnes and Noble to pick up a copy! Great readers theater as well. 8y
