iPad: The Missing Manual | J.D. Biersdorfer

I just upgraded my IPad to iOS 18.4.1, and now Litsy isn‘t working right. I can‘t like posts, and it won‘t let me add an image to this post. Anyone else having similar problems?

dabbe Probably a dumb question on my part, but did you delete the Litsy app, then put it back on there, and then restart your iPad? That might help. I'm scared to offer advice, though, because Litsy is such a dinosaur app. C'mon, Tim @ LibraryThing; update this app! 8mo

A high-voltage sci-fi adventure story in a Disneyland-like amusement park of the future. The computer programming starts to glitch increasingly, pixel-holes, a few hushed-up attacks & accidents happen. Soon the AI goes fully awry and the remaining guests and staff of the park have to fight for their lives against attractions turned unpredictable & murderous to find a way out of the madhouse.

You could feel how much fun the author had with telling the story of the things going, a bit like a kid in a candy shop, but after a while, it was just too goofy and stupid. There were tons of inconsistencies. And sorry, no one, no matter how loyal or brainwashed or partially incorporated by the park you were, would act that way when people are starting to get killed. No. No way. ... 2y

There were so many instances where I just rolled my eyes because it just doesn't work that way, at least not on paper.
Maybe this would work better as a Hollywood blockbuster movie where all is action & nothing needs to make sense anymore.
Where were the editors on this one? This book is so promising – it could have been enhanced to a whole another level by a tough round of editing!

I'm generally not a fan of science fiction so I attempted to start this book with an open mind. I'm glad I was able to do so because I was quickly impressed and hooked by chapter three. I'm used to not liking books like this because they are usually overdescriptive when it comes to the world building and don't make much sense. ..... cont

IheartYA The author was able to execute the story in a way that makes it feel plausible. I thoroughly enjoyed the "show not tell" writing style. I'm often hung up by pacing issues but the story glides along seamlessly, aiding in maintaining heightened interest. World building and character development were sharp. ). 3y

IheartYA I was debating between a 4 or 5 star review for most of the book, but decided on 4 stars for mainly two reasons: the how and why questions were not answered, and the end felt a bit rushed and messy. I wasn't a fan of the term "printing," and I felt a better word could have been used (reproduced or regenerated maybe). 3y

IheartYA I'm not a fan of the cover art. To be honest, this is not a book I would have picked up from a book store or library shelf based on cover, title or blurb, which would have been a shame becauseit'sdefinitelyworth a read. Don't judge a book by its cover. This is an author to watch. Thank you to Bookish First for offering this title in their catalogue. The views portrayed above are strictly my own.

Benjamin Banneker and Us: Eleven Generations of an American Family | Rachel Jamison Webster

This is turning out to be a great book! I requested it from the #EarlyReviewer program on #LibraryThing. I was interested in reading more about Benjamin Banneker as I am familiar with him because I live near where his historical home was. The book is written by his descendant who is a white woman. Its discussion of #race in a historical context as well as in current times is fascinating. This is a beautifully written and well researched book.

This is a book I requested from the #LibraryThing #EarlyReviewer program. It‘s the story of the author‘s return to #Nigeria to learn why & how his uncle Emmanuel, for whom he was named, disappeared during the #NigerianCivilWar in the late 1960s. I remember hearing about #Biafra in the news when I was younger, but never knew much about that country. I‘m learning surprising things now...such as that country only lasted for less than three years!
