Lockdown: A Novel of Suspense
Lockdown: A Novel of Suspense | Laurie R King
14 posts | 13 read | 10 to read
A community comes together when threatened by someone with a thirst for revenge in this stunningly intricate, tautly plotted novel of rich psychological suspense from the New York Times bestselling author of the Mary Russell mysteries. Career Day at Guadalupe Middle School: A day given to innocent hopes and youthful dreams. A day no one in attendance will ever forget. A year ago, Principal Linda McDonald arrived at Guadalupe determined to overturn the school's reputation for truancy, gang violence, and neglect. One of her initiatives is Career Day--bringing together children, teachers, and community presenters in a celebration of the future. But there are some in attendance who reject McDonald's bright vision. A principal with a secret. A husband with a murky past. A cop with too many questions. A kid under pressure to prove himself. A girl struggling to escape a mother's history. A young basketball player with an affection for guns. Even the school janitor has a story he dare not reveal. But no one at the gathering anticipates the shocking turn of events that will transform a day of possibilities into an explosive confrontation. Tense, poignant, and brilliantly paced, Laurie R. King's novel charts compelling characters on a collision course--a chain of interactions that locks together hidden lives, troubling secrets, and the bravest impulses of the human heart. The award-winning novels of Laurie R. King are . . . "Sharp, inventive and rewarding."--The Seattle Times "Audacious."--Los Angeles Times "Rousing . . . riveting . . . suspenseful."--Chicago Sun-Times "Impossible to put down."--Romantic Times "Beguiling . . . tantalizing."--The Boston Globe "Stunning."--The Christian Science Monitor "Delightful."--Booklist

Thanks for the tag, @sudi and @JaclynW ! 😃

1. Hyderabad, India
2. Becoming, Circe
3. There is something about a novel written in few pages, but then there are some where length is required to absorb it completely. 🤷‍♀️

Tanisha_A @Reggie I have still got to read The Song of Achilles. Am i stalling it because i know it'll be good, and i can never read it for the first time again? 😁 4y
Reggie @Tanisha_A will it take the pressure off if I say Circe was better? 😊I loved SOA but I think her writing got much better in Circe. 4y
sudi Both great picks 😊 4y

I requested this book because Laurie R King is my favorite active mystery writer. I have read just about every one of her novels. Then this arrived and I found out it was about a school shooting 😱. And I put off reading it. But it really is more about the suspense. Small town CA, lots of characters of very different backgrounds, who may have people after them. Good suspense building. Not gory. Laurie R King did not disappoint me! #mystery

Bookmail came today! I have read just all of Kong‘s catalog, so this is an exciting one to get, thanks #librarything and #penguinrandomhouse !

A certain feline was VERY interested in the envelope 🤣😺

mcipher Is this a standalone? She had one series I loved and then another I couldn‘t get into. 6y
DreesReads @mcipher it is! She hasn‘t had a stand-alone in quite some time. I think! 6y

This started slowly with lots of characters points of views and different timelines. Some serious plot twists and a couple I did not see coming. I am a Laurie King fan and while this may never be my favorite of hers it was still kept me enthralled at the last 100 pages.

SilversReviews I don‘t know this author. Thanks for your post. 6y

First-person background stories are woven into a minute-by-minute account of a middle school career day gone horribly wrong. I was only partially invested: the book itself moved slowly, and the audiobook narrator just didn't click with me. Plus there were several unresolved issues. Ultimate takeaway for me is meh, & I would hesitate to listen to another book performed by Pilar Witherspoon. Full audio review will be available thru AudioFile mag

We are all stories- little stories, blending to make larger stories, building to glorious life epics with colossal casts. Lockdown is a vibrant mosaic. Each tile, taken alone, is fascinating, but brought together they create a beautifully terrifying picture of the confluence of events that will change everyone, reader included.. Ms King has woven a rich, intricate story with beautiful language and a deep, abiding lesson- we are all connected.

Alfoster Great review! I loved it too!😍 7y

It's Career Day at Guadalupe Middle School. The day is dedicated to helping the students see their future potential, but not everyone attending sees a future for themselves. This story alternates between the perspectives of 12 characters. As all these characters from diverse backgrounds are brought together, they set each other on unexpected paths. By the end, I didn't feel rewarded for getting invested in each character's unique story.

I tried the Mary Russell series but was super creeped out about a very young woman and a very old Sherlock Holmes getting together. But this is a stand alone book and very good so far

Shameless galley brag! I love LRK's Kate Martinelli books, and I'm so psyched to read this.

mjdowens I had no idea she had another series. Will have to try it 7y
minkyb I didn't know she was still writing Kate Martinelli. This is very exciting! 7y
bookishkai @minkyb I think this is a standalone; I'm not sure if there will be more Kate Martinelli books, but I have enjoyed her other standalone books. I just don't care for the Mary Russell books. 7y
