Bessarabian Nights
Bessarabian Nights | Stela Brinzeanu
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
'Bessarabian Nights' explores issues besetting contemporary Moldova. The plot rests on modern topics such as economic migration, the East/West culture-clash, the sexual exploitation of East European women and the role of local religion - which has a penchant for the sensational - in the psychological makeup of these victims.

I wouldn‘t have read this book if it weren‘t for the challenge but it did turn out to be very informative about #Moldova. Stela Brinzeanu describes a country that dealt with so many oppressors in the last centuries that it lacks its own identity. Maybe out of powerlessness alcoholism is huge, as are religion, superstition, tradition and the oppression of women. ⬇️⬇️

BarbaraBB Not the best country to grow up in and many seek refuge abroad, only to be trapped in what‘s even worse: trafficking. So while it‘s not the best written book and the plot is weak, this book did open my eyes to this often overlooked country. 3y
rockpools Thanks for the tag. I will actually read it one day!! 3y
Librarybelle Overall, it sounds like a worthwhile read! 3y

Diving into #Moldova, to me Europe‘s most unknown country. The prologue is intriguing but with Liverpool-Ajax in the background it is hard to concentrate. You‘re probably having a nice evening @TrishB 😬!

CarolynM @TrishB While we were in lockdown I had long text conversations with my son during rugby games. Sport has many uses🙂 3y
Megabooks The everything I know about Moldova I learned from watching one of the cast members of 90 Day Fiancé. He and his wife married in America, but they traveled to Moldova this season for a second ceremony. @Reviewsbylola 3y
Reviewsbylola I instantly saw Moldova and knew why I had been tagged. 🤣🤣🤣 He‘s such an ass. 3y
Cathythoughts @TrishB I wasn‘t aware 🤦🏼‍♀️ I better get with the programme.... (Corks a small place ) I‘ll talk to my son about it @CarolynM 😄. I may take a new interest in Liverpool soccer ... ⚽️ 3y

BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts @TrishB He did fine, your Cork goaly. Better than our Onana 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y
batsy @BarbaraBB Aww, I thought Onana did very well up until that went in! Such is the life of a goalie 😁 3y
BarbaraBB @batsy You‘re right, he is such a good keeper but yesterday was really his fault unfortunately. 💩 happens 😄 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola Yes Barbara, all we know about Moldova so far is a) that you stand in a tub in traditional garb to get baptized, b) the American family from florida will expect American food there 🙄🙄, and c) andrrrrei (she rolls the r in her husband‘s name and no one else does) is a chauvinist ass who won‘t work but also hates taking money from his father in law! (Did I cover it Steph?) oh and the Moldovan police are corrupt! 3y
Megabooks Andrei is a former police officer and had to flee to Ireland because of some bad dealings. And Elizabeth‘s family could not understand that police in other countries could be corrupt! 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks This is hilarious. I must watch that series one day 😂 3y
