First of the 20-novel sequence and despite being set in what might seem a far-off era Zola's tale of doomed love, idealism, and political maneuvering still strike a chord.

Any readers of Les Rougon-Macquart here? 🙋🏻‍♀️ I started reading the series last year, and I follow Zola‘s recommended reading order. Although each book can be read independently, the reading order gives me better understanding about this messy family. I‘m on my 8th book now, and I cannot stop! Some said that it‘s not wise to read Zola back to back, but I‘m quite enjoying the experience 😅

vivastory I have to admit, your Zola posts are making me want to dive in. I've read Thérèse Raquin & I loved it 4y
sisilia @vivastory Join me, Scott 😆 I have not read Therese Raquin, but I heard lots of good things about it. I will grab it after I‘m done with this series 🤩 4y
batsy I've taken a screenshot of this for when I embark on my Zola journey 😆 4y

AlaMich Are you reading them in French? 4y
sisilia @AlaMich In English. I put the French titles because depending on the translation, there are so many variations of English titles. I‘m reading the Oxford World Classics editions 🥰 4y
merelybookish So cool you're doing this! 4y
arubabookwoman I started the Rougon journey several years ago, and got more than half way through, but for some reason stalled. I read in order of publication (I think), not sure if it makes much of a difference. My last Zola was The Masterpiece, next up is Earth. I hope to finish this year. I❤️Zola! 4y
arubabookwoman You are on for a treat! 4y
sisilia @arubabookwoman Wow Deborah, you have only a handful left 😍 4y
sisilia @tpixie This helps my reading plan 😃 2y
sisilia @Daisey Here you go 2y
Daisey Thanks so much! I‘ll definitely keep a screenshot of this for reference. I don‘t know that I‘ll ever try to get to all of them, but you never know. I‘ve read 13 & 16, with Nana possibly next to tackle. 2y
sisilia @Daisey Ooohh you are in the best spot. That purple group is the one that I‘m looking forward to the most. 2y
tpixie @sisilia wonderful! Thanks for sharing!! This is awesome 😎 (edited) 2y
tpixie @Ruthiella did you say you were reading these? 2y
Ruthiella @tpixie I am! Thank you for the tag. 😊 2y

4⭐️ I have started my Rougon-Macquart journey, and I love this first book of the series. I can understand why my friends asked me to pace myself, and not to be greedy as to read all 20 books in one go. Zola is pretty extreme; his bad is terribly bad, and his good is angelic good - everything is accentuated, and there‘s nothing in between. I do enjoy his social chronicle; human behaviour is indeed determined by heredity and environment

erzascarletbookgasm Great review! 👍 5y
JaclynW Excellent review! 5y
arubabookwoman I'm on Book 15 (I think), Earth (which will actually be a reread). I had already read several Zolas when I decided to read them in order. I'm glad you liked this one because it's one of my least favorites, and if it had been the first I read I don't know how far I would have gotten. 5y
sisilia @arubabookwoman Wow, I‘m looking forward to reading the rest 🥰 5y

So here‘s the start of my Rougon-Macquarts journey. How long will it take me to complete all 20 novels? 😅

StaceGhost It took me FOREVER but it‘s way worth it 5y
sisilia @StaceGhost Glad to hear that 👍🏻 5y
emilyhaldi Those people on the cover mean serious business 5y
sisilia @emilyhaldi 😂 My Mum saw the cover and said “what is this? Napoleon era?” She‘s so spot-on! 5y

This first book of the series about the Rougon-Macquart family is just great. Zola's writing is fluid, it makes us plunge into the plot. His characters are memorable. It's a classic worth reading. From what I read, the first English translation was no good, as it kind of censored the original work. I would then recommend you choose the new translation by Oxford University Press.

I've discovered two of my favorite writers ever in the last 3 years and one of them is Zolá. So I decided to read the first on his 20 volume series, Les Rougon-Macquart to test the waters and see if I could try to read the whole thing. This is a great book. Zolá writes wonderfully about absolutely awful people. He's the very best at that. And his endings, just wow. Give him a try.

Just as I'm reading this book, I get into a plane where they're showing "Cezanne et moi", a movie I didn't even know existed about the friendship and falling out of Paul Cezanne and Émile Zolá. It's not a perfect movie by no means but such a gorgeous one! And it was amazing getting a glimpse into the lives and relationships of these great men in such a trascendental period in art history. I loved it.

TheLondonBookworm Michael Rosen had written a really interesting book on Zola's years in London- 8y
Eugeniavb OMG @TheLondonBookworm thx! I'll look it up for sure. Have been obsessed with Zola ever since I read 8y
