In the Name of Salome
In the Name of Salome | Julia Alvarez
5 posts | 6 read | 13 to read
In her most ambitious work since In the Time of Butterflies, Julia Alvarez tells the story of a woman whose poetry inspired one Caribbean revolution and of her daughter whose dedication to teaching strengthened another. Camila Henriquez Urena is about to retire from her longtime job teaching Spanish at Vassar College. Only now as she sorts through family papers does she begin to know the woman behind the legend of her mother, the revered Salome Urena, who died when Camila was three. In stark contrast to Salome, who became the Dominican Republic's national poet at the age of seventeen, Camila has spent most of her life trying not to offend anybody. Her mother dedicated her life to educating young women to give them voice in their turbulent new nation; Camila has spent her life quietly and anonymously teaching the Spanish pluperfect to upper-class American girls with no notion of revolution, no knowledge of Salome Urena. Now, in 1960, Camila must choose a final destination for herself. Where will she spend the rest of her days? News of the revolution in Cuba mirrors her own internal upheaval. In the process of deciding her future, Camila uncovers the truth of her mother's tragic personal life and, finally, finds a place for her own passion and commitment. Julia Alvarez has won a large and devoted audience by brilliantly illuminating the history of modern Caribbean America through the personal stories of its people. As a Latina, as a poet and novelist, and as a university professor, Julia Alvarez brings her own experience to this exquisite story.

“She has never been able to hold a grudge for long. Inevitably she ends up seeing the other person‘s point of view. It is a habit she has developed from reading too many books perhaps.”

Man, I love this quote! “Continual little realignments that look to all the world like indecisiveness but .. are the quivering of her moral compass towards it‘s true north.”

A special book from a special friend. 💕 You were right @Reggie I loved it! There‘s so much in here that I‘m still processing and mulling over. The story of Salome, a poet who galvanised the Dominican Republic, and her daughter, Camila, living in her wake. Their stories are interwoven - Camila‘s running backwards from her sixties - Salome‘s running forwards from her childhood. So much about being a creator, being a woman, fighting for freedom ⬇️

Centique ... but also for love and authenticity. How do you find meaning in your life in the shadow of a national icon? This is a powerful tale, quietly told, a personal and political revolution through a uniquely female lens. Thank you so much @Reggie I have so much to think about now! 😍 5y

Reggie 😊Yayy, I‘m so glad you liked it. I haven‘t read it in maybe 14 years but it was strong enough to easily always be mentioned in my top 10 books. Time for a reread. Also, Julia was the first author I ever read that played with structure. The one story line going forward, the other going backward till they meet. I just remember it had a quiet power to it. So glad you liked it!!! 5y

A Dominican man came up to me on the train to tell me how famous and important Salome is to his country and before that I had not realized she was real.
