The Gulf
The Gulf | Anna Spargo-Ryan
8 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
My mother had morphed into versions of all kinds of boyfriends before Jason. She'd been a cowboy boot wearer and a biker chick and a Liberal voter. She'd been a person who went to raves in the bush and a person who watched horror movies and a person who had to sleep with the fan on. They'd come and go, and she'd snap back to herself.
But no one had shattered her the way Jason did.
When her mother falls for some guy that she met at the supermarket, sixteen-year-old Skye immediately senses danger. Jason is charming but secretive, prone to fits of temper. He comes and goes at all hours. He has strange friends. Soon he has convinced her mother quit her job and come to work with him... whatever he does.
When Jason persuades Linda that she and her kids should move into his place in Port Flinders - a struggling town in South Australia's Gulf region - Skye and her brother Ben do their best to settle into a new routine. But as Jason's behaviour becomes more unpredictable, and their mother increasingly absent, Skye finds herself forced to make decisions that will change all of their lives for good.
The Gulf is a tender, joyous, funny coming-of-age story from the inimitable, alchemical imagination of Anna Spargo-Ryan.

Bailedbailed

While I quite enjoyed Spargo-Ryan‘s debut, The Paper House, I couldn‘t get into this one, narrated by a decidedly inarticulate teenage girl. I missed the gorgeous sentences and insights peppering the first novel. Bailed a third of the way in.

This lovely package from @Marchpane in Australia arrived the other day – a book trade in which I think I got the best end of the deal! I read and very much enjoyed Spargo-Ryan's debut novel last year, and I am very curious about this, her second. The Maxine Beneba Clarke novel looks super interesting as well! Thank you so much, Maggie! 😻😘😻😘

Hooked_on_books I've read the Clarke stories. I thought the collection was terrific. 7y
LeahBergen Nice!! 👏🏻 7y

Pickpick

"... uniquely Spargo-Ryan, filled with what one hopes will become her signature touches – vibrant characters, beautifully crafted prose, and imagery so strong you want to reach out and touch it."

My full review of The Gulf is up now on The AU Review - check it out at bit.ly/Gulf-review

CouronneDhiver You must live quite far from me... it's evening here! 7y
Joanne1 That looks so much more impressive than the avo toast I just made. Enjoy! 7y
TheSloanRanger @Joanne1 It's from a local cafe I just about live at, they do such good avo on toast 😍 @CouronneDhiver All the way in sunny (though currently rather chilly) Brisbane! 7y

Awww. This is too cute.

To me, this is not a YA book. But it is a story about, and from the POV of, a 16 year old girl, so it's probably inevitable that it feels a bit YA-ish in places (like the passage above).

Anyway this book got me thinking about "what makes a book YA (or not)". I *think* it boils down to a certain tone that comes across in the writing when a book is intentionally aimed at teens. This book didn't have that tone for me.

Marchpane And then sometimes it's just an arbitrary marketing decision, like when the Book Thief was classed as YA in some markets but not others 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y

Surprise ARC! Completely forgot that The AU Review would be sending me this one!
If it's half as good as The Paper House, I'll be dead set 👌

I really liked her debut last year, The Paper House, and so I'm looking forward to this next one, out (in Australia at least) in June!
