Journey's End
Journey's End | Robert Cedric Sherriff
2 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
Set in the First World War, Journey's End concerns a group of British officers on the front line and opens in a dugout in the trenches in France. Raleigh, a new eighteen-year-old officer fresh out of English public school, joins the besieged company of his friend and cricketing hero Stanhope, and finds him dramatically changed ... Laurence Olivier starred as Stanhope in the first performance of Journey's End in 1928; the play was an instant stage success and remains a remarkable anti-war classic.

This was a powerful play that takes place solely in a dugout in the trenches during WWI. It‘s dark, intelligent, and emotional in just the right measure. This is probably the best WWI-era work that I‘ve read outside of Erich Maria Remarque‘s work.

This is beautiful and heartbreaking. A quick snapshot at the lives of officers on the front lines during WWI, which is not something usually portrayed in this type of literature. Most of the time the story will focus on a soldier's life, but this play shows that being a commanding officer can be just as hard, and filled with just as much death and sadness. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️#readharderchallenge #publishedbetween1900and1950 @bookriot
