Brave Chef Brianna | Sam Sykes
12 posts | 13 read | 2 to read
To prove herself as a great chef, a young woman sets up a restaurant as the sole human in a city full of monsters. Brianna Jakobsson has big cooking dreams, and when her ailing restaurateur father poses a challenge to his only daughter and fifteen sons, she seizes the opportunity. Shes going to have the best restaurant around and earn the family empire. Thing is, the only place she can afford to set up shop is in Monster City. Her menu is full of weird delicacies, her kitchen is run by a half-bird harpy, and her dining room is filled with skeleton businessmen. Add on the nefarious Madame Cron, some highly competitive siblings and Briannas plate is literally . . . full. Brave Chef Brianna from writer Sam Sykes (Munchkin) and artist Selina Espiritu explores one womans incredible journey to realize her dreams in the unlikeliest of places. Welcome to Monster City!

I wanted to ❤️ this comic about a low-confidence woman starting a restaurant in a monster city. But it gets really problematic. Humans have a history of discrimination & violence against monsters. The main badguy is portrayed as fighting against the human chef for being an opressor, but it's never properly addressed & she's just seen as a mean badguy. In the end, there seems to be a message to just get over histories of racism & let it go.

This is my current read for day 2 of #riotgrams! I have really gone all in with the comics thanks to recs from @bookriot and since this one also just happens to be by Sam Sykes and is about cooking, well I just had to have it!

quietjenn Aw, I didn't realize the collection was out. I've been eyeing the single issues on Hoopla, but didn't want to use up all my credits on them. 6y
BeckyLeJ @quietjenn I don‘t think it‘s been out that long. 6y

I always love seeing my book stats for the year from goodreads; although, I imagine I'll read a few more books before 2018.

Reread these during a recent headache. I love Brianna and Susan's friendship! If only it hadn't ended after 4 issues!

I just finished off this series yesterday, and loved it! Brianna was a funny, relatable hero and I loved her friendship with Susan. Monster City reminded me a little bit of Nightvale, which was delightful. Also, shoutout for seamlessly folding mental health into the narrative of a story where it isn't the major focus. Its a shame this was only a 4 issue story; I would love to keep reading it!

Finally got a chance to read issue 2 and thought it was really great. I would recommend it to any younger readers interested in comics and graphic novels.
